  • This video is an update following the previous one on how the tunnel and farm scenics were achieved, plus the station lights are now on. I have added to the station and will continue to do so over the coming weeks. I also ask for some advice from my fellow enthusiasts - please leave a comment below with your views.

Hi Steve fantastic work rate ballast the hard to get to places, then after that doing a bit of this then a bit of that then it varies thing then you don't get bored and start rushing just to get it done. Have a good week. Colin

Greetings Steve 🐲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 👋 Lots of progress 👏 👏👏👏 and the farm 🚜 really looks 😍 the part 👍 Ballasting now is probably the best option 🤔 Much better getting all the track stuff done before moving on to the scenic stuff 👍 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️

You really have achieved a lot Steve. It always amazes me how just a bit of scenery transforms a track plan into a layout. The farm and the mine look good and the trains looked good entering the tunnel beneath. I particularly liked the view across the Pannier with the coal wagons sitting in the station with its lights as the passenger train came through. It really looked good especially with the eye being drawn to the backscene. As to your question, I made the mistake of leaving the ballasting of my furthest corner until I had put things in at the front of the layout. It really limits how far you can reach, if you re also having to go over even quite low scenery in the front. I had to buy a collapsible step stool (actually it is a handy thing to have in case you need to reach the back - a little bit of height can make all the difference with reach) to avoid biffing everything in front. I have also seen your question asked on various forums and facebook pages. The strong consensus of the advice given is that you ballast first and do scenery second, once you are sure all the track is in its final place and working fine. Stephen

Hi Steve! Making very swift progress as usual! The farm area is looking great! I love the farm track that winds its way around the scene! I agree with the consensus of opinion about ballasting track in hard to reach areas before tackling the scenic work! All the best, Ian.

Cheers Ian ... yes I'm working on that this week plus the bridge you suggested .... might as well with all the rain we're getting!

Cracking update Steve. You've made really good progress which is clear to see. Enjoyed seeing the trains run. As for when to ballast - definitely before any scenic work. Once you have your ballast shoulders in it's amazing how much a scenic area shrinks ! My own view is once the ballast is in it can give you a different perspective on what you might do scenic wise. You can of course cover the track and ballast if working over it when doing the scenery. Cheers Euan

Hi Steve, another great video. I would certainly suggest ballasting the hard to reach areas at the back of the layout and work your way forward.
    All the best, Allan.

Hi Steve, great progress mate the farm does look really good. Now, as for ballasting by reading the other comments it’s best to do it now before the scenic work. I’m pleased you asked that as I haven’t ever quite got to the ballasting stage so when I do this time I’ll know when to do it! I’m not even sure of what to use for ballast, I have a couple of bags of Woodland Scenics fine ballast but I’ve also heard that Chinchilla sand is good and kiln dried sand because of how fine it is. I think I’ll do a couple of test pieces to see.
Nice work Steve, cheers for now, John

Hi JOhn - I've got some fine ballast left over from the first model from Woodland Scenics so will be using that up first - a tip I did see was to use black paint in the the water/glue mix to "dirty up" the ballast so it look more realistic so will be trying some of that.

Hi Steve, i would keep running as many trains as you can testing everything possible until you can sign off that the track is as good in testing as it can possibly be. Then may be split the layouts into 6-8 sections and work on one at a time starting with ballasting.Skills will get better with each section so strat with the one furthest away first.

Hi Steve, good progress made with the layout and farm looking great with all the scenery added! I’m probably not the best person to comment as I’ve done a lot of scenery and not ballasted but I think the consensus is to ballast first! I would be absolutely sure your happy first with your track plan and running, in my case I’ve changed track plan many times and also had running issues so glad that I didn’t ballast 😂😉 Cheers Gary

Yes Gary thats seems to be the consensus - I think though I will replace one of my points first as it seems to trip the power every now and again despite a thorough cleaning and replacement wiring.I'll make a start on the ballasting then replace the point on wednesday after visiting the Great Eastern Model shop. I haven't been for three weeks so their profit must be down!

  • @PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIreland

Hi Steve, believe it or not I to was a complete rookie and having done a little bit of scenic I then ballasted. The glue went straight to it all because of the same capillary action in the ballast and ruined it !
So my advice is to do the ballast first and Scenics second.
I found laying the ballast and then running some trains moved any ballast from places you didn't want it and allowed it to settle. A heavy diesel was best for this. Then glue.

      @lynganddistrict  Před 9 měsíci

Mark - that is sound advice and I will remember that when I start the ballasting. One my last layout I know I had issues after gluing down the ballast so will take extra care.

      Steve

Hi Steve, yes I would do the ballasting on the outer two tracks first save stretching over other stuff like lights and things, making good progress on farm corner enjoyed the running session except for the awful music had to turn the volume off cheers Al

Hi, I would normally ballast immediately before applying foliage, so that it overlaps the ballast. However, in a situation with a stretch I would work from the back forward regardless of 'order' as you may damage earlier work stretching over it. Hope that helps
