Horizon Zero Dawn the fastest, easiest, cheapest way to farm a Thunderjaw

  • This must be the fastest, easiest, cheapest way to farm a Thunderjaw ...and not a tripwire in sight.
    Method:
You will need two sharpshot bows; one buffed for damage, one buffed for tear and one war bow buffed for freeze.
Pre-load each bow with 3x precision arrows, 3x tear arrows and 3x freeze arrows. Set the difficulty to the lowest setting. First shoot with freeze, then blast off the armour over his heart with the tear arrows and then shoot his heart with the precision arrows for over 14500 damage in one hit. That's 3 shots, 9 arrows and all over in 5 seconds or less. Just a whisker over a minute per run, all included.

So how is it possible to get 14508 damage with just one hit? It's because there are numerous damage multipliers that are all stacking at once.
If you pause the video on the weapon select wheel, you'll notice I have the sharpshot bow buffed with 3x purple damage mods to give it a base damage of 484. This is very high damage, but the triple shot raises that to 1452. But then there are a further 10x damage multipliers achieved by shooting the Thunderjaw in the exposed heart and also while he is frozen, giving a final damage of over 14500. I think it only takes 7000 damage to kill him.
This demonstration is done on very easy mode to achieve the maximum possible damage, but it will work on higher difficulties. On ultra hard more shots will definitely be required but the multipliers work just the same. However if you are 'farming' the Thunderjaw for mods and resources, it makes sense to do it on the easiest mode to guarantee the fastest kill each time. One hour farming him with this method will give you 180 purple mods and more loot than you can carry. If you are planning an ultra hard playthrough on New Game + for the platinum trophy, this is a great way to buff Aloy prior to that playthrough.

Interesting but that sounds like cheating, changing difficulties mid game to get resources is no fun, atleast for me plus i prefer a challenging difficulty and it's fun to grind and more rewarding. Interesting video though might use your startegy of of taking down a thunderjaw without lowering the difficulty.

@@thabangsibanda3282 So play on ultra-hard which locks the difficulty so you cant do this. In fact if you want the platinum trophy, you have to do that ...or you did 3 years ago when I got it. Killing it in less than 30 seconds requires best weapons, not just "getting the hang of it" .

    • @Martyntd5
      @Martyntd5  Před 6 měsíci

@@GameslordXY Yeah, you need to get to Meridian in the main story first, because you need multiple versions of the bows used. They dont need to be the best, but they need to be pretty decent. Same with the mods, but you don't need the best, again just good enough ...and they get better because you're farming mods.
Basic armor is fine because you shouldn't get hit.
Yeah, it's harder at higher levels, but why farm at higher levels? OK if you're just fighting for fun or the training, then OK. But if you're just farming, you should have the difficulty set to 'story' (I have completed this game on ultra hard and have the trophy for it.).
You don't need much in the way of resources, because it's only costing you precision and tear arrows. Many of those components can be harvested from the Thunderjaw, but if you are running out, fast travel to Meridian, sell a bunch of Purple Mods you dont need and buy what you need for the arrows.
Probably the biggest thing needed is the triple shot skill. That takes time to acquire. Basically you cant use this technique as a noob, but it's definitely doable from Meridian and on.
You definitely do need to get the hang of rapidly switching between bows on the weapons wheel, because once you've hit it with the tear arrows, the freeze effect wears off, leaving you with just a couple of seconds.
to get the last shot in before you lose the 'frozen' damage multiplier.

If your not as much of a madlad I have a strategy that is also pretty easy . My first shot I load 3 frost arrows and then keep shooting them until, he is frozen. Then I switch to hard point arrows and spam those while trying to aim for the disc launcher if I can knock it of I use that to finish the fight . Usually it’s heathbar is about halfway depleted when I start shooting the disc launcher. This strategy doesn’t require as many upgrades as the strategy shown in the video so this method can be done slightly earlier in the game. Hope this helps . Ps I suck a the game so I’ve only done this on easy and normal difficulty. A higher difficulty may require a different strategy or u may have to do the frost arrow thing twice

Run amongst them taking potshots, rolling, dodging, jumping, diving and wotnot. They are easy enemies to defeat, but defeating them is not the object. The object is to stay calm and develop your dodging and precision. I did a little video of the sort of thing here: czcams.com/video/7me8puvH6_8/video.html ...if you spend half an hour now and then aggroing chargers in this way, you'll be amazed how much your combat skills improve in the rest of the game.

I always load 3 arrows and my handling (even with my powershot/sharpshot bows) is maxed out to 60 (on all my 4 adept powershot bows specifically) so it doesn't make much of a difference to me since my high handling points wouldn't make me wait more than a second for the +2 arrows to be loaded up, but good advice because it makes the runs prior to cool fights more dinamic and straight to the point, and starting to run immediately after the load up button might save your life if ur low on health, and most players won't probably manage to make a sharpshot/powershot bow very high on both damage and handling at the same time, i farmed a total of 11 pristine weapon coils in 11 headache speedruns so i got no problem with maxing out completely the 4 bows anymore

It's in the description "You will need two sharpshot bows; one buffed for damage, one buffed for tear ...and one war bow buffed for freeze." That's basically it. Each bow has a full compliment of high value purple mods, very near the max possible in each slot. In most cases, I was able to use mods with a high handling secondary value, but the most important thing was maxing the bow for either freeze, damage or tear. For this particular method, handling is not very important.
I could show you the build in a separate video, but there is not much point because you wont be able to replicate the exact build, because you wont be able to get the exact same mods. But it doesnt matter, if you follow the principle in the description, it will work for you just the same. :)

@@consoletantreviews8181 In game it's actually better than this vid as the PS4 capture seems to leave it a bit choppy on occasion, but I thought the game ran well, even with 2 of em and a bunch of other stuff running around. But this vid was done before any DLC's were available, maybe that's it?

@@consoletantreviews8181 Not for me. I actually platinum'd this game 3 years ago and as I'm sure you know, that requires a play through on ultrahard. I had no issues aside from taking a long time to load saves. I actually thought the game ran really well on the base ps4. Here's another vid I did killing a thunderjaw on ultrahard with low level weapons, my combat kind of sucks, but you can see there is no lag: czcams.com/video/qkTJ3lS35g4/video.html

Do you think so? It's only one shot from it and I cant imagine how it could be done quicker without it? You have to expose the heart in order to get the damage multipliers. Every other method I could think of, would take more than one additional shot. How would you do it?
Edit, I've just seen your fast kill video, yeah that is quicker, good job.

Yes, I agree. This is fun, rolling under thunderjaws in ultrahard with regular armour: czcams.com/video/5ADjmKUaRtc/video.html ...or trying to kill them with sticky bombs while riding on their back : czcams.com/video/xZrucwK41hI/video.html ...but having fun is not the point of this video.

I thought it was a well known location. It's the plateau to the north-east of Meridian where there is a thunderjaw walking round in circles on it's own. I think it's the first thunderjaw fight you encounter in the story. It's just a convenient farming location because there are no other enemies to deal with and it's near a campfire.
