I'd never thought the intent was to rupture an eardrum. I always though it was a means to, hopefully, throw off the opponents equilibrium. (Balance.) Then probably run away or something. I would think rupturing the opponents eardrum would just be a bonus.
Pretty sure these guys didn't actually understand it's use. I'm no expert but all the points... Well, point towards it being used to temporarily incapacitate your opponent. Not to destroy their eardrums, sure if you manage to do that, I'm sure they won't be coming anywhere near you anymore but I doubt they'll be doing so anyway. Even though these guys might be experts, doesn't mean they can't be wrong.

Burstinf an ear drum doesnt knock someoen of their balance it hurts and can disorient a little but you have to damage the inner ear to do that
I've been ear clapped with one hand. Was sparring with my brother. He clapped me accidentally. It didn't knock me out but the impact felt like a gong going off in my head. I went straight down onto my knees. If it was real and somebody followed up You could be in real trouble. It's extremely debilitating... Also painful lol

My great uncle was taught it in the second world War. He stood in front of me and grabbed my neck and asked what would I do. I thought of a throat punch but said I'd go for the eyes. He then taught me the ear clap. Something I'd never even thought of. It stuns, deafens and neutralises the threat without being too destructive. You use it to get out of a situation, not to cause damage. Or to weaken the enemy so you can then get them overpowered while they're vulnerable. It must work if it was taught in the war. It doesn't seem like must but can be very powerful.

I've had this done to me, ear drums didn't rupture though. Ears rang for a long time, couldn't hear, and it put me on my knees. If you were being attacked it would definitely give you enough time to escape in most scenarios but it seems like to be able to do it consistently should be hard to do especially since there is no way to practice it on a person without causing harm.

It absolutly works its been done to me, thankfully it didnt rupture but it was done lightly, but it did mess me up for like a month. I think if it were done any harder it would've really screwed me up.

Thanks for saying this. In the video they're like, it works theoretically, we can think of actual examples of it working, but don't rely on it or even try it.

Instant bad tinnitus that lasted weeks and partial deafness. when I listen to music in the car, I have to keep the volume below 10 if I want it to sound normal, otherwise it sounds like papper or tin crinkling. It stopped producing wax for some reason as well and is itchy as fuk at least 3 days a week. I visited an ENT and he was an idiot with horrible reviews, told me my ear is fine, my family doctor said that my ear was so swollen inside that they couldn't see my ear drum but the ent said it looked normal.
Long story short, NEVER SLAP SOMEONE IN THE EAR.
It definitely works. I was taught this in northern. Kajukenbo/tum pai. I accidentally did it to myself jumping off cliffs into a river. I slipped on the wet rocks and when I hit the water, I hit it with my left ear flat on the water. Instant vertigo ! I could not tell which way was up when I was underwater. When I came up, I couldn’t even climb out of the water as my head was spinning for several minutes
I’ve been a mixed martial artist for about 9 months now and last Friday I had a match and I was slapped in the ear (luckily it was just before the round was about to end) so I had time to recover and I won with a rubber guard omoplata and after checking in with doc after the fight I noticed some hearing loss and my left ear is ruptured in 2 places. It’s very possible. As I’m writing this I still have loss of hearing in my left ear.

It's a technique taught to soldiers in the second world War. It must be effective if they taught it to every soldier. Its something you'd never think of doing, but once taught could save you one day. My great uncle taught me it to use in self defense. He was taught it in the Navy.

