I hope that you're doing well and staying safe. Here is Switzerland 1 aka my £100 weekend in Switzerland. I was really happy to be able to do my first proper travelling in so long: bringing you a Switzerland on a budget travel film. I took full advantage of living in Konstanz and had a weekend travelling along the route of the famous Glacier Express without breaking the bank.
You can donate to the German flood relief effort here: www.drk.de/en/ I donated €50 and was hoping that if everyone who can donate 5 bucks does so, then all together we could be supporting the relief effort with a total of €100, which will go a long way for a flood survivor. You can donate at the link above with PayPal in USD or GBP or whatever currency :) there are also other organisations helping that you can support, e.g. www.aktion-deutschland-hilft....
(ah shame I didn't sync the final audio right! thanks for understanding!)
In this video, I used an interrail pass and I would really recommend doing the same in certain countries (e.g. die Schweiz). I even had 2 days of pass left, which are to be used in an upcoming video (this is me officially announcing Switzerland 2!)

So what do you think of the Swiss scenery? It was pretty relaxing to spend all day watching it go by. Thanks so much to those of you who enjoyed the video, and to those who were able to donate to Germany's flood relief effort (www.drk.de/en/). The Italian translation is also a joke, I added it myself for a laugh :)

      Hi Tom
Thank you so much for a great video bringing back wonderful memories of a month long Xmas trip around Switzerland by train in 2007. My late husband was in a short remission from cancer and I am so grateful he got to see that stunning country.
We had a Swiss Pass and zipped about on trains so easily! Rather more rail options in Europe than here in NZ!!!
On a dreary day (like you had) in Interlaken we hopped on a train to Luzern just to fill an afternoon with sightseeing in comfort, bought a pot of yoghurt for the next days breakfast plus a hot takeout and took the next train back. Craziest grocery run we'd ever done... It was dark on the way back but we could see everyone's Xmas lights in the houses beside the rail tracks! Travelling by train in Dec-Jan in Switzerland is like travelling in a Xmas card.
I hope to return one day to see the scenery in summer.
Keep up the great work. I look forward to everything you post. Thank you.
      :-)

How weird to hear what other people say when they think you don't understand the language. Did you have an impulse to say "danke" to the one who said you were handsome?
And here we got the context of the time you met Kara and Nate, which now we find delayed your hike so that it wouldn't have been safe to go. But totally worth it, to have met them and have a picture! That mountain will always be there.

Through work, I had the opportunity to spend a fair amount of time in Zurich, Lucerne, and Zug, and loved every moment. I generally stayed in Lucerne, and on weekends rented a bike to ride around the lake, or took the water taxi to the funicular to Mount Pilatus for hiking, etc. I joined a Zurich hiking meetup group and did a couple of hikes (generally with other visitors). Zug is more of a business center, but I enjoyed hiking in the hills above the city, among the cattle. I found Lucerne to be very walkable and charming, and timed my visit such that I got to attend a concert there by Andreas Vollenweider.

I kind of like your idea of taking the local trains, as you showed that rather than just passing through, you can stop in the various cities along the rail and really see them, and get a feel for them. It is, to me, part of what I liked about Switzerland, how each city had its own unique "feel." I look forward to "Part 2."

Thanks for the video. It was interesting, if also a bit sad, as the weather didn't support your hiking wish. (You made the right call NOT to do the hike, BTW!)
When your main focus in life is money and how to save it, you WILL miss out on many spectacular things. Why not just save up your money for two more weeks and then do the trip AND enjoy the ammenities that are built and provided for maximizing your travel pleasure, and you can increase the experience?
The whole hyper-focus on money and doing everything on a ultra-tight budget is a very odd concept for some of us, but of course it's fine as well. I'd personally just save a bit more and thus do a few things less in life, but do those I choose properly, rather than only half-baked. I think it's more of a Swiss cultural aspect, not right or wrong issue.
But being able to take a cable car, rent a bike, go hiking, get a nice Swiss dinner, etc. when you only have two days in the country is much better (at least in my book). If you only get to Switzerland once in your life, do you really think in ten years you'll be proudest for the things you decided you DIDN'T want to do, just to maintain the tightest financial budget, or don't you think you'll probably remember the things you WANTED to do but didn't want to afford? Like I said, I'm not criticizing, just raising an alternative viewpoint.
    Good travels!

Interrail indeed is a very nice system! I believe there are even some extra advantages in Switzerland, discounts on some private train companies in the high mountains and also drive for free in Zürich on the S Bahn. Also some of the ferry's in the big lakes in Switzerland give a 50% discount on their fares, which can be nice (of course on official travel days of your pass). And in most youth hostels you also get a discount. Did that apply in the hotel you stayed in as well?

That’s a great idea! I had seen the BW ticket and thought I would do something in Schwarzwald in autumn. I hadn’t heard of the other ticket so thanks a lot for mentioning it 😊😊 Really glad that you enjoyed the video!

@@thornton The trick with the additional person is actually quite need. Other people ( subscribers?) can ride with you a portion if the journey and you can listen to their story. I was curious and just looked it up, you could theoretically travel from Konstanz to Kiel for just 42€ ( switching 8 times to get some excitement;) ) Or you play it save and just go to Hamburg instead and I will give you a tour through the city 🤓

Next time take Huel Black with you. Cheap and completely nutritionally balanced. Also, it's vegan. Just eating bread and dried fruit isn't good for you. Inspiring videos btw. I think I may travel across France, Germany and down to Italy next spring 🤗😍

Love your videos, but one small request are you able to add subtitles that you click on/off the CC button at the bottom of the video. would really make a big difference for us , thank you

Hi Dean, thanks for bringing this up. I appreciate this concern and will definitely look in to it. Can I ask, do I need to also do the parts where I have baked in subtitles? Or will also doing those parts make it a mess for you?

@@thornton Hello Tom. I have seen on other videos we watch where the subtitles move up not to block whats been added at the bottom and move back down after its gone.so might do the same when you add your subtitles, my partner sometimes finds it hard to hear every word on a video so being able to turn on the subtitles really helps to keep up with every word. its great that you already think about this when the back ground noise gets loud.

Glad the floods did not reach you. 2,000 m you can get acute altitude sickness. Some people, like me, get swollen fingers and a stuffy head well under 2,000.

    Hey Tom,
I saw in one of your earlier videos you said you were a software developer. Do you ever try to work while on the road for long stretches of time. I'm in the same boat and couldn't imagine myself taking off a ton of time from work. If you do work on the road, how do you manage it? Do you find internet in random cafes?

Switzerland is beautiful, but I would want to experience the food and culture and won't do a budget/cheap trip to such a beautiful country.

No, solo travel and one of those flexible tripods. When they are traveling together, they might film each other.
