    As a young revert I came back to Catholicism due to its profound intellectual tradition, its uncompromising values (rooted in the teaching of Christ), and its sheer beauty. None of these three values (representing the true, the good, and the beautiful respectively) are to be found in this latest synodal document. It is void of any intellectual insight, it seems to compromise on Catholic values, and its art is horrendously ugly. But don't lose heart friends. The Church will come back stronger than ever before. Hard times mold great saints. This is the generation that longs to see the face of the God of Jacob.

I'd guess that 10% expressed sadness at Pell's death and the hope for his salvation, but the bulk were hostile to him and even gloating about his death. The secular culture in Australia is not just agnostic, it is bitterly hostile to religion and the religious. It is not a pleasant place in this regard.

    As a non catholic with a deep interest in the direction that the Catholic church seems to be taking, I fully appreciate the delicate nature of your comments, and the need to be both true to the faith and to church unity. Just remember that closing your eyes and literally denying what seems obvious to everyone around you is not helpful in any case. Projecting that to be a good catholic is to essentially be a blind follower will not help attract others to the faith. Being a person of faith should not require checking in one's brain at the door

      @@tomthx5804 I just perceive how difficult it is for Matt to direct any kind of criticism toward the Church's leadership, but in my opinion, if he is to preserve his intellectually integrity, he has no choice but to voice those concerns. Now, I know it's hard to do so. I mean, nobody wants to be perceived as heretic or a divisive person; but remaining silent in the face of the current confusion coming out of Rome is not the answer, less you be regarded as being intellectually dishonest. I for one, could never convert to Catholicism if I thought that it meant shutting down my brain and following anything coming out of Rome, even if it went completely against the very foundations upon which the very faith was built. As a non-Catholic, I would perceive that as too much like what Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons do. Anyhow, I just appreciate Cardinal Pell's article and Matt's discussion of it. I echo the experience of KateE. Wasted my time attending the "listening sessions" in my parish, because like KatyE many of the points expressed by myself and other attendees, were never expressed in the written document published. In simple terms our views were neither listened to, or heard - and were not included in the final document. In 2014, I wrote to the Archbishop of my diocese. I asked him to consider allowing the concelebration of the Tridentine Mass once per week. On Sunday. In fairness to him, he did write back to me saying that he could not authorise the Tridentine Mass being concelebrated. I didn't get into "letter tennis" exchange as to why he would not allow the Tridentine Rite to be concelebrated.

      Sorry, but this is an utterly superficial view: "the Aussie nation" does not have a single voice and our distrust of heroes runs deep.
      Cardinal Pell was Bishop at a time when the accumulated sins and shortfalls we can perhaps associate with Irish Catholicism came home to roost: as St Mary MacKillop's order's early defenses of abused children shows, this was a long time coming in Australia. No older member of the hierarchy could expect to be treated without suspicion by the wider Church they serve; but the wider Church's response needs to help root out the evil, to aid the victims, and to encourage our good religious and clerics where they are wrongly persecuted or ostracized.
      Cardinal Pell was in some ways a terrible communicator, in the sense of winning people over; and his professed disinterest in the Risdale case was bizarre and repellent even to people of good will, to the extent that a succession of juries and judges and royal commissioners found that the ludicrous and ever-shifting testimony against him had more credibility than his own.
      For the child-molesting conviction, our prayers were answered when the High Court finally decided that a rational jury could not, on the evidence, find him guilty beyond reasonable doubt: thank God. And I thought Pell handled himself really well afterwards: his style of communication seemed to have changed to be more generous and conciliatory, dry rather than just desiccated, as his prison diaries and gracious commentary in the ETWN interview from St Peter's Square last week showed.
      Pope Francis showed wisdom to bring him to Rome, where his non-pastoral talents both practical and theological were assets.

    My priest was invited to participate in the synod, and he commented on how condescending the material was. It was drawn in crayon. Like for children. Then they talk about "expanding the tent" to the elderly. The elderly are the majority of parishioners of most churches these days, like where does that come from? Then it slips into all the various "marginalized" groups.
    My priest simply responded, "If a transgender person who's gone through with the surgery wanted to come and pray with us, we would accept them with absolutely open arms. If my flock did any less for them than they would any other new parishioner I'd immediately and harshly deal with the uncharitable. But we wouldn't fuel their delusion if they still held on to it. This has always been the spirit of the Church. We're called to tell the Pharisees to put down their stones, but then immediately turn around and tell the sinner to sin no more."

