I have always been fascinated by this culture. I was blessed to meet, and study with Shidoshi Stephen K Hayes. I proudly own three shinken, and two of the are tamahagane.

If memory serves, the samurai were symbolized ( ? ) by chrysanthemums. It makes sense. They are trained in ikebana as a kind of balance. I own a handmade ( as opposed to a 3D printed ) katana & I have only held it ONCE.

Chrysanthemums were used as a symbol of the Japanese Empire. The samurai used symbols called "Kamon". These were the symbols of the clans they belonged to. One of the most famous clans in history is Nobunaga Oda's clan. You might be confused with him because his symbol looks like a Japanese medlar flower. Each clan had its own symbol. You can search for Japanese clan symbols if you want.

@@fantomenal Thanks for the clarification. I'm studying this primarily because I'm doing a study of motifs, imagery, textures & a probably perpetual " grocery list " of things belonging to various cultures cross - culturally.