I hate this...It happened to me with a boxing glove while sparring one night, definitely wasn't pleasant and I was out of commission for a couple weeks as far as sparring .I don't see how it would kill anybody tho.
It works, I did it to myself once to find out and I lost my balance immediately. It wasn't very hard but if the opportunity presents itself in a fight, you may as well take advantage. Go with what you know when you need it.
The same as the two thumbs to the eye technique. It may give you a moment to transition to another. I literally was crushed by a bear hug under the arms by a person twice to 3 time my body weight. The double ear slap (or boxing the ears) work cause my arms were free and he let me go. I ran away as fast as I could. But...he let go. That is all I can attest too! Great vid!!
Way back when I was in a traditional Chinese martial art school, the teacher there said something interesting relating to this topic. He mentioned that there were many intentional obfuscation in traditional martial art designed to mislead the students and make them less effective until they proved their loyalty and get the correct version. One of the example he gave was the fabled ear drum strike. While the name of the technique specifically suggest the ear being the target, it's true intention was to strike the temple or the jaw joint.
This practice resulted in a lot of misinformation and ineffective techniques floating around from those who never received the correction and/or never figured it out.
Really interesting topic. On a similar line, some names of tecniques and tactic are pourpousefully designed so that nobody out of the system understand them, to keep secrets of the school. That used to happen in wing chun, still happens in some schools, and it happened in some japanese historical sword schools (we know because of some os the historical books talking about it). I guess these arent the only places where that happens, maybe was common practice.
Someone walked up behind me and did this to me when I wasn't paying attention (double) and I was in excruciating pain and completely disoriented. This is partly because I didn't see it coming....but my ears rang for a week. Was it a fight finisher or did my eardrums rupture....no. This would of caused me to lose the fight if they kept attacking. Would I try use it on some1 since I felt what it's like if I needed to? Doubtful. The precision to get it just right is too difficult on a moving target imo.
P.s. it was done by my friend who was drunk. After I recovered I got my payback but let's not go into that.

It has been two years since I have made this comment and only now have I realized people have asked about the payback. I suppose the time has come for me to reveal what occurred. The friend who did it was one of those people who can’t handle their alcohol and is of extremely small stature. This is why I didn’t just immediately proceed to kick their ass. After careful planning, I figured they deserved to have something that would cause them a good amount of pain, but also be embarrassing at the same time. I waited for this friend to pass out drunk at his place where he was roommates with another friend of mine and opted to squirt superglue on his eyebrows and pull down his hat on top of them. This was so his hat would be stuck to them when he woke up forcing him to rip it off and lose most of his eyebrows. After waiting for it to dry, I figured it would be best to let him wake up drunk so he would just pull it off immediately without thinking and giving me the pleasure of being able to watch him do it since I wouldn’t be present to watch this happen in the morning. I figured I should also wake him up in a painful manner. I grabbed a thick textbook (we were in college at the time) and overhead slammed it on his toes that were pointed at the ceiling, essentially giving him probably the worst stubbed toes of his life. He woke up immediately screaming and disoriented. He couldn’t see well because of the position of his hat and went to remove it , which obviously didn’t come off from the normal action of removing ones hat. So he just grabbed it and pulled it hard enough to rip not only his eyebrows off, but a lot of the skin as well. I don’t know if he was screaming at the stubbed toes or the eyebrows worse, but he definitely was hurting and looked like an idiot for a couple weeks while the hair and skin heeled on his brow. I felt pretty satisfied with the results and got a really good laugh with our other buddies. I hope this explains why I didn’t go into detail originally, but hope it was worth the wait.
I know it works because I experienced it a single ear clap not double. It honestly doesn't matter if to ruptures an ear it will give you an edge. My brother got mad when I called him weak and he slapped me and it landed right on the ear. Sounded like thunder, my ears ringed and my vision was blurry. It hurt so much I thought it had to be a punch. Its less of a physical assault and more like a sensory assault and I made me drop and cry.
A double ear box (slap) may not always rupture the ear drums, but it sure as hell can cause serious pain and disorientation; especially on a drunk attacker. It t can really mess them up due to their equilibrium being affected by the alcohol. Don't practice on friends though, as any ear damage can be long lasting or even permanent.

If I ever got close enough to use this technique it would definitely be to disorientate my opponent..whether it ruptures their eardrum or not...timing and opportunity is everything when fighting on the street in an uncontrolled atmosphere. Whatever maximizes your winning and survival potential USE IT!!

That's not really mythbusting. You didn't test anything.
And anyways, the fact that you know only a few cases of ear drum ruptures isn't a very good proof of anything since it's not a very used strike anyway.
Finally, rupturing the ear drum isn't necessarily the goal of the double ear slap. It can have a lot of effect even without rupturing : you create a ton of pressure inside the ear which is very painful and disorienting (and is an unusual feeling), you generally hit the knockout points around the ear with the bottom of your palm anyway and you rattle the inner ear which can fuck up the balance.
Overall it is an effective strike, even if it doesn't rupture the eardrums. Just ask your buddy to hit your ears hard if you don't believe me.

