To add on to the theories regarding how engines can be ‘related’ to each other, I like to believe that being built by the same company, being the same class, and being built in the same factory results in engines being twins like Donald and Douglas.

      I… wouldn’t say that.
There can be twins if the engines are built by the same manufacturer, same class, same factory possibly, but also the same colour.
This is why Donald & Douglas are twins, but why… um, I don’t know.
Engines like 46009 & D199 would be twins, since they were painted in the same livery, but Gordon & Flying Scotsman are brothers because they’re not exactly identical.

26:35 I've asked that same question myself.
Anyways, here's another fact. The Island of Sodor is real. Kinda. Let me explain. Sodor is separated from mainland England by the Walney Channel. The Walney Channel actually exists in real life, separating the real-life Walney Island from England. In the universe of the RWS and Thomas, Walney Island doesn't exist, as it is essentially absorbed into Sodor. And on Walney Island is the city of Vickerstown, which has both a similar name and layout to the fictional Sudrian city of Vicarstown. So you could technically say that Sodor exists in real life, albeit much smaller than in fiction.

The publishers asked him to write a fourth story to give Henry a happy ending, presumably so that they didn't scare children with such a gruesome ending. Awdry also intended to kill Henry in The Flying Kipper due to issues with how he was drawn, though eventually decided to have him rebuilt.

To be honest George carlin is a lot more famous here in America than you said, he was extremely popular and considered one of the best of this time and even to this day many credit him for their careers and wanting to be a comedian he also starred in many TV shows and movies
Also the fact of the colors for the Northwestern goes as follows up until ducks arrival because sir Topham hat wanted to preserve railway history so most engines kept the original liveries after that.
    Northwestern blue predominantly passenger work
    Northwestern green predominantly freight work
    Northwestern red mixed traffic
In the railway series specifically where they stock far more to railway norms and less so in the TV series you can see the engines of specific colors almost exclusively pull that type of train.
Also many people say that Donald and Douglas are painted northwestern blue but Audrey claimed that they were painted in Caledonian blue which is what they would’ve been in before British railways painted them black.

12:20 *whoa whoa whoa, hold up*
I know that TATMR might have been unpopular for the movie critics and hardcore Thomas fans who think that it was unrealistic, but on the other hand there are quite a few who enjoyed it, partly because of growing up watching it, and some have gone so far as to make rewrites or parodies of the movie which might have even made it better. Heck, just search up the chase scene, and you'll find *tons* of people doing their own takes on it, some probably over a decade old by now.
Yes, TATMR might not have been the best movie, but it wasn't that bad, was it?
(sorry if I sound like a Karen)

    • @TheThomasCynic
      @TheThomasCynic  Před 2 lety +11

You don't sound like a karen at all dude, nothing wrong with voicing an opinion. Saying that "nobody liked" TATMR was a bit of an overstatement on my part, it's just unpopular with the vast majority of Thomas fans.
There are good things about it (Splodge, the chase, the MUSIC), but on the whole it suffered from massive problems on a scale that Thomas has never really seen since. Now don't get me wrong, BWBA and now the reboot are so much worse that TATMR. On TATMR, there was definitely effort. However, as far as I'm aware even the reboot hasn't tried to put magic into the show. Now of course it's so unrealistic that doesn't really matter either way, but TATMR committed a crime that no other piece of Thomas media has ever committed (unless you count those stupid Magical Birthday Wish segments on the official YT channel).
The main reason people are still interested in TATMR, and making parodies and alternate takes on it... is because it's a novelty. The director's cut and the uniqueness of the whole magic thing make it very INTERESTING from a production standpoint. People are interested in it, maybe even invested in it, but there are very few who like it. Personally, I don't think it's the worst movie in the history of the franchise, since it had good intentions, but in the end it's still a poor movie with a plot that just doesn't work.

    • @TheBallWithTheShield
      @TheBallWithTheShield Před 2 lety +4

@@TheThomasCynic ay... that was indeed very well explained. The plot situation could be debated (though I actually don't know why Britt Allcroft went in that direction for the movie) but that'll be for another time. I completely agree about it being better than BWBA and the reboot, but I did rewatch it recently and I've noticed all the goofs that showed up in the final cut, especially during the famous chase scene at the end. I have seen clips of the "director's cut," and even though the plot was already pretty complicated as you mentioned in the video, some of the removed scenes definitely would have made the movie make a little more sense (and the song "Some Things Never Leave You" was, imo, a huge mistake to leave almost entirely out of it).
In the end, I guess we can agree that TATMR wasn't the best movie, and it didn't do well at all for the franchise as a whole, but there have been some upsides to it. (Also, its arguably the only non-canon official creation of the Thomas franchise, so that's something, I guess.)

