I WISH I COULD!!!! I had to put myself on ban from the library, it's such a shame!! But I just cannot be trusted to read these books 《and only these books》 in the allotted time. Then it runs over and you think, well, in for a penny, in for a pound, the fee is going to max out at £6/book anyway, so I might as well just get to them when I get to them... and then wait until I have £18 spare to return 3 books. Every three years I keep telling myself I've grown as a person and I could handle it now... so far I have not been correct. If I could return them and then escape with no new ones, then I could use Libby (can't use something like that with overdue books on your account...), the problem is I can't do that.

Reading through the comments, I realised how lucky I've been to live in Singapore, where there is literally a library in each neighbourhood. People don't really patronise the community library near my house for books as much as they do for the study spaces...but I feel grateful to have a library just 10 minutes from my home. They are really gems. Because of this video, I am determined to use the library more than what I've been doing instead of buying books at the first whim. Thank you Jack!
@Nisa Yes I understand! The library near my house is so cozy, but people always hog the spaces to study. So I tend to bring back my books to read. Would love to read in the library one day though
even though I stay in Singapore too, more often than not I can spend 5 hours searching for the books on my TBR, just to leave empty-handed since the books are all on loan. Have started buying books because it honestly is not so expensive (try carousell sometimes people clear out books and have sales) and there is less pressure to finish a book in the given time- it takes the joy out of reading for me
Love this video. I feel like so much of booktok has become “how many books can I buy/collect” but that’s expensive af! You’re still reading the same book if you get it from the library
So true. It’s almost a status symbol to have enormous floor to ceiling bookshelves filled with books in rainbow order lol. That’s just not accessible or relatable to most people. Reading is what should matter, not the aesthetic

Though your access might be limited to some of the digital collections; I signed up for the library in the next council over (they're also the next suburb over) but Overdrive's licence (which provides Libby) only allows access for residents of that council (which must have been a more modern restriction, it definitely wasn't the case in 2012), so I was SOL for that because my home council doesn't subscribe to Libby. :/ (though to be fair Australia's pretty lucky as our public library system hasn't been completely decimated and most local councils (both urban "city councils" and "municipal councils", and the "shire councils" which are anywhere from peri-urban to rural) will have one for their Local Government Area that they cover; _and_ I live in an urban area so I have the luxury of choice; _and& not only are (almost) all the Sydney-region public libraries in an interlibrary loan network thing coordinated by the State Library of NSW so that they don't charge each other for ILL (the patrons' fee is another matter) but most do allow for free membership for out-of-area patrons) Anyway, that's how I ended up with, uh, *counts cards* 8 local library cards (not including cards for my State Library and the National Library)! Though all but three are almost certainly expired and two of those no-longer-valid ones were affected by the great council amalgamations of 2016; with the library branch that one of them was attached to being removed from its original council and being instead attached to my home one, and another council ceasing to exist entirely.
But yeah, if you have your home council library and you can't go outside that for whatever reason, interlibrary loans and making a purchase request are definitely ways to go :)
@@PurpleShift42 that's insanely complicated rip. here in Spain you can access every library in your town with your neighborhood library card (including the State Library!), as well as ask for interlibrary loans & access the online database from your whole region. So, for example, in Australia, you could access every library in Sydney with just one card, as well as have access to the New South Wales online database and ask for interlibrary loans from any library in that state.
Also, if people consistently ask for books they don't have, that actually supports the library! It gives them proof that there is a demand for those books and helps them know which ones to buy.
IF you're a US resident, Brooklyn Public Library offers a completely electronic library card (used through Libby) to all US people with access to their huge catalogue for $50 a year, so if you can save up and read a ton of audiobooks and ebooks during that year, then it can be cost effective! And it feels great spending my money on them instead of Amazon haha.
@brooke I have a free local library, but the available books (especially audiobooks) are limited in the state I live, so paying to use another state's system that has more than 10x the available stock is worth it for me :)

I also discovered Libby this year, and I realised that YOU CAN LOOK UP WORDS IN THE APP TOO! Being a non-native speaker of English, and mainly reading English books only, this feature is BRILLIANT! Just keep your finger on the word and press 'Define', and there ya go! Loved this video, and loved getting more options for places to find books for free/cheap!
