This is where I was all autumn, working hard to bring you this! The northern lights is on everybody's bucket list, and I didn't want to just fly somewhere for a few days and be disappointed if I didn't see them, so I took matters in to my own hands and took a really slow journey through Norway from Hamburg to Aalborg to Oslo to Bergen to Lofoten / Svolvaer, to Tromsø. Travelling all through the Norwegian Fjords to up beyond the Arctic Circle.
Oslo to Bergen, one of the world's most beautiful train rides.
Bergen to Lofoten Islands on a once-in-a-lifetime fjords cruise.
And a wrap-up of my few weeks in the arctic circle in Tromso, Norway.

Here is what’s special about your travel videos for me-it’s not flashy. You’re not “showing off” your travel. It’s not “noisy”. There’s no brand/service you’re trying to sell. You’re not exerting that “CZcams personality energy”…you get the point haha.
What it is: a person who simply loves and enjoys seeing the world, sharing that journey with others, and (along the way) inspiring some to do the same. It’s real-sharing the good and the bad. I hope you get more views and subscribers but at the same time I hope your authenticity doesn’t change. Because this is the kind of travel content more people in our world should see. :)
I’ve always wanted to travel solo and now, I have a solo-trip in Iceland planned in two months!!! Northern Lights viewing is part of the itinerary-your video just got me more excited for it.
Thank you for sharing! Will be looking forward for more to come!

I'm a quiet, love silence, gentle kind of person who also loves adventure and I used to love travel till something happened and suddenly travel was all about pushy tourists, adrenalin filled seekers, angst filled and ever tuned out of the present, business travelers, and families with kids. I used to fill my imagination with fantasies of travelling like the old authors did where they'd immerse themselves completely, on their own, in the world they were seeing and filled the pages with rich tapestries of the smells, sights, sounds and experiences they had and people they'd meet. Your videos are a tiny tiny spark of that fantasy in their quiet observation and enjoyment of the world. I've been drowned by the adrenaline, smiling face, filled CZcams travel videos always selling me the 'amazing shot, or amazing experience'. Enough already, show me the quiet beauty that emerges from stillness, from moments of idle boredom, from moments where I'm not chasing, ever hungry, ever desperate. Thanks so much for making these.

Very nice journey, and I really like your editing style. It's so nice to see someone shooting and editing in such a calm way. You really should have 37 million subs, not just 37 thousand subs.
2 years ago my wife and I made it not all the way up to Tromsø, but to Narvik. First from Buchholz in der Nordheide to Hamburg (it was the most exciting part of the journey since last time I tried to travel to Hamburg by train I got a 50 minute delay, and a 2 hour delay on my way back...), then from there to Rostock with the RB (9€ ticket for the win!), then by boat to Stockholm, after a short stay there we took the night train to Narvik, the SJ 94. Incredible journey, I highly recommend it. Even though 18 hours on a train can be a bit exhausting. Also we booked a compartment, not just a sleeper seat (which would have been way cheaper).
After hiking for a few days in the surrounding mountains and spending a weekend in a cabin on a camping ground (2 days of hiking without a clearly marked path, over mountains, through thick bushes and through moorland. We were absolutely knackered!) we then ended up in Narvik again and we got so, so lucky: We got to see northern lights, even though we were in a well lit city. Amazing experience. I can't even imagine what it must feel like if we ever get to experience this out in the wilderness.
Also, Narvik is well worth a visit as well, as you can get there quite easily, and it can function as your "main hub" for exploration. It's very well connected by bus routes all over northern Norway. Lofoten is a 5 hour bus ride away, Tromsø is 4 hours, I think. But the busses are pretty comfortable, and a car ride wouldn't be much shorter, and would cost way more. Plus, Narvik itself has everything you need. A few supermarkets, two malls, nice restaurants and cafés, a few bars and a few museums to top it all off. Plus an incredible view of the mountains and fjord.
Our journey back was... interesting as well. First, night train back to Stockholm, then another day spent here. Then back by train to Nyhavn, from there with a boat back to Rostock. The sea was quite rough and a few people couldn't hold their lunch. But I slept through most of it, luckily.
Then we booked a shuttle service from the harbor to the central station. The boat was running a bit late, so we were worried we would miss our train (I think it would have meant spending a few more hours before the next train). The shuttle service was running late as well, but apparently nobody wanted to get off at the first stop, so the driver drove at top speed to the central station, and we made it just in time. Booked our tickets, boarded the ICE, and it was all smooth until Hamburg, where we got delayed for unknown reasons (the announcement said something about "missing maps". What the...?) so we missed out connecting bus in Harburg. But oh well, got onto the next one where of course we could only pay in cash (this IS Germany after all), and also were running late for our next connecting bus, which would stop right in our home village.
But never despair, we got off in a neighboring village and walked for like 2km. It's not like we didn't have enough practice in Norway. ;)
EDIT: Oh man, I should have realised. Of course you are traveling with Hurtigruten. Did that with my wife in 2018. From Bergen to Kirkenes, and then with the car back to Oslo.
10/10 would do it again in a hearbeat. Only this time I would like to have more time on the way back, because 1 1/2 weeks isn't enough to explore the country.
When we were in Tromsø it was raining like it was for you in Bergen. Still we explored the city, saw like 10.000 hair salons and absolutely loved every bit of it.
EDIT again: When traveling back from Kirkenes to Oslo we also stopped on the Lofoten for 2 days. When we got back home, I learned that there were Northern Lights visible just the day after we left the peninsula. So unlucky... :(