      @derechoplano Před rokem

      Your priest speaks the Christian message. It is not that hard. Loving the sinner does not mean accept the sin (or accept a delusion) but saying the sinner to repent. This is an act of love. Loving a drug addict does not mean accepting that he keeps on taking drugs and destroying himself. It is an act of love telling him that he has to stop. Our current authorities use the excuse of acceptance and loving the sinner to blur the difference between sins and good behavior, because they don't believe that sexual sins are sins and want them abolished.

    Thank God for Cardinal George Pell’s words. May he rest in peace. I am a new Catholic who came to the faith through Mother Angelica. She taught me that being a Catholic is about more than merely being a good person. I then read, St. Padre Pio’s and St. Faustina’s teachings, which I learned a great deal from. In addition, I was truly blessed to become a member of a church that was run by Dominican priests for over 130 years. They introduced me to the Latin mass which I loved. They gave me so much support and spiritual direction and offered so many study groups to learn more about our faith. (This was something I was unable to find in other Catholic Churches)
    I have been completely lost over the past two years with the current teachings which seem to be in opposition with what I have learned from Mother Angelica, St. Padre Pio, and St. Faustina.
    With Pope Francis, I have found additional confusion as to what our faith is or is not due to some of his actions. And also, confusion due to his not elaborating or speaking to some of the actions by those who hold positions in the Catholic Church which behave contrary to our teachings.
    Lastly, under the planning set forth from the synod, the Bishop in our state using the plans developed through the synod as a reason, removed the Dominican priests from the church they had cared for for over 130 years. I and many members of this church were in shock and saddened by such a decision. It just felt as if a beautiful piece of history, of traditional ways, was just destroyed.
    So for us who are “mad trads” at least in my case, it is frustration over not understanding what I am supposed to be following as a Catholic. I have been trying to learn and understand The Bible and the catechism. I have been trying to come to terms with how difficult some of the changes will be which are necessary to grow closer to God. But over the past 3 years it’s as if much of what I learned is no longer required. I just feel overwhelmed and lost! Do I listen to those I have been learning from such as, Mother Angelica, St. Padre Pio, Mother Miriam and Father Goring as to what is required and acceptable or do I now follow along with various, priests, bishops and cardinals who have a more “lax approach”. I don’t know enough about my faith to feel secure in making a decision so I get frustrated. I don’t understand what is so wrong about the traditional ways of the church. But I could be wrong.
    Thank you for having this discussion because I was thinking there was something wrong with me for having theses struggles.
    I pray for you, Matt Fradd, the members of your show, the Pints with Aquinas community, the priests, bishops,cardinals, the magisterium and the Pope that we can all be guided together with a better understanding of Gods will and a stronger relationship with him. God Bless!

    I was asked to participate in the synod for our Diocese, which had a good and holy orthodox Bishop (since retired). The questions given to us from the Vatican had a clear slant and agenda. We expanded the questions and answered beyond what was asked in order to give Faithful responses. A few months back, Catholic Answers published a survey on behalf of Pope Francis solicitating "feedback" for the Synod. I completed that survey. It was a list of multiple choice questions wherein every single possible response lent to modernist views - pushing support for sins against the 6th and 9th commandments. You had to choose to support sin a whole lot or just a little. Pope Francis and his synod committee are not seeking truth or feedback from the laity. They are seeking a way to justify promoting sins against God. The approach itself is an attempt to thwart the authority of God and make of ourselves gods.

    Thank you so much for this presentation and the link to the text. As an American Catholic I would like to say that the $4 billion in sex scandal costs here in US is never addressed from the LGBTQ side. Any suggestion they take responsibility for abuse is immediately labeled homophobic hate speech. The sociological research by Rev. Paul D. Sullins, PhD, ought to be used to challenge the claim that the homosexual lifestyle is a scientifically determined phenomenon and always innocent or normal. In addition the medical disciplines of reproductive endocrinology and pediatrics should not be impeded by laws which prohibit free speech and research challenges to the current transgender products and services. This derives from globalists who seek world depopulation by any means, and the greed of pharmas. Do not think they care about gay people, transgenders or anyone else. It is a ruthless, sociopathic agenda. I pray Pope Francis knows this and is playing along looking for an opportunity to expose them and teach them.