Jack, have you read Loveless by Alice Oseman? If you haven't, please do. The book takes place in Durham University, so I think you might enjoy it :) Also, a video request: For reading celebrity's favorite books, can you please do one for Matty Healy (he's the frontman of the 1975) ?

I have been wanting to go to the library. I just like the smell of old books.... That texture.... But 😫 Covid in India I can't even order books from Amazon or Flipkart because of lockdown So have moved on to Ebooks This video is exactly what I was looking for . Thanks Jack. Loved your video as always....
Hey I use this really cool website called z library . You can download 5 books per day from there for free . Have been using it for long . I am from India too
Libby (formerly Overdrive) saved me during bed rest when I was pregnant. Also, make sure you use the suspend hold feature, so you can reserve a bunch of books you want to read, and then activate the hold once you’re ready to read them (and when you’re at the head of the line). And, while I haven’t actually done this, I’ve heard from others that you can find library card numbers online to use in the app, which is helpful for people who don’t have access to a great library to lend from. If you’re a California resident, you can also get a library card from any city in CA, so you can have a bunch of different libraries to check; I make a habit of getting cards from cities we visit on vacation.
How many people here are just watching this video because Jack is an absolute ray of sunshine and him talking about literally anything brings a smile on your face?
I patron my local library. I love the librarians there who are starting to know me and my tastes and recommend things i might like. I take out 5-8 at a time and if i can’t get into one, i just stop reading and don’t have to worry about how much I’ve spent. BUT- if i LOVED one then i go out and buy it so i can look at my bookshelf and only see all my favorites. It makes me so happy to remember them. And i can loan out to friends (if i think they’ll give it back!)
the app hoopla is similar to libby as well! oil don’t know if it works with every library card, but it has a lot of options! and, whenever you travel somewhere, if you have extra free time you can always get a library card in another city and get access to their catalogue of ebooks and audiobooks through either libby or their own library apps! for example, i live in colorado but did a semester in nyc and now even though i can’t physically borrow from the nypl anymore, i still have access to the nypl digital catalogue through their app!
I recently started using little free libraries and in my city it's also common to put things you don't need anymore in "for free" boxes in front of your house. You find everything in there from kitchen utensils over books, clothes and stationary to working printers.
One of my family friends grandmother/mother passed away, I had never met the woman, but they gave me a bunch of old books, including the entire works of Shakespeare because they knew she wanted her books to go to a good home. Not saying that this is a good way to get free/cheap books, I was just commenting on the fact you mentioned the complete works of Shakespeare in this video. 😂
In my area in Italy theres a really good public library system (free) but not many young people use it. With Covid, getting books from the library got hard (the books had to stay in quarantaine for 2 weeks before you could get them!) so I gave the digital library a try. I didn't even know it existed before then. Works exactly like the hard copy library. You get e-books (of very current books) for 2-3 weeks, through the library app. Then they disappear. So people, check if your local library has a digital app!!
For those in not-USA or insert-other-country-without-developed-public-resources or people in areas with bad selections: You can cheat if you have a friend or a relative in an area with a great library, use their address! Most places only require a name, DOB, and an address, and then you access e-books online through apps like Libby! It's pretty uninvasive besides needing to know where they live. Always ask first just in case they already have a card or it causes complications :)
I mean z-library ain't exactly legal, but if you only read books by extremely famous and rich authors, like George RR Martin or j.k Rowling and so on, then why not?
@@omarhatem9575 I found red white and royal blue on there and many other books. You can also find complete works of people. I dont mind if its illegal. You could also find megapacks on there as well
I discovered Libby last year and love it! I also recently downloaded BorrowBox and have found sometimes I can find more/different books on there with the same library card 😊 ALSO you can find audiobooks on Spotify too
quick tip: to have really low prices on book depository, especially if you're from Europe, just use a VPN and either set the country to England or Ireland, it works and at least for me the price won't change during checkout
@@lilacenthusiast hey there is a really cool online bookstore on Instagram the guy sells used books and ships all over India ,like really cheap . It's called "the basement bookstore " do check it out once .