i earclapped my friends left ear when we were fighting for fun and ruptured his eardrum, felt extremely bad afterwards
Discovered this when my friend’s ex-girlfriend lost a card game to us. She slapped me not intending to get my ear, and even when I tried to dodge it, it fricken hurt like hell. Ear was ringing still a day later, had one hell of a headache. It wasn’t enough to take me down, but it’s a good tactic if you’re in a life threatening fight. Use it to help you escape. Keep striking until you can get away and slapping to their ears is a good spot to strike.
In the "Kill or get Killed" book, the technique was specifically to be used from behind when you sneak up on a sentry. You wouldn't use it in a face to face street fight because it occupies both your hands at the same time, and would be easily blocked and countered. Even in sneaking up on a sentry, the US Army during the Viet Nam era replaced it with the rear strangle takedown. Would the double slap work? In all my years of martial arts, I've never met anyone who's ever tried it, so I have no idea.
Slap 👋 with one open hand 🖐 to the ear 👂 focusing on power and accuracy will work better than the double if you have a chance to end the threat and prevent a fight or get away 🏃♂️

Never thought the goal was to full on rupture the ear (if it did, it was more of a bonus) but to disorient your opponent since a slight and sudden change of pressure (even if it's far from a perfect seal) can temporarily mess somebody up (be it physically or psychologically), specially if they don't have much fighting experience. Again, don't count on it being a fight finisher but it can create an opening to either run away and GTFO or follow up with something else.
the eardrum and the eye are the two areas with the greatest number of sensitive nerve-endings in the human body.
actually openhandedly hitting the ear is an excellent selfdefense technique. if you hit the ear the eardrum is probably gone and so is his balance (one is enougth) and additionally he's in excrutiating pain. i 've never heard of anybody continuing the fight after having his eardrum raptured. (you don't have to take my word for it rory miller and his crowd collected 103 incidents in which the slap to the ear was a fight stopper).
if you dont hit the ear but a bit in front or below or behind, its still a solid hit to the head that will have effect on your opponent.
the double slap is a bit silly but against an opponent whose arms are otherwise occupied it works like a charm.
you also don't have to hit very hard to have an effect which makes it ideal for womens selfdefense and other smaller people.
you don't see it a lot in mma because it's illegal in every system.
oh and by the way: ruptured eardrums happen all the time in boxing.

It'll work as a surprise first strike in a self defense situation, if you're sparring or already in a fight it might be a little harder to get the shot in, other things might be a better option
Double eardrum works even better when blocked... it's more a way to get both his hands in a position where one has trained the follow ups from. Good way to close a just to wide distance for a good sucker hook.
I honestly think an anatomy course would do many people good in understanding the weakness of the human body and how to take advantage of that for self defense can not only save your life but others as well
Maybe this ear clap technique was designed to distract the opponent for even just a split second to then get a few hits in especially if they didn't anticipate that attack.
It's actually called "boxing the ears" and you cup the hands to create a vacuum, but yeah, it can be really effective.
Homicide managed to injure Steve Corino's ear in a Ring of Honor match and Steve suffered permanent partial hearing loss. However, Steve says that even though it was made into an angle, the injury was a tragic fluke accident.
Everyone here because of films I feel like the Guinea pig because it just happened to me and it’s painful it was like when you have to plug your nose, push out. In this situation there is no air in there. It won’t come out. I’m going to the doctor today so I can figure out what is actually going on then I’ll respond to my comment.

Had the double earclap done to me once. My eardrums didn't explode. But I still was out of the fight, worse than any blow to the groin.

Robert. Someone did that to me. It’s a sick sick move. This was done from behind. It ruptured the eardrum. Luckily It didn’t affect my hearing. Did it have affect on my ears. Probably, such as some annoying ringing that I actually have not thought about for years and years. I had no idea at the time or until recently as a mature man that the ear drum is only a small part of your hearing even though it is important. It’s the nerves in your middle ear and inner ear cochlea and that which connects to your brain that gives you hearing. This will depend on how bad the slap was, it’s timing, your health, age and ability to heal. But it’s a sick sick move. I was very stupid. I should have worn a hat after that with ability to cover my ears. This I am going to do after years and years which I never had thought about or did not know what to do back then. Another thing is avoid fighting or annoying anyone at all costs, if you can. And wear a hat that covers your ears!
After years of experience, no fighting is the answer. It can be avoided 95 percent of the time. My kids will be taught this. This is because they can come back with a knife or a gun. You think your bull s martial arts boxing different styles is going to help. Fighting is for idiots! All someone has to do that hate you is to when your not looking knife you or shoot you. And wear a hat to keep your ears safe and warm. I feel very lucky it didn’t affect my hearing at all. Very lucky! And I cannot believe I wore no hat to cover my ears after that. I was so stupid! Fighting is for idiots.
As someone who's merely been slapped in the ear by accident, I'd say its a very effective tool for self defense for someone fighting up a few classes. Its no eye gouge but keep it in mind, ladied