      @rickjelliffe1580 Před rokem

      You do realize that girls were abused too? And (more rarely) boys by nuns?
      Under your logic, our "hetero" side should "address" that, yes? It is as much a non-sequitur as blaming child abuse on just clerical and religious celibacy. As with any kind of rape, there is some kind of sicko power dynamic at play: the desire to dominate sexually rather than mere sexual attraction.
      This kind of us-versus-them mentality is entirely wrong-headed, and something that has particularly affected Americans and, I sincerely believe, requires widespread repentence: the real "us" is the wide church, the real "them" is the perpetrators and their (knowing and unknowing) enablers; blaming external boogie men is a sure way to delay us getting our Catholic house in order.
      An even greater leading light in Australia on child sexual abuse and the Church's response is Parramatta's Bishop Vincent Long. We should not be distracted by righteous indignation about Cardinal Pell's persecution and miss the greater wisdom of Bishop Long, in this regard. See catholicleader.com.au/news/australia/bishop-vincent-long-tells-royal-commission-he-was-abused/
      Bishop Long once said something like this: we first treated it as a few bad apples, then we treated it as a few bad Bishop/administrators, but we needed to realize it was a bad culture! Something that we all may need to own up to being influenced by and to root out from our attitudes. (Now Bishop Long is hardly anti-Catholic or anti-clerical or anti-Pell: indeed he was ordained as a priest by then Bishop Pell and as a Bishop by Archbishop Cardinal Pell, who presumably selected him.)

    As a recent convert, as with many converts, I wasn't drawn by the 60s singing, or the jokes or the celebration. I was drawn by the truth. I was drawn by the truth of Abortion, by the truths of the general Philosophical ideas, the truth of how we view men and women, the truth on Homosexuality (though it took me a time to fully grasp it, thanks be to God through the works of Saint Thomas Aquinas), the truth on what the church fully teaches. And now, I find myself bursting at the seems wanting to share it with my Brothers and Sisters in God & Adam, wanting to explain the natural methods of coming to God, to coming to the wisdom of the Church (my girlfriend hates it sometimes). Its disheartening that rather than embracing the truth of God in full Godhead, not just the supposed "guidance of the Holy Spirit" (definitely a different kind of spirit guiding some on this), it throws it in the trash.
    The Latin Mass is BANNED in my Australian Diocese, and its disheartening that the only way I can get to it is through Private Masses said in a Basement. I want to experience the most reverent way to honour God. Heck, I don't even care if it was necessarily Traditional, just REVERENCE: little to no Incense (they use these short lasting incense), no Ad Orientum (as you said yourself, Matt, it feels like I'm being entertained rather than taking part), no quiet moments of Prayer that's CONSISTANT. Just a random period at the end after Communion FOR NO DEFINED TIME; I can't say any organised devotion, or even just a off the cuff prayer if I'm taking communion last, which as one who takes by the Tongue, is done out of courtesy for others. The readers are often women (which no offense, its just not true to form), whom just read the text. Not even some of the most devout women I meet compare to the regular men who read, its just something in the tone that just makes your ears perk up that little more. I've had chats with Priest: he wants to do these things. He wants Ad Orientum, he wants incense, he wants Latin, he wants the Last Gospel & chants, and he (Thanks be to God) puts little bits he can. But its like swan amongst ducks, it just feels off and since most people aren't ready, it gets received poorly.
    I pray for Pope Francis, a Priest I know, which I won't speak anything negative about to not spread scandal, and am starting to Pray for my Bishop. Its disheartening and fills me with sorrow for Our Church. I have hope that that resurrection will come after this Crucifixion, but it still breaks my heart, even as one of God's youngest sons.

    Thank you for doing a video on this topic! I can understand your position and wanting to be careful to avoid falling too far on one side. I grew up going to an N.O. Catholic Church and thank the lord have found the beauty and truth in TLM.
    You are correct in pointing out those people, who see church leaders rejecting catholic teachings, and are searching for clarification and truth. It is crucially important to be able to speak about the failings of Church leaders boldly, so the laypeople are not mislead. I understand not wanting to fall into a conspiracy rabbit hole, but we cannot put blinders on to reality. It is necessary to point out the devastating sinful society because it is not just in the secular world, but also rampant in many church leaders. The Pope and many bishops and cardinals have continued to publicly contradict Church teachings. Laypeople are entrusted into their leadership…. If our leaders are doing a bad job, we must point that out.
    So, please do try to choose your topics and words with careful discernment, but I also pray that you can be confident in pointing out the failings of our leaders and discuss it boldly without fear. Teetering the fence is not a great place to be. When in doubt, I’d rather be rejected by some for being unapologetically Catholic than accepted by others for being complacent amid the abuse of the Catholic Church at large.