I volunteer pricing books at a charity shop and end almost every shift buying a little haul for myself! Charity shops will usually be the cheapest places to buy books as we check the prices against places like Abebooks and Amazon and make our prices slightly cheaper than that. Just requires a bit more effort/patience to find what you're looking for :)
hey jack! i know this book may not be your type, but i finished 'falling' by t.j newman today, and it's one of the best books i've ever read. it's a thriller and the plot is very well orchestrated. i hope you take this into consideration for a future video! love you!
charity shops are absolute jems! I bought the whole hunger games trilogy in really good condition for just £4 when the first book cots £7.99 brand new! a bargain!
Please make a video on how to actually read and get through books quickly. I spend too long trying to read one book, I get bored and distracted so I start another one.
The note about having a deadline from the library is such a huge motivated that I never even realized I was experiencing.. great advice.. and yes! Go download Libby!!!
I love libraries! I just got a card at my local one and in the city where I work. I was there just a few days ago to pick up Educated when the lady next to me asked the librarian about Snuggie Baine. There was a reservation list for that book but I had my bought copy in my backpack and now I have a new book buddy :)
I used to work in a charity shop and ended up taking home sooooo many books, it was unreal! (Think big, blue IKEA bags full of books...) One thing my local library does as well is give people the opportunity to donate their old books, which they will then sell on for a Euro or two. I bought a few books that way as well. So go check out your local library with this option in mind! :)
for the tiny percentage of people who live in the midwest US, in dayton, ohio there's a super cool place called the dollar book swap. does what it says on the tin: books are a dollar, and i think they do some sort of deal like $10 for a basket or something like that
Kindle unlimited has become my favorite thing! It’s a a subscription $10 a month but for someone who can read multiple books in a week it is the only subscription I have found that’s worth it. You can read as many books as your heart desires and no matter how many you read it’s only $10. I’ve realized they have a lot of thrillers and romance/smutt so if those genres are your thing, give it a try!!
i like listening to jack speak but it's really helpful to see visuals like the title of books or important stuff he mentions i think itll also improve the viewership (+background music/sound fx)
your vids have really motivated me to read more and so far i’ve read almost double of my yearly book goal already. i’ve never done that before!!! thank u
The seeds of nettles are also super delicious and filled with proteins and minerals but it will be a few more weeks before they're ready to harvest, in most of Europe at least
For anyone in Ireland - if you are a member of your local library their online catalogue allows you to search the entire Irish public library network and request any book be brought to your own local library for you to collect. They can take a week or two to arrive but it means even if your local library is small you still have access to a big collection!
Loved it as always! I'd also like to add if you are from the UK, The Works has a brilliant selection of cheap books online and in-store, as well as a 3 for £5 deal!
I also recommend the Internet Archive, which works kind of like an online library where you can "borrow" and read an ebook on their website for a certain amount of time. The website is not the most convenient to use, but I've found that it reads fine on a tablet. Also, you're probably not going to find a lot of very new books on there, but it's great for older books or classics.
I highly recommend Better World Books. They have amazing prices in used books and free shipping if you buy $15 of books. Otherwise shipping is a flat rate of $1. And they donate books to kids in need all over the world. I’ve really got some great deals from them lately!
My country does an yearly book fair for 3 days. It's the only thing I wait for every year. Although it's very crowded (I live in India!) but i love roaming through the stalls and talking to strangers about books. Also there are barely any good libraries around my house and I live in the capital! For this reason only I am really eager to go to college because most of the colleges have amazing libraries (as I have heard).
There's an app called Scribd and the subscription is around $9 I believe for the US specifically and they over 5.9 million audio, physical, books that you can have at your disposal on your mobile phone
there's a website i used to use called bookmooch where you earn points for just adding books you've read (and are willing to give away!) to your online library, with which you can request books from other ppl & they'll send it to you! you earn points for sending books to people so you're constantly exchanging books with others :-)
I'm using scribd for a few months now. It's a subscibtion for 10 euros and gives you such a big variety of e and audio books. Makes me listen to 5 books a month.
Ebooks are cheaper and you get it quickly. If you didn't like the book after all, you'd regret it less because you didn't spend as much. You can also buy physical books of your favorites later.
