  • I'm flying the PW.MK1, the same aircraft as Crimson 1, to make sure he gets what he deserves. Upon completing the mission mercenary difficulty there's a bonus dialogue in the credits. I made a playlist of bonus videos about Project Wingman, it's here: • Project Wingman Bonus ...
    Project Wingman is a new indie arcade flight game coming over on Steam. Many will notice similarities between this and Ace Combat, but Project Wingman is its own IP and a new adventure awaits.

      Eh... No way to put it nicely, that is relative and all but nationalism is kind of a wrong way to put it. Belka itself was comprised of different States and even Southern Belka, now Northern Osea, was subordinated to Nord Belka, which is the last piece of Belka remaining after the war. Ustio and other nations were Belkan once but they wanted out after the Federal Law Review and Osean shenanigans, does that mean they were nationalists for Ustio or not nationalists for Belka? What about South Belka surrendering and being annexed by Osea? We don't learn enough about Belkan politics, only throwaway lines about the ruling party in 1995 being "far right". They were clearly jingoists and they wanted to reclaim resource rich land, but that isn't exclusive to nationalism.

      Because he's pathetic. At the start of the game he's considered the top Ace of the top military in the world. He's the leader of a skilled and respect squadron.
      But throughout the game you tear apart each of these aspects of his ego's foundation. You escape Crimson squadron in one mission, publicly humiliate them in the largest furball in history in another, and utterly wipe the squadron out in the last. Your squadron is key is wrecking the Federation, and embarrassing them so badly nominally allied nations like Sawaiiki don't even come to their defense. You damage the Federation so badly in fact they resort to causing a second Calamity, ruining their reputation for the sake of winning. And you know what? They still lose, agree to recognize the self-actualization of the Cascadian people, and agree to a cease-fire after a near-complete routing of their forces on that side of the planet.
      And yet, Crimson's ego and self-image never accepted the changing reality. Instead his mind invented some insane belief system wherein Monarch was the cause of all this suffering. That if you just didn't exist all those millions that died from Federation attacks and weapons would still be alive. And even after getting rid of all of Monarch's wingmen and allied forces and using a broken super-plane... he STILL couldn't win against someone he views a bloodthirsty dog.
      He's pathetic and it's only in those last moments, exhausted and ruined, that he finally accepted it.

      others are in it for cash, but won't want to throw their lives away
      Monarch however, after Federation blasts Prospero, speaks nothing when his wingmen want to flee. Well we see by then that he chose to stay. Perhaps its for the reward (mercanary path) , perhaps its to finish the contract (solider path) , perhaps its to stop Federation (knight path).
      What I will however suspect is that Monarch is closer to the knight path then expected. Throught the entire game, we rarely get to attack civilian targets, as a matter of fact, in multiple missions its clear that Monarch keeps collateral to the minimum (Pearl Harbour 2.0) fx

  • @jacobszymczak9323
    @jacobszymczak9323 Před 3 lety +387

    The ending is a tale of what happens when someone, anyone, or any nation goes too far and doesn't back down. Cascadia initially just wanted independence and the Federation wanted them to remain part of their empire. However, both kept pushing and the federation became more and more desperate, with Cascadia getting bolder, attacking Federation assets in a "neutral" country among other things, so the Feds went too far and determined they cannot let Cascadia win, no matter what so caused the 2nd calamity, most likely by accident as they probably just wanted to flatten Prospero and the IF and either didn't know (or bother to find out) if using cordite primed weapons might cause issues outside of their own explosive force). Now that the Feds "upped the game" Cascadia is out for blood. Their country is wrecked and they've gone this far, theres no backing down now that they were almost destroyed for daring to want to be free. They completely destroy almost all of the Feds and you could tell they were probably giving no quarter in Presidia, "just count the number of Feds you've killed" and such. In comes Crimson who has lost everything due to the war and once again since there's no going back, his original home is destroyed by his precious Federation "for the goal of trying to reunite it" that he's completely lost it. In his head it wasn't the Federations fault because Cascadia "forced" them to do so because of how much they were being steamrolled, in a large part thanks to Sicario and Monarch. With everything gone to hell why not just finish the job, destroy the rest and have the Feds rebuilt it all "united" for the "good" of everyone. And of course, take down Monarch, who if he never got involved, the Rebellion would have failed amd none of this would've happened. After all, Crimson and the Feds never wanted to kill so many people and cause so much destruction, they were simply forced to because of Monarch. They arent in the wrong, why can't the world just see that?
    Its the result of people having "nothing to loose" because they lost it already in the pursuit of a goal, so the only thing left is achieving that goal, at any cost since they have nothing left to loose.

