    My main problem has always been tension in the left hand. This exercise substantially decreased the tension. This helps not only with vibrato, but with passages as well. Had to show my professor Dont's Caprice 17 and I used this method on the day of my lesson. Made a huge difference in a matter of minutes. Thank you, Mr. Kurganov!

    Yesterday I watched this video, and proceeded to have a breakthrough practice session. Thanks to your advice, I felt much more in tune with the instrument and aware of our exchange. I realized that a heightened playing ability comes with a heightened presence of mind. Before this video, I was literally breaking a sweat practicing vibrato because of how tense I was! But yesterday's practice was like a luxury spa session, it was so relaxing. Thanks friend!

    Thank you very much for these tips, Daniel. They really do help those of us who have problems with 'our' vibrato. After playing for some decades (really) and playing AMEB (Australia) 6-8grade pieces I still haven't managed a good, effortless vibrato. I know that's crazy but it is not my first instrument and though I took proper lessons/instruction this, for some unknown reason, was not covered. You might really not realise how much a tip like the first one 'scroll support' has on one's practicing vibrato but I can tell you it has had a big impact for me.Thanks again for all your tips and help they really do, err, help. - Mark, Australia.

    Another great post 👍👍. I used to practice scroll support a lot, with a sock around the scroll, using a bookcase for support. Immensely effective exercises can result. Never tried the string method, but will incorporate 🙂. Your advice is excellent - detailed, well researched, and sound (literally!).

There are many who can't afford to get access to such information. May God bless you abundantly and give you loads of success.
    A request, can you please make a video that gives information about all the violin techniques a student has to learn? Please name the techniques in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced categories. And also please if you could arrange them in like a chronological order so that we get an organized list of which technique (in every category) we start with and then move on to the second technique and the third and so on. Like an in depth list of techniques that are there for the violin. I will be greatly indebted to you for this.

    Daniel your small finger is often "doing something" when you show the vibrato .Either it raises too far or curls up a bit. Try to switch off that "something " to make it relax as you do vibrato .

    I think my problem is too much thumb force as a result of playing mandolin and guitar.
    When I watch Perleman, it's as if his thumb is free floating.
    I think this may be why my violin shakes when I do vibrato.
    You're the first one who has mentioned the thumb force.

    • @DanielKurganov
      @DanielKurganov  Před 3 lety +2

      As a guitarist myself, I can tell you you’re observation is on point. Ultimately it should take far less effort from the left hand on the violin vs. guitar to achieve a basic clean tone.

    I'm an accomplished cellist with a good mainly finger vibrato. Porting that to the violin is nonetheless very difficult. The twisting of the arm and less direct angle of the hand changes everything. Very frustrating!

  • @macmuc3364
    @macmuc3364 Před 2 lety

    Great video!
    Some violinists have a problem that a thumb moves a lot during vibrato as well as the wrist, making the vibrato unstable. What would be your recommendation in this case?

    • @DanielKurganov
      @DanielKurganov  Před 2 lety +1

      Sounds like a recalibration of the movement is necessary. As mentioned in the video, the thumb should have no part in the vibrato. It should be loose and maintain light contact with the neck. It's hard to describe the process of troubleshooting that via text, but I would start with very slow vibrato and speed it up gradually, noticing when the problem begins to occur.

    Hi Daniel! Can I send you an email about 11:31 to 11:38? I don't understand - do you mean the motion should follow the same line as the string???
    Nvm I figured it out - my left hand wasn't rotated enough, causing a slipping thumb and a vibrato motion not aligned with the fingerboard. Switched the hand position and my left thumb was finally stable, I could relax completely, and my forearm, elbow, and upper arm were no longer moving! I feel inspired. I have a Stanick shaped viola and thought I'd have to switch instruments. I don't!
