Sensitivity Over Aryan Migration Due To 2 Misconceptions, Says 'Early Indians' Author | The Quint

  • Is there such a thing as ‘pure’ race? Senior journalist Tony Joseph recently published his book Early Indians: The Story of Our Ancestors and Where We Came From - an ambitious project that looks at path-breaking DNA research and archaeological and linguistic evidence to answer some uncomfortable and highly contested questions: Who are our ancestors and where do they come from? Did the ‘Aryans’ really migrate to India? Who were the Harappans? When did India get the caste system?
In this interview, Joseph tries to answer these questions.

Caste !! no one has any proper idea as to why from generation to generation. But if your overall look at different castes there are few common things. (those traditions of praying God in a certain manner, having trust and belief, doing work and treating work as a God, passing on skills from father to children or with in the same caste, supporting the same caste( which might have come later - but Humanity comes first) etc. So these are basic traditions formed based on local conditions of those times. Nowadays how many people know tradition or have developed skills? None, so it seems to be nonsense. But look otherwise, traditions not only taught a few things it is a restriction for oneself from doing wrong. It is an auto check system if the only one has the belief. And based on a few outdated things it is wrong to say that the whole caste system is only birth (that is how the system works - to keep everyone balanced) with such a complicated system of restriction India has 1.8 Billion. Imagine like wester culture marrying and having kids randomly might lead to 18 billion. Also cross breed marriages are a special topic again but I guess it is even difficult to read until this part.

But if you look at population density in this part of world, its larger than any other nation or continent. Which makes me think that may be because this land is well suited for survival of humans and reproduction , humans got settled here and the population grew exponentially then slowly some groups of people started migrating to other lands due to disputes between them, and in that way people kept spreading to all over world. Western historians say that Aryans came from Europe but look at facts, and you see population density is much much dense in INDIA and CHINA than any other place in world which clearly indicates that people in this part of world have been settled for long long time before in any other part of world and then small groups started migrating to other parts and that's how population spread across world.over thousands of years people got adopted to those locations and climatic conditions and their color, and physical appearance too changed. As other people saying in comment section, Indians are not mixed races, but either Aryan or Dravidian, ya I agree mix-up happened in recent times but till last fee 100's of years it was either Aryan or Dravidian. Aryans use to use Sanskrit for all their scriptures and Dravidian use to use Tamil for their scriptures. Now this is the reason you see most of the European languages got Sanskrit worlds in them and most of Asian (example :south Korean) or African languages got Dravidian words in them. Sanskrit is an ancient language and even Dravidian is ancient and both got deep rooted connection with sanathana dharma.

This family is completely different from Dravidian language family (some nationalist call it tamil language family).
Sanskrit was made lingua franca (comman tongue) of ancient India by majority of intellectuals. Although buddhist and Jain people kept using their traditional languages (which were sister languages of standard sanskrit).
Most intellectuals used to learn sanskrit as in modern day they learn ENGLISH.
Sanskrit had the status of what english has today.
There were some lost language families too. Like harappan language and script. It doesn't matches with any other languages family in India or in the world.
Most probably it is lost language family.

This was put forward by communis, europians like british because they have idendity. Europen is an idea not a idendity. @shanthsp2002 Před 3 lety +16

They develop over the time - slowly... the practice is less in the beginning and in fewer people, then slowly over centuries the practice becomes prominent. So the author probably meant that the caste system took firm root in about 100 CE. Prior to that , the practice may have existed but it probably was not there among all people of India, or was there among only a few groups (like the royalty) or was more flexible in general.

