Good info for beginners. Glad to see him talk about not cutting spike off on phalaneopsis types until it is dead (no green area left) and dry all the way down - many new orchid owners lose the opportunity for rebloom on the old spikes and lots of flowers when they cut the bloom spikes off just because the current blooms are gone. I have a phal that bloomed in November and it has been in bud since - now the end of May. I cut the spike finally but it could NOT all orchid types do this - for example cattleyas don’t rebloom on the flower stalk - once the buds have emerged from the sheath - that’s it. When those are done you can remove any bits of dried sheath, flowers etc from that growth. It will only rebloom on a new growth and from a new sheath. However, the advice on not watering from above always seems contradictive as plants in the wild get rained on at least once per day to multiple times per day and even most of the day in fog for those orchids that grow high in cloud forests. Most folks fail to tell why you the difference and that it depends on your environment. I try to keep water off blooms unless they have a lot of airflow to dry them off no matter how grown and definitely don’t water anything with the full sun or even partial sun on them. Anyway - in the tropical forests most of these plants are growing upside down from how we have them in pots. In fact when you mount orchids, it is really best and more natural looking to plant upside down from how grown in a pot. This position will keep the crown area and in between the leaves drier and it won’t collect water and thus potentially cause rot. Mount phals higher on a mount and being upside down, the new leaves will grow downwards.

Great video and explanation. Your orchids are very beautiful. I was always intimidated by orchids as I have always heard that they are difficult to maintain. I'm glad I got to see your video before I decided to buy my first orchid. They are a beautiful addition to any home. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.