Your videos remind of my mid 20’s when I used to travel a lot through Europe in budget as a student, hopping hostels, sleeping in long Eurolines and Flixbus night journeys. I also remember going up the cable car in Tromso at night to see the city lights, driving with my friend in the middle of cold Arctic night to chase northern lights. Arctic circle is an ethereal place where the sky always looks out of this world even without any northern lights. Your cruise journey in fjords reminds me of a similar journey between Finland and Sweden that I took in frigid cold north sea in the middle of peak winter. Solo trips like these gave me the peace and quiet to contemplate on life and appreciate the smaller things in this world. Your life changes when you settle down and have a family. But the memories of youth you will treasure forever. Thanks for a ride through the memory lane. Good luck on your next adventure.

I never leave comments on CZcams, but I hope you know how special your videos are! I've always dreamt of doing some sort of journey up through Scandinavia to see the Northern Lights but it always felt quite far-fetched and like something for the distant future - after seeing you do it, and do it alone, it has never felt so possible. Keep doing everything you are - the way you travel slowly by land/sea, put such thought into your trips, and have such an appreciation for the privilege it is to be in a position to travel at all is such an antidote to the way travel is commodified on social media. I imagine the channel comes with some level of pressure but take your time with it and know you're doing something good here! Happy New Year everyone 🦋

I had to smile when you said, wonderingly, "What is going on in my life?" We all wish we could answer that for ourselves these days! But in your case, the answer seems to be unparalleled scenic beauty. The more I see vicariously of Norway the more I think it is a uniquely beautiful country (with a touch of harshness to the beauty). I hope I can get there someday.
Edit: Just got to the end of the video. I think this is some of the finest work you have done, Tom, so do not be overly self-critical. The editing and the soundtrack just make this a joy to watch. The visuals are just stunning. And the mood is calm, uplifting and inspiring. That's your work at its best. Thanks for this. Assessing risk vs reward on the go IS what we learn from travel, adventure, ..everything! And it's (one of many reasons) why travel helps us grow and adds value to our lives.

I loved your video so much, except for hearing about your accidents! You're right that your body often conspires against you on holidays, I broke a tooth at the Hurtigruten breakfast buffet. If you ever go again and can choose the dinner option, they have a vegan menu on the ship that changes every night. So wonderful that you got to see the lights! Hope you've recovered well now.

I gave up on my CZcams Channel, because I never thought anyone would agree with my editing style or watch videos like the ones I made. It felt Pointless. I have dozens of video content but never came down to turning them into a film, but after going on a binge watch of your channel - I have to say It's brought back my desire for making films. Your videos are just filled with such small elements and nuances that can't help but make the viewer smile, as if they're going on a journey with you. It's truly a treat to come across your channel Tom, more power to you! And I hope you continue to make such wonderful videos and inspire others like me

Visited Tromsø last year, was the most beautiful place I could have ever imagined. I have never felt more at peace and at ease than I did in Tromsø. Even just watching videos of it or images of it my whole body like relaxes just thinking back to it. Truly a magical place.