I am Hindu of Centre-Right convictions. Expected to see some extreme left wing propaganda. But I found some very reasonable points made:
1.We ARE a mixed people (exact mix is unknown and probably not that important)
    2. The caste system was a socio-political construct, which later found some scriptural backing through retroactive interpretation.
What makes "Aryan migration" contentious and potentially dangerous has nothing to do with any delusion of racial purity, but
    a) The suggestion that all of our civilizational output was imported wholesale, as opposed to being indigenously developed. I'm glad Mr. Joseph steers clear of such claims.
    b) The misguided conclusion that *some* people draw: That some present-day Indians are pure descendants of the invading Aryas and others are pure descendants of the oppressed natives, which also the speaker refutes.
Probable point of divergence (What makes me more Right): Despite not based on a single language or narrowly defined faith and far from being perfect (whatever that means), our civilization is uniquely identifiable, and is a vital source of identity and pride to many of us. This makes us a Civilization-state (as opposed to a nation state).

The country Name Iran itself means "Land of the Aryans" and Iranshahr. The very close relation between Iranian and Indo-Aryan groups has never been doubted. They share linguistic features to such a degree that Indo-Iranian is generally described as a distinct subgroup of Indo-European. The term Arya has been used by the Iranian people, as well as by the rulers and emperors of Iran, from the time of the Avesta.
The well-attested Indo-Iranian languages are Vedic Sanskrit, Avestan and Old Persian. Sanskrit and Avestan are very closely related languages with exact grammatical principles and numerous cognates [Blood Relative]. You can find words which are exactly identical, like Sanskrit/Avestan naman (name), ushtra (camel) etc.
Language, literature, epics & poems evolves every century. In Vedic/Hindu literature, Asuras (Ahuras) are bad guys while Devas are heroes. In Zoroastrian/Persian literature, Ahuras (Asuras) are heroes while Daevas are the villains.
When the Vedic Aryans moved further, they arrived in the Indian subcontinent they were faced by the native Dravidians, Dravidians that got conquered were placed as low caste in Vedic Aryan society. The Vedic Aryans continued to call the enemy as “Asuras", but the description of the Asuras changed to Dravidians (i e. present day south-Indians) with dark skin, large facial hair etc.
This itself is a proof that Rigveda evolved in Persia i.e. present day Iran and moved to Indian sub-continent. Initially Asuras (Ahuras) were referring to Zoroastrian/Persian and in later days Asuras were used to refer Dravidians.
We have all the proofs for Aryan invasion in Rig Veda itself. Dasyus were the people who lived in India when the Aryans arrived here. They were having a dark-skin and flat noses. Battles depicted in the R̥gveda are directly referring to Aryans migrating into India which is native land of dark skinned people Dravidians. Rig Veda - Dasa: 54 hymns and 63 verses and Dasyus: 65 hymns, 80 verses. The accounts of conflict between the Aryans and the Dasas and Dasyus are acknowledged in Rig Veda.
Rig Veda describes that Dasas and Dasyus were people who do not perform sacrifices. Aryans had to fight with these people for land. The Aryans defeated them and did not treat them well. The Aryan chief who overpowered Dasyus were called dasyuhatya (slaughter of the dasyus) this is repeatedly mentioned in the Rig Veda.
Read the following to know more on this same subject
Aryan by Birth - Upper Caste Fair Skin NORTH Indian (Brahmin, Kshatriyas & Vaisyas)
Dravidian by Birth - Lower caste Dark Skin Sudras & Paraiahs / Panchamas (Dalits / Tribes)
People living in Indian Sub continent who are ALL fair in complexion have mostly Steppe land R1A1 genes in their DNA these people are basically Aryan. More than caste it is the Skin color which decides whether some one is Aryan Or Dravidians. People living in Indian Sub continent who are Dark in complexion have mostly South Asian Hunter Gatherer genes in their DNA these people are Dravidian [Tamils] basically.
Tamils means all Sudras & Paraiahs / Panchamas (Dalits / Tribes) lived/living across Indian sub - continent. Even today, you can see dark skinned and pale dark skinned people living across India in all places, they were all Tamils only in ancient India. "Justice H N Nagamohan Das Commission panel" says, Indian Vedic philosophy lead to social inequality and caste system, All these happened because of Brahmins, Upanishads, Manusrmiti, and epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana...” the commission said in its July 2020 report, which the BJP government formally accepted.
The panel report also says that people belonging to Dravidian race resided in North India once upon a time. “Many foreign invaders such as ARYANS, Persians, Greeks, Huns, Turks, Mongolians, Europeans etc came and fought against local people. The rulers who won the war developed relations with local women and consequently emerged mixed races”
About Kasthriyas, who ever had the courage and willpower they counqured the land [It is very difficult for a Sudhra to achieve this], for them even if they are from lower caste, Brhamins did NOT had any choice. So, Brahmins accepted who ever won the war as Kasthriyas except Muslim. Kasthriya Kings always married fair and good looking girls mostly. So, Kasthriyas community have a mix of Upper caste and lower caste DNAs in them.
The ancient text Manusmriti designate the Shudra as Peasants and Artisans i.e. Farmers and All Craftsman, Shudra is NOT to mean slaves.
Read the following facts about DNA Studies.
Why R1A1 DNA originates in EUROPE, but not in india. why it is it not found or too less in percentage among South Indian people ?
Why M haplogroups DNA is not found in Upper caste Aryans or North indians ? If found why so less ?
If you have read Vedas there are lots of mention about a food made of Horse meat, then why HORSES are not native to INDIA ?
Why copper hoard culture found only with Aryans, but not with Dravidians ?
Why antenna swords found in Sinauli - India which belongs to BMAC - Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex ?
Haplo M is found among 60% of modern day indians. It is in every person from south. But here’s the main catch ! It’s only found in depressed classes of northern and tribal peoples of northen india. But, almost to zero to 1-4% among Higher caste Aryans or North indians.
Just like R1A1 not found in south in the same way south’s M groups are not found among R1A1 peoples of north.
So, it is proved beyond doubt that "ALL upper caste Fair Skin North Indians are ALL ARYANS, and all lower caste Dark Skin Sudras & Paraiahs / Panchamas (Dalits / Tribes) are all Dravidians"