      Bullshite. Crimson just went mad and destroyed everything because he couldn't handle losing to a mercenary. Not even his own superiors stopped him from causing destruction with "Project Wingman". As soon as they caused Calamity the first time, the Peacekeepers took Presidia and took and turned its lands into an inferno, causing untold damages to even civilians caught in the crossfire of this man made cataclysmic change. People were already pissed off at The Federation's actions and then Crimson went and did said action that left Cascadia in ruins. What happens next is on their hands due to what Crimson did and they will pay the price. Even if the Federation knows they didn't destroy Cascadia, they failed to keep Crimson in check. In fact, at least one person on their side did not want to go to extreme with Cordium WMDs, but was killed by a peacekeeper because the latter was desperate in not losing the war. And that's what caused it. And look what that desperation has brought them after the war. A new conflict.

      It is. The railguns we're used to seeing? The ones that make up Stonehenge and the CFA-44 and SP weapons in AC7? You just see those as ripples in the air from the disturbance of how fast the projectile is moving. But when the railguns in PW fire, you see a characteristic orange beam that hangs long after the gun finishes firing and busies up your radar something fierce. That's because it isn't pure electromagnetic acceleration, it's cordium powered. That also explains why railguns are so ubiquitous in the setting. Cascadia is so rich with cordium that the Federation military thinks nothing of using it to power mass produced weapons. I'm willing to bet you wouldn't see so many railguns out in the Periphery.

    I still don't understand why so many people feel 'conflicted' regarding the ending of the game. Crimson 1 is projecting his delusions onto you hardcore, and is a monster than manages to make Pixy's motivations look fully reasonable, rather than just understandable.
    Crimson 1's entire schtick, is:
    'REEE I LOST! NOBODY WINS, IT"S ALL YOUR FAULT! REEEE'
    The game ends with a senseless tragedy driven by one man's ego and messiah complex. If you feel like it's even remotely Monarch's fault, then you weren't paying attention throughout the story. Comic and Diplomat are both Cascadian, and Sicario fights for Cascadia, representing the desires of it's people. The remnants of the military of cascadian independence forces go out of their way to get Sicario to keep fighting for them.

    • @taufiqutomo
      @taufiqutomo Před 3 lety +14

      The conflict comes because we are accustomed to Ace Combat.
      In Ace Combat, no matter how bad the situation is, you always save the day at the end of the game.
      You prevent the V2 from destroying anything approaching war crime levels.
      You destroyed Fortress Intolerance.
      You decommission Stonehenge while giving it exactly one chance at redemption 15 years later.
      You disabled Megalith.
      You saved Oured.
      You liberated Gracemeria, and prevent it from being rendered extinct by Chandelier.
      You stop the drones from starting a Skynet scenario.
      But not here.
      You killed Crimson 1, but not before he destroyed anything worth saving around the airspace.
      Basically, you won, but at what cost? Is losing two major cities a cost worth paying? Is losing a million lives a cost worth paying?
      While I'd like to hear your answers to those questions, these are questions never asked in Ace Combat. We should have been asking questions about Torres's first railgun shell that might have detonated on Sapin. The Belkan nukes should not have taken only 12000 lives. We do not ask the questions of the Cinigrad meatgrinder that certainly happens when Wardog isn't around.
      Project Wingman forces you to face the question head-on, and answer them. And I like it precisely because of that.

