Ah,my first game. I started on a single county island. 30 glorious years of peacefully raising a family, marrying them off and not putting my counsel to work. This ended when a holy war was called on me.

I united half of India through diplomacy and skullduggery, didn’t understand much about holding the legal right to lands, had 17 kids, lived 50 years, lost my son Sura to illness, lost my spymaster wife, then finally had a seizure and died. Probably bumped my head or something, or more likely, I just couldn't bear the grief anymore. Losing little Sura hurt, man. And then suddenly 95% my land was gone to the MANY legal claimants and the new maharaj of Lanka was spit outta luck. Great game. I'll remember you, Sura.

10:15 If you win a war by sieging down every county of your enemy, make sure to ransom all your hostages before you demand their surrender. You can safely ransom heirs and even the war-leader and can still demand surrender, as you get +100% war-score if every county is besieged.

@@TheDirtyShaman i wouldn't say most, unless it's a small realm where you're fighting a count or something. Any hostages that provide war score get released on war's end. So, the only situation where most hostages would contribute to war score is when all the counties you siege belong to the top liege and all your prisoners are their family members.
I prefer to win though battles and sieging. You almost never need to siege an entire realm to win a war, unless, again, you're fighting a smaller realm anyway. I try to ransom "valuable" hostages as soon as I get them. The rest can wait until after the war is over.

54:16 You should only disinherit your children if your land gets split into multiple realms. I wanted to write that CK3 was my first paradox game which mechanics were natural for me. HOI4 is a game which I still don`t get at all. Moving army in CK3 is simpler, economy is simply gold and things that make gold and in CK3 tutorial actually helps.

@Paul Gauthier CK2 still has more content overall but unfortunately i have pretty much played everything there was to play in that game and done everything there was to do.
CK3 is not bad but i feel in many ways it was unnecessarily dumbed down and over-simplified, not to mention that it is missing big, essential content like nomads.
I do like some of the new features such as the on-map barony holdings, the new buildings system, the lifestyle perk trees, and most recently the new culture system.
I don't like the men at arms system at all compared to the old retinue system and i don't like the combat mechanics, and i don't like how the naval system works now.
There are many things i would prefer CK3 did more like CK2 but there are also things i am glad they added or improved on. I agree that it is more beginner friendly.

On the idea of starting a play through as Wessex, Alfred has the best stats worldwide in the 867 start, with mid to high twenties in each skill. He is next in line to his ducal liege who almost always dies during the Ragnar Lothbrok revenge war, so it’s very easy to inherit a large duchy that only needs a few more counties to form the English kingdom, all within the first few years of playing.
As if that wasn’t great enough, Alfred also starts young, so you have plenty of time to enjoy your highly-skilled ruler. It’s definitely possible to form Britannia before Alfred dies, giving you a great start on forming the North Sea Empire if you’d like.
Personally, the Alfred play through helped me learn how to manage my counts and dukes, how to divy out titles, and how to make sure I can remain an emperor while my children are kings of my sub-realms
Alfred is a great start for a starter player with a good grasp on game mechanics and who wants to experience a fruitful, challenging (yet not _too_ challenging) play through. If Ireland is the noob/tutorial island, then Alfred’s Britain is the step above.

Thank you very much, that offered great insights and I love the calm and jet fluid and "fuzzless" way you explain everything: it is just a pleasure to watch. I just boght CK3 and in my first run for the last I fear 24h ours or so I somehow was as lost as I always seem to be in Paradox games, yet I always get drawn into them for their realism and really do pity that and always end up with a similar bad experience no matter the actual game. What I took from your video is, that perhaps it isn't all my fault in gameplay (or patience :D ) but in scenario choice, because it seems to be that I try to play too specific, e.g. starting as a really small feudal duchy in Europe since this is my howntown. Most of the things you did I simply couldn't do. The tips menu was complaining all the time that I exceed my property limits and should install vassals since I also don't profit from cities and churches, but couldn't give them away for they would then split off my realm just as you explained. On the other hand I couldn't claim any new kingdom titles to prevent this, because the game said you can't create a title equal to your lords title.... I really was stuck with almost no money and more or less nothing to do except waiting for birth and death of heirs. But obviously there really can me more to the game :D
So I'll definitly will have a look now at more of your videos, perhaps I can even find a way to finally to make my home-duchy an Imperium :D :D :D ;)

31:32 Your tribal vassals contribution scale with your level of fame (which you can see by hovering over your prestige), up to 40% tax and a massive 75% of their levies. Their contribution will get cut in half if you do not hold the de-jure title directly above them.

    • @TheDirtyShaman
      @TheDirtyShaman Před 2 lety +2

@Paul Gauthier true, but since this was meant for new players I purposely used prestige instead of fame, as this video went into the respective currencies but not into their corresponding levels. If there was only a mention of fame, new players might struggle to find where they see their level of fame in the UI, thus the mention of prestige.

The most enjoyable part of CK3, in my opinion, is once you have a good grasp on the game's mechanics, you can play however you wish. You can set specific personal goals for each campaign. You can take the normal Paradox game route and just try and conquer as much as you can. You can choose to keep your realm small, playing tall to outcompete your larger neighbours. You can focus on expanding your dynasty, perhaps not ruling everything personally, but as a family.
My personal favourite way to play is by starting at the bottom of a vassal hierarchy within a large realm and eventually climbing my way to the top. I have to utilise many different game mechanics, forming a plan through many decades or even centuries, and that makes gaining that kingdom/empire title all the more satisfying.

This is actually my first go at a strategy game and I feel like CK3 is surprisingly accessible and intuitive for the most part. With the help of this introductory guide I actually managed to consolidate all of Ireland + take the Isle of Mann and a few Scottish territories while maintaining stability, prosperity, and advancing my culture (despite the occasional peasant revolt or Nordic raid). 👍
