    I'm on a roadtrip with Frederik in the United Kingdom and Wales and meet up with Andy and Jacques.
    Our first mission is to go to an abandoned sea fort in Wales where we will stay about 24 hours.
    This fort was built between 1850 and 1852 and had to protect a royal dock against a Napoleonic invasion. The fort was fully disarmed in 1929, but you can still find some artefacts like cannons.

    Love how your UK trip with British people instantly descends into getting wrecked together lol What an amazing adventure and an incredible site! I’m honestly so envious of this one Bob - I’m stuck in a fairly boring situation at the moment and the spirit of this video and the good vibes gave me a real boost, so cheers for that!

    In 1852, they absolutely had concrete of differing binder compositions. Portland cement was invented in England in 1824 and in regular production by the 1840s. The first reinforced concrete was in 1853. The bricks are likely mortared with it or natural/Roman cement. But this early Portland was very susceptible to attack from sea salt and also expensive to use en masse because production techniques weren't quite as advanced as they are now, so it'd probably have been cheaper and faster to build with brick, not to mention the labor would be more readily available since Portland was so new.

    This was incredibly special, historical. Can you imagine the sound from those cannons? The smell of gunpowder. Absolutely deafening especially because it is round the sound would have reverberated throughout the fort. I wonder if they ever got to use the canons there. In the early 19th century, they would have had animals, chickens, goats, possibly rabbits for eating. They would have kept livestock and food stocks in case of invasion and not able to resupply for some time. These forts had to be pretty self sufficient.

    The small internal windows would have been glazed on the magazine side and a lantern placed from in the recess from the narrow (light corridor) side that seperated the casements and magazines. This to prevent flame's being taken in to the powder magazine and provided illumination without risk of explosions.

    Here in Bermuda we have British forts of the same period. In fact we have one or two that started life in the early 16 hundreds and were continually upgraded until the late 1940s.
    That makes this fort particularly interesting and familiar in many ways. There are RMLs restored to their original stations in semi-circular installations just as they are there. Brilliant explore, and thank you!

    • @midwestmike613
      @midwestmike613 Před 8 měsíci

      Are they abandoned there as well? Or are they used for something other than a sea bird sanctuary?

    • @denniseldridge2936
      @denniseldridge2936 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@midwestmike613 I did some research into Bermuda's military history, from the very beginning. It seems that Bermuda has had a very important strategic position, being some 770 miles from the East Coast of the US.
      So we became quite heavily fortified against anticipated attacks by, variously, the Spanish, the French, the new United States, Germany, and finally the Soviet Union. This left us with more fortiifications per square inch than anywhere on earth I think lol. As for the British fortifications of the 18th-19th centuries, generally they had installations at the extreme ends of the island, and a few major and minor ones in the middle, being as we're a long, thin island as opposed to more rounded.
      Quite a few of them have been convert to other uses. Some are museums, others to recreational areas and nature sanctuaries.

    This fortress looks a lot like IJmuiden Fortress island (same era). The ammunition storage has windows for candles, and a long hallway so you can light the candles. While there was not electricity, and candlelight (or an oil lamp of some sort) was the only light that was down there. So it seems like a waste of space the hallways, but they certainly had a purpose.
    They could make it into a museum, that is what they did in IJmuiden when in 1996 the entire Defense Line of Amsterdam was put on the UNESCO world heritage list. You can go there by boat 3 times a day on the weekends, on other days they have escape rooms and workshops there. Going out with everyone of the job and have yourself a teambuilding experience sort of deal.
    The place has potential.
    Cool trip, i like it a lot. Seagulls are shitty im mobs. As long as they are kept at bay, it should be fine.
    Greetings,
    Jeff