A lot of times, popular books have like 20 holds on them at libraries…SO I always go to the used books store because they will have plenty of copies of the most popular books in really good condition. The new/hyped up books are often pricey for the used book store but will still be less than half the price of buying brand new!
I NEEDED THIS THANK YOU It's a shame I don't have any libraries nearby my place, but atleast this video has enlightened me on the alternatives😭 (also, EARLYYY YAYYYYYY)
Also, some of the options listed here won’t work for me because I don’t live in the US or UK so libraries just won’t do, my local postal service is trash, and Book Depository can be expensive for nothing or the book I want is forever out of stock.
You guys should check out Z Library, it has pretty much any book for free and they live off of donations which are totally optional. They have a limit of 5 downloads a day but I doubt that someone will be reading 5 books a day so yeah.
libby is my ride along-on on my commute everyday and i cherish her. i had been meaning to visit my little library soon, thanks for the reminder! makes me think of animal crossing 🥺

a lot of libraries dont give you access to Libby, a lot have Borrowbox instead
yeah I know Essex does and I use that
Hoopla is another!
Just a note: Book Depository is (just like Abebooks) owned by amazon
'Having a deadline kind of gives you a sense of urgency to read that book' my overdue library book just glared at me
i went to my local little library but all i found were children’s books and irish cassettes 😩
Some libraries will order in book on request but it depends on the country and library. Worth a try though?
I have been wanting to go to the library.
I just like the smell of old books....
That texture....
But 😫
Covid in India
I can't even order books from Amazon or Flipkart because of lockdown
So have moved on to Ebooks
This video is exactly what I was looking for . Thanks Jack. Loved your video as always....
Hey I use this really cool website called z library . You can download 5 books per day from there for free . Have been using it for long . I am from India too
Bookchor and bukr are great places I got new books
@@Foodfry122 they basically charge the same prices, they adjust that into delivery charges
I mean who would pay 300-400 rs for just delivery
@@aryanrao3231 so like I live in fairly remote area. If I buy over ₹1000/- , delivery is free. Also you have to dig a lot to get 50% off.
@@Foodfry122 i don't get any books i want from there
I recently rediscovered my library, and I loved it!! Going almost every week now to get a fresh set of books:)
I've never been faster ❤️😭. I love this man and it shows
Me too!💯💯
Me too
Z Library has lots of ebooks for free. And no membership required.
Yup!!
That's piracy, isn't it?
@@maittrianand6261 couldnt care less
@@ss9392 its stealing so the author and the publishers definitely care a bit.
hi i was just wondering if it's safe to download from there?? i mean I would assume It is :p
And i can loan out to friends (if i think they’ll give it back!)
so random but i’d love to literally just get a coffee with u and talk about everything, you seem such a genuine and positive guy, i’d love to
CZcams has audiobooks up for free too, and if you have spotify premium, then there are quite a lot of options too:)
Absolutely *living* for the non-Amazon alternatives, thank you so much!!
Book Depository is owned by amazon, just so you know ;)
btw Goodreads is too
@@MsBlulucky
yes it’s so annoying! :(( I imported my entire goodreads library over to StoryGraph as soon as I found out
@@roseandtea1998 yay, another StoryGraph user :D
Ah, LibriVox, my favorite go to companion when sewing or doing chores 👌
the app hoopla is similar to libby as well! oil don’t know if it works with every library card, but it has a lot of options! and, whenever you travel somewhere, if you have extra free time you can always get a library card in another city and get access to their catalogue of ebooks and audiobooks through either libby or their own library apps! for example, i live in colorado but did a semester in nyc and now even though i can’t physically borrow from the nypl anymore, i still have access to the nypl digital catalogue through their app!
I once bought a signed hardcover book by Phillipa Gregory for £1 from a charity shop! They really are incredible! I also love second hand bookstores.
Internet archive and z-library are both great places. Also comic book plus
I also recently downloaded BorrowBox and have found sometimes I can find more/different books on there with the same library card 😊
ALSO you can find audiobooks on Spotify too
Yes! Please use your library!! It's the best place you could ever visit!