This is a sensitive topic for many Indians as well since many have their identity attached to greatness of noble Vedic culture and Aryan ancestry.
A few questions that pop in mind:
    * If India's political boundary today also included all the ancient Vedic cultures (Europe, Iran etc) and was called "Bharata", would one still be trying to prove "Out of India" theory?
    * Why not have a "Out of Kishkinda" theory where forest dwellers of Kishikinda jungles moved northward and mixed with Indians living in the gangetic plain (sure they do have some common genes)? or an "Out of Mexico or Brazil" theory where European migration into Americas never happened but it was the reverse?
    * How does one account for the fact that Europeans and most other Indo-European speakers in West Asia DO NOT HAVE any (that is, zero or virtually zero) South Asian IVC-related admixture in their DNA? (IVC = Indus Valley)? Does it not clearly show the direction of migration?
I think an Aryan "Migration" happened and not invasion - IVC was already on a decline when Aryans came to India. Sure there were some initial violent interactions between Aryans and early settlers people in IVC, but that was a norm between different tribes/races around the world at that time and shouldn't be judged by today's moral standards (Classic books such as Sapiens or Third Chimpanzee is a great read in this area). My admiration for "Maryada purushottam" Lord Rama or Vedas still stands tall despite Aryan migration.
An example of invasion is what Putin is doing in Ukraine today which is totally immoral.
I do understand there could be a political ramification of this where a certain section calls "descendants of these Aryan settlers" (read "upper castes") as "foreigners". Many fear this has the potential to divide India and I acknowledge that sentiment, however in today's connected globalized multicultural world, people of all cultures/castes/races are "melting", does it matter anymore?
If one reads books such as Sapiens and The Third Chimpanzee, we would understand how homo sapiens around the world are all connected, and have continuously migrated & come together to bring about big changes in how we live since we were hunter gatherers. No ethnic group around the world can claim an “original” homeland anymore, including the aborigines in Andaman or in Papua New Guinea. People need to be educated about this and the one-ness of entire humanity and not fall into trap of "one group is more exclusive/superior than other". Ironically, isn't this what "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" is about which we Indians are so familiar with?
We shouldn't judge history by today's moral standards. History should be accepted as it is without any shame - be it good or bad. Glory of our ancient past doesn't become any less, and I am still proud of our Aryan forefathers.
In conclusion, I would like to say that choice of words do matter as it has the power to send subconscious messages when we hear them. The words "invasion / raiders / annihilators / barbarians" isn't the right one to use for reasons mentioned above - context and history should be taken into account as well. Historians have a moral responsibility to be sensitive to perceptions created by the words they use.