Picked up Henry, and put him back on the track! Naturally this caused public outrage, and the show was put on hold for a few decades, Until Britt came along.

When you account for inflation, the 25 pounds that Stuart and Falcon each cost translates to 791 pounds today, with the full 50 pounds converting to 1582 pounds.
That price is the same as what the newly volunteer operated Talyllyn Railway had to pay for their number 3 and 4 engines. That was not a paltry sum, considering that railway preservation was pioneered by the Talyllyn, they were thus quite in need of money at that time.

And its funny you mention this right before the Culdee Fell engines, since that question applies way more in their case:
    - we've only read them in text, we've never seen them in action to give us an idea how they exist. We don't know how the faces work, if they're both alive or does one just shut off if its not needed.

In the tv series, the black wheels line was changed to gray wheels, probably to avoid racism issues. The book Toby, Trucks, and Trouble was also the last railway series book where at least one of it’s stories was adapted. I also think engines whose designers are related to be related themselves. A good example is Stephen Holden and James Holden, who are real life father and son and the respective designers of the b12 ten-wheelers (my interpretation of Alfred/98462’s basis) and the j70 tram engines (Toby’s basis).

Question on number 44. When did James visit Thomas’ branch. Going through all the engines in order:
1: Thomas obviously works on the line.
2: Edward may have visited during the events of Percy Runs Away as it he said he want to the quarry to collect trucks although this could be referring to the clay pits on his own line. Either way it is logical to assume that Edward assisted in the construction of the line as he was one of the first engines to arrive in 1915.
3: I also can’t find any reference to Henry on Thomas’s branch.
4: Gordon went onto to branch to rescue Thomas in Down The Mine.
5: I can’t find any example of James on the line.
6/7: Percy and Toby operate the line
8: Duck assist on the line in The Runaway
9/10: assist Thomas after his crash in Thomas Comes to Breakfast
    11: No example found.
Side note: it would be really interesting to see which characters in both the Railway Series and the TV show have met and know of each other. For example would Toby have ever met Rex, Bert and Mike? Would the narrow gauge know about Mavis?

I'm gonna list the ones that I didn't know. BTW I'm a huge Thomas nerd, and I was really excited to learn some new things when I found out you were making this.
Number 4: This is more of a technicality. I didn't know that they were gonna appear in Season 6, but I knew that they were gonna appear in the other specials mentioned. 1/2 a point.
Number 5: I didn't know about Thomas in Trouble, but I knew about the others. I'd also like to mention that Thomas Saves the Day appeared once in Season 1 and again in Season 8. 1/2 point.
Number 12: The first full point. I did not know this one at all. 1 point.
Number 22: Again, didn't know this one. Really cool fact. 1 point.
Number 36: I didn't know about any of these people. 1 point.
Number 37: Two in a row. I didn't even realize that this one had one more story. 1 point.
Number 42: I sorta knew that these episodes didn't include Thomas. I watched all of them, but I never really took a mental note and said "This episode doesn't include Thomas in it." I'm gonna give half a point because of that. 1/2 a point.
Number 45: This is similar to number 42. I've heard all of these different variations, but I never thought about how many they were. To me, it was just music playing in the background of an episode. 1/2 a point.
Number 47: A lot of facts in the 40s. Didn't know about how he was the publicity manager, but I did know about the thin clergyman. 1/2 a point.
    Number 50: I didn't realize this one. 1 point.
Number 57: I really wish that we had gotten Michael Angelis for TATMR. 1 point.
Number 67: I totally forgot about that line the Lorries from Toby's introduction. Very interesting. 1 point.
Number 68: I haven't watched much of Jack in the Pack, so that's why I didn't know this one. 1 point.
Number 81: Didn't know this one, and a lot of interesting stories could be made with them. 1 point.
Number 82: I wouldn't have taken him as a dropout. Interesting. 1 point.
Number 85: This episode was always my guilty pleasure, and I was always interesting as to how they got the carpet to work. 1 point.
Number 90: Didn't know this one. I get that they were desperate for money but WOW! 1 point.
Number 96: Of course I wouldn't know this one, who the f*** would've counted that? 1 point.
Number 98: I'm surprised that I never knew about these characters. 1 point.
Number 100: I knew about TATMR's name change, but I didn't know about the others. 1/2 a point.
Number 101: Again, I didn't count the number of hours. 1 point.
Out of 101 facts, I didn't know 18 of them. Well technically the ones with half points are counted as full facts, but it doesn't matter. I'm honestly impressed with myself that I knew this many (which is 83 by the way) facts about Thomas.