Hi, twenty years ago I had my eardrum rupture punctured. By accident, during training. Didn't change my glasses to contact lenses. Training partner very lightly simulated an open hand punch to the face, I turned my head to protect glasses, he lightly punched my ear... and that was it. Lost hearing, a litte bit desoriented. Three monts out, laryngologist forbid me even try to hard sitting on WC :) But the immidiate effect wasn't very significant, high on adrenaline I wouldn't stop fighting.

Yes it works. Get hit in the ear just once. I didn't get clapped. I got hit with a paintball in the earguard of my helmet. Dropped me to the ground. I kept to running while I lay on the ground. Had no idea I wasn't standing up. Balance gone. Don't have to rupture shit.

I actually did this accidentally to my boyfriend when we were wrestling around and goofing off. A light, open handed cuff to the side of the head, and he was off me immediately and in a lot of pain. I felt really bad about it, but it certainly impressed upon me the efficacy of going for the ear in self defense. Maybe I just got him just right.

I used to spar boxing and a guy claimed I broke his ear drum . we used gloves. I thought that it must be the air being forced it with the glove He said he couldn't hear out of that ear for a few weeks or a month.
O was was teaching a 7 year old student the earslap with my fingers opened. When it his turn to preform the technique on me he did his with closed fingers. I had to take a knee to recover. That was my experience.
Ive been in a lot of fights and MMA too and had one guy sucker slap both my ears like a coward when I had my back turned.. It hurt like hell but all it did was make me very angry and want to send this guy to the hospital with no mercy... So in other words dont count on this move bud.

I slapped a guy with an open hand and he did go down instantly but I believe that this was more to the blunt force trauma not the rupturing of the eardrum.

ComplexBlackness Dealing with a large group back as a bouncer years ago. One attacker was in close. I was training in a form of Kempo-Jujitsu at the time. That technique was a solid choice for most in close situations.

That's exactly why the technique works well in fiction, at least I watch or read to disassociate from reality as much as possible, in a real fight I would say running always worked wonders for me

Have got my ear drums busted four times now… usually during sparing! Have a busted drum on the right ear as a write, which I got just over two weeks ago.
For me they are never really painful. They can be a bit sore the hours after, but that could just as well be from being hit. Also my balance is not affected at all. Most annoying thing, is that my hearing is affected a bit for about 2-3 weeks. It sounds like I have a bad cold on one ear, or water in the ear. I have alway been able to finish my training when it happens. It have always healed it self. The rupture I have now, is about 1,5mm. Going back to the doc for a checkup on January 10th.
I had a bacteria eat through my eardrum at one point. And I had to fly commercial airplane to get home. Do I have to say that it hurt more than anything I've ever lived through? And I'm a victim of constant, serious, back pain. Trying to manage "clicking" the eardrums to even the pressure when they are being eaten away is so painful..... It's like toothache but in the brain. It's horrendous.
My girlfriend told me that her sister's best friend, Sarah, told her that her uncle's brothers neighbor, told him that his wife's boyfriend's father knew someone that it happened to.
IDK what was really the point of having his martial arts friend there, if he wasn't going to actually do the move? 🤷♂️ But boxing someone's ears does work. The intent isn't necessarily to rupture the eardrums, but rather to throw off the person's equilibrium/coordination/balance.

First, distract target, then block his blind jab. Counter with cross to left cheek, discombobulate. Dazed he'll attempt wild haymaker, employ elbow block, and body shot. Block feral left. Weaken right jaw. Now fracture. Break cracked ribs. Traumatize solar plexus. Dislocate jaw entirely. Heel kick to diaphragm.

