      This week I went from an rx 570 4gb to an rx 6700 XT. I'd like to see the numbers from older series cards (500 series and 5000 and 6000 series) so that we can get an idea of the improvements. Lots of youtube bench mark videos are a couple of years old for the older cards so if they've even gained 5 to 15% uplift it might be enough to convince people to hold out a little while before they upgrade and get an overpriced current gen card.

      So I'd have suggested testing DotA2 to test the performance changes between those two drivers in a Source 2 based game rather than testing Source based CSGO vs Source 2 based Counterstrike 2 but I know that you'll already have all the testing scripts etc set up for CS which you won't have for DotA2 and that would take time 😊

    Imagine if AMD had today's driver performance at launch. Reviews and public perception would be A LOT better. AMD needs to make sure that their launch drivers are more performant to accurately showcase the performance of their hardware. These 20% to 40% performance uplifts are insane and would have blown Nvidia out of the water on day 1.

      Nah youre actually on the ball tbh. “Fine Wine” really just comes down to shitty drivers during the first year or two. To some degree any GPU will be faster over time with driver optimizations, but with AMD its expected and rephrased and framed in a positive perspective for them. For instance, Intel has SUPER fine wine GPU’s, performance has doubled, to an unmeasurable percent of what it was before. Why? Cause it launched borderline broken, and some games went from not working at over 100 fps since the launch of ARC. Imo fine wine is NOT a good thing. 10-12 percent of an increase in performance, yeah thats normal. 30-40 percent increase? Lol no. Something went wrong there starting from launch day. RDNA2 probably had one of the lowest amounts of “fine wine” because out the gate those cards were solid as hell and STILL great buys today. The technological mess that are RDNA3? You knew those cards shouldve been way faster, wattage to performance they didnt really make any improvements at launch while moving to 5nm from 7nm. That math wasnt mathing. There might even still be some potential left on the table.

    Im a person whos about to switch from nvidia to AMD. You've been a big help your videos are awesome. I also love how you include 1080p results as all the other youtubers keep shoving 1440p+ down our throats. Some of us do run high end cards on 1080p!! so thank you for that. Keep these videos coming!

    • @vigilant_1934
      @vigilant_1934 Před 14 dny +1

      It's not about shoving 1440p+ at you, it's about showing GPU intensive results for GPU reviews. 1080p is more of a CPU test because it requires a fast enough CPU to keep up with a good GPU at that easy to render resolution, though I've seen it used for GPU results occasionally (it's a lot of work testing multiple GPUs at 3 resolutions, not every reviewer has time to do that or even the hardware). Testing GPUs at 1080p these days is different kind of test since it doesn't show how fast a GPU really is since it's bottlenecked by the CPU most of the time and by the drivers in Nvidia's case. It's nice to see these results sometimes anyway but you should know by now why it's not something to be expected in a GPU review in 2024 as 1440p is getting easier to run by even some budget GPUs these days (the sub $200 RX6600 for example at medium settings) so starting at that resolution seems reasonable since it's when GPUs start to get challenged which is the whole point of the review. Specialized testing is fine and that's what Fabio is doing here so be aware of that.
      Years ago GPUs were tested at resolutions like 1366x768 and 1600x900 but it's way too easy to run those now and those monitors are hard to find. That was back when 1920x1200 was high end and you needed the fastest GPUs around to get 50-60fps. Gradually those resolutions became less common as we started getting more 16:9 720p and 1080p monitors, then eventually 1440p, and GPUs and CPUs got faster. 1440p was high end until 4K gaming became a thing and 1080p was the mainstream resolution. I wasn't a serious PC gamer at the time but I remember Sony marketing 4K in 2017 with the PS4 Pro and I eventually grabbed one in 2018 and a 50" Hisense 4K TV. I didn't even know what 1440p was until I got the console and found out some of the Pro enhanced games would run at 1440p or even 1800p (1440p TVs don't really exist, it's 1080p or straight to 4K). 4K at a consistent 60fps also became possible in 2018 with the 2080 Ti so 1080p was nothing for a GPU on that level. In the last few years 1440p monitors have gotten cheaper and cheaper to the point they sell more than 1080p now so it's officially mainstream and 1080p is now entry level.
      My monitor now, an MSI Quantum Dot 1440p 165 Hz nano-IPS, used to be premium when it released in 2020 for close to $600 but I was able to buy it new on sale from Amazon in 2023 for like $350. Cheap medium refresh 1440p gaming monitors can be found for under $200 now. I say medium refresh because high refresh is now like 240 Hz and faster. There's a 1440p 180 Hz MSI gaming monitor for $189 from Best Buy right now. You can even get a 4K work monitor for $230. Things have definitely changed in the last few years. I remember a basic 4K work monitor from LG was like $600.

    Thank you very much for the review. I believe that there are a lot of variables at play here, such as the game versions which most definitely got updated along the way, there are also Windows updates which should not impact the performance in a big way but it's still a variable. It would be nice to have a way of isolating the version of game/windows that was available at the time that 22.12.1 drivers were out and test with that specific version, so that we can isolate only the driver improvement.

    I... didn't expect above 15% increase in one year. That's surprising and very very disappointing in a way. Because yes, that seems to match much more to what they advertised in their first keynote on RDNA3. Almost even better.
    Now, evidently, I'm wondering if that's a specific of the RX 7900 XT or if the XTX gets the same benefit (or up to 5% less). That's very very intriguing.
    Good work, Fabio!
    Edit: as to your last point on focus for AMD: Yes, more money to FSR (needs to be equal or better than XeSS at least!), but selfishly, I'd want them to focus on VR performance. No one is tapping that market and since Apple has put their nose in, I'd expect some new cool software features too. (But yeah, I know not enough care about it. Let me cry in my corner, ok?!)

    Wont lie this is very impressive, and you know im an nvidia guy. Listen, i own a 4070 super and love it but i may go amd next time. Ive not been enjiying how nvidia handles aliasing and i dont like the stutters from this year and cpu utilization jumping like crazy due to drivers. Its as if nvidia has issues with windows 11 and nvidia cant figure it out with. drivers. Either way i feel amd this year is on track it just sucks so many turned there backs on them. Nvidia covers to much of the market and thats not good for competition. It means nvidia will now cut corners and release things on a lesser level then they should because well they jsut dont really have to try as hard as they can. Which imo is why so many are having great experiences with amd right now because amd is trying so hard. I love that and I may just go onto supporting them next.
    Listen i would love to go from a 4070 super to a 7900xt especially after seeing this and im a 1440p gamer so this card would fit me perfectly.
    The starfield game alone shocks me so so much. It legit now performs like a 4080 super in that game now. Just proved to me amd will always get your card working so if you have issues at launch just know they willl fix it.

The perfect and correct way to test the evolution was to test with the first driver that AMD releases to support specific games (for ex Starfield i think i was 23.8.2) and compare with the most recent. I know, this would be a major headache to test!! Keep up with the good work!