Yes, history has been written by the winners and conquerors for all the time. But that needs to be changed now. Digging up civilizations and writing history is not an easy job like selling propoganda, it comes with great effort. Humans survived in this world for more than 2,50,000 years, yet we know so less about our ancestors, so at least we may learn what is true be it good or bad, doesn't matter. It's our responsibility.

Also, if this were to happen, Europeans would have South Asian IVC ancestry, which they do not. The Sintashta and Andronovo cultures preceded Vedic culture and all that. Indo-Aryan languages have BMAC loanwords and other branches of Indo-Iranian languages do not, and neither do any other Indo-Europeans families. The Scythians (they were Aryan, just a little different from the normal Indo-Iranians they ran into) were displaced from the Central Asian Steppe and entered India and Iran. Then the Kushans, who displaced the Scythians, were themselves displaced by another tribe, and then they did the same thing. Why on Earth would anyone go in the other direction? India and the Iranian plateau are much better places to stay than the (generally) cold, arid, infertile steppe, and of course, Siberia. The Aryan tribes in Central Asia must have been displaced and came in waves, both violently and peacefully, but all with the ultimate result of settling and assimilating, just like the group of Scythians and Kushans. Haplogroups are sequences in the sex chromosome that are passed from mother to daughter or father to son, their concentrations tell us about a people's migration history, Y-Haplogroups are used because men ran around invading, migrating, and, well, marrying women from other places so Y-Haplogroups are more widespread. The Y-Haplogroups R1a1 and R1b(something something, you only need to know the R1a and R1b) are associated with the Indo-Europeans. They clearly originated somewhere in the Pontic-Caspian Steppe, but aside from that they are found in higher concentrations among Europeans than Indians, overall. This too, there was a higher diversity, Aryans and Slavs are of the Haplogroup R1a whereas the other Indo-Europeans were of R1b, only R1a moved into India. Indo-Europeans were among the first to drink milk into adulthood. Most humans, after a certain age, lose their lactose tolerance, in other words, they lose the ability to produce lactase - the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose- and undigested lactose builds up in their intestines and makes them sick. But, Indo-Europeans had higher concentrations of the lactase persistence gene, which ensures that they produce lactase into adulthood. Because of this, Indo-Europeans were healthier than sedentary farming populations, and whatever. But the way this shows the direction of movement lies in that Europeans, especially Western Europeans have the highest amounts, originally it would have only been 1/4 of the population but due to famines, natural selection killed off those who could not resort to milk as a means of sustenance. But anyway, the amount got smaller as Indo-Europeans approached India. In addition, Hindu oral tradition clearly shows the direction of movement, and acknowledges that the Adivasi tribe are not related to them. The Adivasi tribes' prevalence also makes this unlikely. To humanize the idea of "Why would you exit India?", imagine that you are in a hypothetical Indo-European IVC. You and a bunch of people move North into Central Asia and Southern Siberia, leaving your urban utopia for some odd reason. Somehow, you magically forget the cultivation of crops and spend all your time herding cattle, and domesticate the horse. Now you are poor, hungry, and cold. Now imagine you are the hypothetical proto-Aryan in that place, you grew up poor, hungry, and cold and knew nothing more than animal herding, and you guys are nomads to begin with. You get on your horse and move South because another tribe has displaced you, or you need better grazing areas, or any other push factor you can think of, your people are nomadic so you will move. Then you meet the Oxus civilization people who teach you how to cultivate crops in return for the great metals your people are unique and recognizable for. Learning these new things and not knowing what to call them, you just use their words for it, causing loanwords to enter your language. Then you go further south and meet the magnificent IVC, but they are already in decline. You learn many things about them and they influence your culture, but there may be sporadic fighting, disputes, but also intermixing. Ultimately you displace them, and inherit this great fertile land, and use your newly acquired knowledge to transform into a more agricultural society. Would you now go back? I know that was a bit too long but the point is, why would Aryans leave India? The Andronovo culture looks poor as heck.

