Unfortunately we have a new problem now! Buddy is 3.5 years old now. We have lived for a few months in a house where a girl with an aggressive pit bull has also lived. It has happened several times that the pit bull stands right outside the elevator door and as soon as the doors open he jumps at us and wants to bite. Both Buddy and I got really scared many times. One day we were going to pass a neighbor in the corridor (whom we have met several times before in the same place) and Buddy, all of a sudden, jumped at him and wanted to bite him. I was shocked because he has never done anything like that to either people or dogs. After a while we moved to another house where there were no such dogs but Buddy continued to react in the same way if someone is standing outside the elevator or is already in the elevator when we enter. After a few months he calmed down. Now we have moved again to Stockholm (big city with lots of cars, lots of noise, lots of people everywhere). The problem of people in front or in the elevator or in the corridor has returned. I try to refocus his attention with candy or with the ball before the doors open. The problem is that I never know if someone is going to enter the elevator or if there is someone outside the elevator. The other day he jumped and wanted to bite a neighbor he actually likes because the neighbor was standing in front of the elevator. We bought a muzzle but it feels so wrong because he is not, basically, an aggressive dog. He has always been very social and kind. He's just stressed and scared! What should I do? Please help us!

Can't go people that don't know how to control their dogs they get them but don't read up on the breeds that they won't and when they get them they let them away with murder .

Until for one month ago he has always been kind, calm, friendly, social dog. He wanted to greet everyone we meet. For one month ago, suddenly when we met a neighbor in the corridor, he jumped at him and wanted to bite him. I thought that, of some reason, he did not like the guy. Since then he has wanted to attack several neighbors and even bikes. When we are somewhere, in the town where there is much more people, he can react on that way only towards bikes. He just look at people but does not mind. What has happened to my dog? I walk with him a lot, play with ball both outside and at home. I am very worried. Please can you help us? Thank you! The chasing of bikes, kids on skateboards and anything that moves fast and suddenly is a trait of the breeds. They have a high prey and chase drive and in collies especially, the thing that doesn't stop moving can provoke them to lunge and nip so it sounds like yours is possibly being triggered into chasing especially if he's prone mostly to going after bikes. It's interesting that wherever there are lots of people, he doesn't bother about them but instead reacts to bikes. The bike stands out and in the same way collies are hard wired to spot the one sheep breaking away from the herd and force it back into the group; the sudden, fast moving and loud thing is often what triggers their response. Obviously impossible to give full advice cos each dog is different but redirecting and refocusing the attention quickly back to you with something like a tennis ball is a good start. If tennis balls are his thing at home, take it with on walks and when you see a bike approaching or he's up on his toes about something, bring out the tennis ball just to eyeball and redirect his attention. Would also advise you to read up on the breeds i.e. German shepherd and border collies and get more information on their traits and how best to train and manage behaviours that are specific to the breed.
