There's a film called Control (2007) about the life of Ian Curtis (the vocalist) if you are interested.. You'll find all the context you need to know about the band
The backstory of their only having two albums is because the lead singer/lyricist/songwriter Ian Curtis committed suicide after their second album. RIP. The remaining members of the band formed into New Order after that.
Oh dang....I had no idea. That puts a lot of the negativity of these songs into perspective but makes them even more tragic.

Depression is THE thing with Ian Curtis and Joy Division! And: the first Moog came in 1964, ten years later Jean-Michel Jarre made synths mainstream, five years before "Unknown Pleasures".
Try listening to "New dawn fades". It's one of the best songs I ever heard. These guys did not make one bad song. It's one of those rare bands. They also pioneered the post punk / new wave movement.
A lot of famous musicians have a lot of good things to say about them.
Edit: At first they went by the name Warsaw, but then later changed it to Joy Division, which has a very dark historical meaning. (too dark to write about it here on YT)
one of my fav songs ever just based on its atmosphere and its melody. It makes me feel like I'm in a dark place with thick fog surrounding me at all times. I'm not a complete expert of the history of Ian Curtis (the vocalist) but from what I remember, he was battling with depression at the time and tragically committed suicide in between the release of their 2 albums. The band then broke up and formed a new group called New Order where they explored new sounds of Synth Pop.

I definitely listen to New Order much more than Joy Division, but JD was still such an incredible band. I won't call them influential and groundbreaking, although they were obviously all of those things.
What i find most incredible about JD is that the music, and Ian's voice, makes me feel basically the same way as when I first heard them in 1990: slightly uncomfortable. It is uncompromising, clausterphobic, thought-provoking work. The music and lyricst foreshadow the tragedy that was Ian's life.
I have never worshipped Ian in the way that many rock stars gone too soon have been- I simply wish he had survived himself.
If anything, I think what sticks out the most in JD is the power of it's raw humanity. Strange that in such cold, unwelcoming music, that remains my biggest impression.
Managed to catch them live in Manchester in the late 70s, Post industrial punk at its best
Even with all the DSBM, dark ambient, power electronics, doom metal etc. that I listen to, I can hardly ever bear listening to Joy Division, I can't think of a darker and more depressing band.

Am I the only one who can't stand this band or Ian Curtis's vocals? This song just reinforces how dull I think it all is. Fight me below 😊
This album is frontloaded. I really enjoy the earlier songs on this album and there the vocals aren't a problem or even add to the atmosphere of it, but near the end it falls off and the songwriting becomes much less interesting for me.
definitely not for everyone but you may still like Love Will Tear Us Apart by them
A lot of people don't enjoy it - I hated Love Will Tear Us Apart for the longest time until it clicked. Definitely not for everyone but they are so emotive and have so much soul. Plus their bass player Peter Hook is an absolute riff machine