The slap probably can't rupture the eardrum but sure can make its owner see stars, get dizzy and stagger so you could escape or proceed to your next move.

My ex husband slapped me so hard he bust my eardrum. I couldn’t hear for like 3 days but the doctor said it’ll heal. It healed but my hearing hasn’t been the same since.

A friend of my had his ear drum ruptured when we were 10 and an older kid snuck up behind him and use both open hands. He use to be able to blow air through it and it made a light hissing sound. It happens if you do it right but I wouldn't try it in a fight since it may not work all the time.
I got hit in the ear & I heard ringing & pain!! Had to back up to recover using my footwork!! Then came back to finish my op!!
The intent of the strike is not to burst the eardrum, and any combatives coach will tell you that if they know what they are doing. It's to deliver as much force as possible in a very 'short' amount of space to the side of the head, by targeting the ears. The chances of 'perforating' the eardrum are very low due to the nature of dynamic head movements & targeting under duress, etc. The strike is also used in quite specific circumstances and not implemented in the way you just showed it (telegraphed as fuck).
Jean-Claude Van Damme used the ear clap pretty regularly in his films.
It is not the eardrum you should try to crack, it is the inner ear that you should get out of balance so your opponent becomes dizzy and then you put in your attack.
Catching someone in the nuts with knee strike on full contact will takes time for the pain to register before it's effective. People don't drop on contact with a nut strike and some can power through that (like with a Taser) to open a can. .

Another good technique would be slap the ears with both hands and in almost one movement grab the ears and furiously headbutt them numerous times. Sidekick to the ribcage and take off. Rumor I have heard is that not much force is needed to separate the ears from the head.
It’s not something I would ever rely on, in agreement with the video, but this was never taught to me as being something you ever expected to create definite physical damage from. It’s mostly a disorienting attack because being struck in that fashion, having had it done to me, sucks and really throws your faculties off for a few seconds. If it causes damage in addition- happy days. But I would never teach this is such.
Tangential to this, having also experienced this type of attack, the same sort of effect can be created by striking the side of the head with a jacket or other piece of large heavy clothing. Just FYI
It's a little bit for of an understanding but for me and I did this to myself lightly that If I cup my hands and slap my ear it causes a ring and off focus second so it's a good way to stun people for a moment if necessary
I'd be relieved if a hemorrhaging, perforated tympanic membrane is all I'd get from this sort of strike. I'd be waaay more concerned with tinnitus, vertigo, and possible concussion. As an instructor said repeatedly, don't block with your head.

You are not even winding your back for the the ear drum slap and its only one hand the other should be on guard. It does not rupture, it disorientates for a couple seconds so you can maneuver into whatever sao your going to.

I've actually had it done to me at 50% power by a martial arts instructor so as to "prove" that it works; it worked alright - I saw a big flash of white and just dropped to my knees. I had some choice words to say to the instructor for actually ear clapping me but he did point out that unless you feel it, you won't believe that it works, and I couldn't really argue with his logic.

I would do the clap, but I would cup one hand and flatten the other one. That way you stun them and throw them off balance. Which ever direction they fall, that is the direction you deliver a nice roundhouse to the head. Better yet, instead of clapping, start your strike by throwing a ridgehand and then twisting your wrist and opening your hand. More force behind your strike. You do not want this person on their feet. Knock them down and then kick the fight out of them.

Are these guys for real? Seriously a cupped hand strike with a step in the direction of the strike and sharp body twist with full Bodyweight behind it would likely do serious damage to the ear. Person would likely have ear problems for life not to mention how it spins the head which may lead to neck damage and chances are would shake head enough for potential knockout strike.

I am right now healing from a perforated eardrum I got during boxing. I could fight after getting that hit, I just decided not to due to concerns about further damage. I am lucky because it doesn't hurt and is perforated only half way, but it can absolutely be done. Problem is, that you need to be very precise and fast to pull it off maybe even a bit lucky. I would take their advice and go for the jaw instead.

Ok, you talked about the eardrum rupture that is so rare, but also you somehow implied that hitting the ears might not have any effect. I was hit with a slap on my ear at one point, it didn't KO-ed me but It wasn't ok also. I imagine if I bear hug someone with strong hands and he uses his palms to hit my ears it might force me to give up the hug or at least loosen it.