Good to know: Book Depository is also Amazon owned!
loved how you gave tips for physical as well as ebooks and audiobooks 💙 i thank you
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG ‼️ thankfulness🌷
quick tip: to have really low prices on book depository, especially if you're from Europe, just use a VPN and either set the country to England or Ireland, it works and at least for me the price won't change during checkout
along with netgalley, you can also go for booksirens
Visit India after the pandemic. Go to a second hand book store and buy any book, it won't cost more than ₹150/ £1.25. Hehe
Can you please recommend some second hand book stores, possibly in Maharashtra?
I never found a book for that price...
To be fair i never asked for a second hand book
Second hand books in the UK are similarly priced and are often cheaper (probably not in London though)
d'you know any in Bangalore?
There are classics and some more recent books with audiobooks on Spotify. Maggie Steivater has her books(Raven Cycle, Shiver, etc.) on Spotify.
Half Price Bookstore is my fave ❤️ The one in my area has the small paperback books for $2-$3.
for the tiny percentage of people who live in the midwest US, in dayton, ohio there's a super cool place called the dollar book swap. does what it says on the tin: books are a dollar, and i think they do some sort of deal like $10 for a basket or something like that
Not me buying a library card just to be able to use library reading rooms to read my books i bought 🙉
Libraries are absolutely magical places.
Laughs (read Coughs) in Covid.
Kindle unlimited has become my favorite thing! It’s a a subscription $10 a month but for someone who can read multiple books in a week it is the only subscription I have found that’s worth it. You can read as many books as your heart desires and no matter how many you read it’s only $10. I’ve realized they have a lot of thrillers and romance/smutt so if those genres are your thing, give it a try!!
me after buying basically all the books jack has recommended: 🤡🧍🏻♀️
FRFRFR CNJCJDJDJC like I just ordered around 20 the books yesterday
Lmfao same 😭🥺
i like listening to jack speak but it's really helpful to see visuals like the title of books or important stuff he mentions i think itll also improve the viewership (+background music/sound fx)
I'm a library person, I love that place!
your vids have really motivated me to read more and so far i’ve read almost double of my yearly book goal already. i’ve never done that before!!! thank u
The seeds of nettles are also super delicious and filled with proteins and minerals but it will be a few more weeks before they're ready to harvest, in most of Europe at least
So grateful for this type of video, I've spent so much on books this is a god send Jack :)
I just used World Of Books to get 5 novels for £20! Highly recommend omg :D
Another tip: the books app on your phone/ipad/mac has nearly all the classics for free!!
different libraries use different ebook/eaudiobook services!- if libby doesnt work, try borrow box xx
Highly, highly second the Internet Archive (and the Open Library) rec
I love this title! Please never change your humor /gen
I friggin LOVE Libby, it’s a beautiful sight to see other people jump on this wave.
I love going book shopping in charity shops! One of my favourite things to do on a Saturday afternoon.
it's okay fantasy readers, let's have a collective hug and cry together
I highly recommend Better World Books. They have amazing prices in used books and free shipping if you buy $15 of books. Otherwise shipping is a flat rate of $1. And they donate books to kids in need all over the world. I’ve really got some great deals from them lately!
i just googled and there's actually an oxfam bookshop half an hour from my apartment. Definitely checking that out soon!
z-library is completely free and has basically every book
@Santosh Parvatikar z-lib.org is an e-book site. not sure about legality. tho if you're in india, it's not illegal if you don't share the material.
Book Depository is also owned by Amazon, just FYI
My country does an yearly book fair for 3 days. It's the only thing I wait for every year. Although it's very crowded (I live in India!) but i love roaming through the stalls and talking to strangers about books. Also there are barely any good libraries around my house and I live in the capital! For this reason only I am really eager to go to college because most of the colleges have amazing libraries (as I have heard).
I also recommend Project Gutenberg! All the books on PG are public domain, too--like Librivox. :)
Some libraries also take requests. mine has a page on the website where you can request movies, books, video games! They approve almost anything
So thankful that my library has good books (and movies!)
Love from New Zealand
I NEEDED THIS THANK YOU
It's a shame I don't have any libraries nearby my place, but atleast this video has enlightened me on the alternatives😭
(also, EARLYYY YAYYYYYY)
The Girls is such an underrated book but it's also my absolute favourite book!