My guess for the reason the tugs didn’t appear in TATMR was the states the models were in at the time
Most of them were in storage at shepperton studios, except for OJ, the coast guard, Izzy Gomez, big Mickey, a few shrimpers, the fultan ferry, the cruise liner and other obscure props. And of those named props OJ and the ocean liner and a few shrimpers were the only props that survived the film, due to being shipped to Canada in cardboard boxes. And those props that lived were in their Thomas forms: Lake side III, SS roxxstar. That is probably why the tugs unfortunately didn’t appear in tatmr.

Fact 15, there were actually face masks made for Kevin and Victor implying it could’ve been an entirely model production. Implying either early regret at the cgi based off what season 12 was or just generally a cheaper budget. Like genuinely if I was like Nitrogen Studios or whoever was animating at the time, I would’ve used the models as basically the story board after switching to cgi. Like yeah you could draw all the scenes in locations and then animate them again, or you could have a set, take pictures of said set, then storyboard off of those.

Every other hobby and interest of mine-numismatics, war history, video games, and even psychopharmacology-are politicized, some more than others. It's tiring seeing everything devolve into political arguments. But the _Thomas_ community isn't politicized. couple of minor corrections, and a interesting note.
Wisbech is pronounced Wis Beach. Its on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border in the Fens, and lays on the A47 road between Kings Lynn and Peterborough, roughly North of March. The Wisbech and upwell tramway is also where the full size Mavis worked. These two types of engines also worked on the (Great) Yarmouth harbour railway, and the Ipswich Harbour railways. Audry was involved in a (now dormant) project at the Nene Valley Railway to build a fill size look alike of Toby based around a Cockerill steam tram.
When the original Thomas Stories were written, the national school leaving age in the UK for a state school was 14. Prior to 1918 is was only 12. This was increased to 15 in 1944, to 16 in 1972, 17 in 2013, and 18 in 2015, So Sir Topham Hatt wasn't a school dropout. Boys started their aprentaships at 14 prior to WW2, which is what he would have been if at Swindon works on the GWR.
When the Rev. W Audry wrote the stories, £50 was quite a lot of money. Four little engines was written in 1955. Today it would be £1,341.53 Scrap metal prices in 1955 were still controlled by the UK government, and were limited to £1 12s 5d (£1.64p) per ton. Considering these little locos only weight around 10 tons, £25 each was well over scrap price. Audry was also heavily involved in the Talyllyn railway.
Most of Rev W Audry's stories were based on true events. Saved from scrap for instance was based on the Teddy Boston saving his Foster Traction engine, alnough in the the illustrations and the TVS this was modelled on a Garrett No. 4 steam tractor.

Some facts I half knew, so I didn't include them when I counted. Including those, I would probably get around 70.
    A few things:
-HOTR did actually have a model series logo used on early trackmaster packaging
-Splode in CAE doesn't really make sense, as they are just arry and bert repainted. However in this shot, arry has a small purple patch on him czcams.com/video/gjKalKJeqUo/video.html
-HOTR and TGD may have originally been 1 movie, look at the similarities:
Leader of the Track and Hero of the rails seem like similar titles, stanley originally had a cut main role in HOTR, both movies involve thomas finding something old and having it restored.
-The DOTD darker cut: I have a theory as to what it may have been about. In one scene, Diesel 10 orders den and dart to push thomas to the back shed. Soon afterwards, the dieselworks catches fire because diesel 10 accidently made sparks with his claw. But why though? It's never explained. However I think that in the original cut, Diesel 10 DELIBERATLY set fire to the Dieselworks, and told den and dart to push thomas to the back shed to make sure he cannot escape and dies in the fire.
Wow, now I can see why it may have been considered dark.

Familial relationships (i.e. relationships based purely on being genetically/physically related rather than bond) would probably not be understood by the engines, considering that they don’t understand other basic human concepts like clothes.