    • @jtnachos16
      @jtnachos16 Před 3 lety +8

      @@taufiqutomo No, I meant the people feeling 'conflicted' because they weren't sure of the moral situation.
      At what cost? Most of Cascadia. However, not the player's fault, nor even the federation's, at that point. I'd honestly view giving up at that point to be nothing more than an insult to the dead, letting their killer get what they want in the end.
      Is losing two major cities a cost worth paying?
      Without knowing actual numbers for civpop and such, that is impossible to answer. It was also far more than 'two major cities' given the tack on effects from the first city. Also, not a cost EITHER side expected to be paying.
      A million lives? Again, not an anticipated cost. Lives are heavy to be weighed, but not all lives weigh the same. Up until the missile barrage, we'd actively seen BOTH sides trying to minimize civilian casualties. Basically, from player perspective, all of the civilian deaths could and should be laid at the feet of Crimson 1. He's the one who lost his damn mind. The player's goal, was to force the federation to back down and allow Cascadia it's independence. We at no point see either side, outside of Crimson 1 and the Cruise missile barrage, actively seeking to target non-combatants.
      I'll also note that the extra dialogue during the credits on mercenary difficulty very much implies that a significant chunk of the air forces, at the very least, survived. If they survived, then it stands to reason that a chunk on the ground would have as well.
      As for Torres' first shell? You said it yourself, 'might have'. Beyond that, it's outside the scope of the game, or the characters involved, as far as giving a toss goes.
      Belkan nukes:
      We don't know what size/grade of warhead they were (I believe they were supposed to be V1s, which are canonically considered to be akin to tactical nukes, iirc. Tactical nukes tend to be smaller on the destruction scale), nor do we know how populated the areas they detonated them were. Only 12k isn't surprising if the areas they detonated were rural, even moreso if there was sufficient medical and rescue treatment in the days following. Using Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those being the only real-world examples, estimates for that sit at between 100k and 250k dead. Half of those were from complications in the aftermath and the failings of 1940s medicine. So, yes, if none of the bombs were dropped directly onto a densely populated city and mostly in undeveloped territory, then yes, 12k is reasonable, especially if both Osea/Ustio/Allies and Belka were prompt on trying to rescue people and get treatment applied.
      Also something that wasn't approved of by the majority of Belka, given that a ceasefire was quickly hashed out once everyone realized what had happened.
      Cinigrad: Happens entirely out of area of the characters in the game, with no real information beyond 'siege'. Casualties aren't necessarily high in a siege situation. It depends on how the siege is being run.
      At any rate, PW ends on a sour and very rushed feeling note. It comes across as an abrupt and not well-thought out twist. There is no real lead-up, no real reason to anticipate something going wrong again at that point. It feels like a twist for the sake of itself, ending on a very abrupt note with no real closure or plot resolution.

      That's not 'misguided' or 'optimistic', that's traumatized veteran PTSDing his way to a 'solution' to war, by removing the governments that have failed him so, and that as a result, he sees as the source of the issue.
      The difference between him and Crimson 1, the reason I even brought up Pixy, is that Pixy got actual character development and had legitimately gone through horrible crap and had his faith in the system shaken. He also never denies being in the wrong. He instead feels it to be a NECESSARY EVIL, and freely admits himself to be the bad guy. He's hoping his extreme measure works, even if he is seen as evil in the aftermath.
      Crimson 1 wasn't being idealistic, or even really traumatized. He was upset that he had lost, took his teammates getting shot down VERY personally, and projected all blame for the situation HE CAUSED onto Monarch, in order to try to justify his actions and make himself look the good guy.
      Crimson 1 comes across as a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum because things didn't go his way, while refusing to acknowledge his own faults, while Pixy comes across as a jaded, disillusioned soldier doing something he legitimately feels is the right thing to do, wrong though he may be, and is upfront in accepting and acknowledging the consequences of his actions.

Also, turns out above 9 or 10 km you loose most of your engine power. Learned that the hard way, 1100 km/h (at full throttle) is waay too low to safely evade on mercenary.

    You know, the plot wasn't the greatest or deep by any stretch of the imagination. But I still sat back during the credits wondering if everyone was okay just before they come on comms also trying to figure out the aftermath in the end after the world literally opened up and Crimson's hell swallowed it, a new world being remade. Flying with them in every mission, it wasn't the deepest as far as going into each of the pilot's stories, but they had that small charm to them and that they all had a common goal I could get behind. Flying for either freedom, glory or just blood money. It was definitely cool experience. They weren't the best written as far as character development goes but I chuckled at the funny moments and my heart was racing in the tense battles.
    Ps, please make a 2 seater prototype so I can vibe with wso Prez in conquest because you best believe I'm coming to collect. For Hitman team, for Sicario.
    Pss for those having a hard time on mercenary difficulty, just grab the last prototype and you'll breeze through it although you do feel kind of slimmy for doing it lol.

    Just beat this tonight and I though dip was being overdramatic in the previous bossfight with crimson, but no I was really feeling the fury with kings. It's rare that my home, that the pacific northwest is talked about in media, especially local politics. Cascadia is a real movement, and the story hits reasonably close to home. Crimson's fear that Cascadia wouldn't be able to defend itself and be subject to a worse global fate is a real argument, but resorting to nuking our home to prove to the federation that we need to lick their boot to survive is something else.
    I'm not stating my irl political thoughts in this comment but just explaning how this game hit oddly close to home for some of us. Hopefully gives others some context. We live with dangerous faults lines too, Cali earthquakes are some of the worst, and we are proud of the west coast as it's residents just like the Cascadians in the game. Strange reflection of real life US politics in a pew pew plane game I was not expecting.