Beautiful explanation. More than half of the population is mixed breed, so there's no need be sensetive about it. What's needed is accept the fact and move on from people's side. There's nothing wrong in being Aryan or Dravid, as I said, more than half of population are mixed breed and moreover we all have been living together since thousands of years. Recently, geneticists have begun using these two terms (to avoid much controversy): Ancestral North Indian (ANI) and Ancestral South Indian (ASI).
    * ASI is the population mixture of Iranian agriculturalists with the first settlers (hunter-gatherers) of India from Africa (mixing occurred around 9000 years ago [7000 BC]).
    * ANI is the population mixture of the Steppe pastoralists ("Aryans") with the ASI (mixing began around 4000 years ago [2000 BC]).
Today, every Indian (except in certain regions such as North-East India and tribes in Andaman islands) has a mixture of both ASI and ASI genetic makeup. No one has pure ANI or pure ASI genetic makeup. Only the percentage of each differs in each individual based on many factors, including region; so South Indians tend to have more ASI genes than ANI.
The Africans who settled in India 65,000 years ago are the original inhabitants. Their genes are present in all Indians as I mentioned above as ASI and ANI.

No specific Indian is really the original inhabitant. It’s pretty complicated and the whole pizza layer example oversimplifies the genetic history of South Asia. A split occurred between a population ancestral to most West Asians, Central Asians and North Africans and a population ancestral to the Veddas, Adivasis and other scheduled groups of South Asia.
The genetic divergence occurred somewhere between the Indus Valley region and Central India with the ancestral West Eurasian groups moving west to populate the Near East, Arabian Peninsula, Europe and North Africa. Those ancestral West Eurasians who remained became the major ancestors of Harappans and other pre Indo-European groups of South Asia. During the Neolithic, they received minor genetic admixture from agricultural migrants originating from Southwestern Iran or what was once known as Elam but overall their genetic structure remained mostly South Asian which is why most people from the region still have more South Asian DNA than West Asian admixture. Later Indo-European migrations added new components like North Eurasian which the IE people had mixed along with West Asian DNA from Northwestern Iran.
Interactions throughout South Asia paved way for all components to be spread out in the overall population so it’s not gonna do justice to South Asian demographic history by saying that one group originally inhabited the entirety of South Asia. One forgets the diversity in not only population but also climate and UV levels which also influence phenotype, believe it or not.

Dravidians were migrants too they travelled from west Asia about 11000 yrs ago and mixed with native Indian (adivasis) . They flourished for millennials and formed the most advanced ancient civilization called the harrapan civilization. About 5000 yrs ago the proto-indo europeans migrants from steppes grassland (present day Kazakhstan) who learned to tame horses and use iron migrated all over Europe , Iran and south Asia using their horses. The PIE group got separated and a branch called the proto-indo Iranians settled in ancient Iran . One of those groups headed India and repopulated the north Indian subcontinent and drove the dravidians to the south. But there was no any reproductive isolation between Aryans and Dravidians and they got pretty mixed up. The future generations of these mixed people wrote vedic texts and thus Hinduism came into being.
