What!? ..What!? For three years I have been drooling over every LH axe posted to Axe Hunkies. Hands down the most beautiful hand crafted Axes made. Thank you so much Liam! My very own one off hand forged Hoffman Axe. Yes! At the moment, I Feel very special! Can't wait to put it to the test!
You are one lucky man. I'm jealous. :)
WOW WOW GRATS BROTHER!!!!!
Congrats, dude. I wonder if it will be a donation to you personally, or to the museum?
Congrats! I'd give my left nut for that Axe!
Congratulations justin, I cant think of a more deserving home for that work of art, eagerly awaiting your video of receipt!
One of humanity's oldest and most basic tools, also a thing of beauty.
Very nice to see you again
That belt grinder you are sharpening on is hella powerful! A couple passes and its already taken off a lot of material!
Oh he makes it look sooo easy!
About 30 years ago I read a book on sharpening. The book was written by a guy who held the Guinness record for taking a dull, rusty axe head and sharpening it, in record time, then shaving a four month old beard. I use a straight razor but am not champing at the bit to shave with an axe!
I love your work, young man!
What an awesome axe!
Love the shirt dude! :-) and the shout out to the( good of the land) he is a cool guy.. Not a bad looking axe either in my humble opinion.
nice Job liam, Justin seems the real deal and im not sure theres anyone more enthusiastic about axes on the planet, im sure he will treasure it
It will be the best in my collection!
Liam I really think u need to try make a wood bullet for Buccan Billy Ray that would be great to watch!!!!!
Nicely done thank you for posting found it very interesting.
I like this kid!
Awesome video Liam. You guys are getting better and better! Looking forward to the next one. Congratulations on the new shop, it's looking great.
A thing of joy is a beauty for ever.
Yeah man, I've been thinking about investing in a rotary platen... I always just tape foam to my regular platen for convex grinds... Great video... one day I'll learn to forge and try something like an axe... I'll know just where to go... Awesome video... take it easy...
I am sure Justin is extremely excited about this hatchet!!
You know it!
Deadly!!!
if i could like twice, i would
So dope.
Great video!
Another axecellent video! The quality gets noticeably better each time :)
Right on for Chad with his incense TURTLE! Another great video!
Yes that was fun to watch. Those one-of-a-kind pieces are the best.👌
Enjoyed and Thumbs
I've found through trial and error that same method for hanging the axe (especially driving the wedge that way) is the best. So many "tutorials" show & tell us to drive the wedge by pounding from the top, which tends to move the head away from fully seated.
damn thats sharp
I dig the Charlie Brown music at the end.
Beautiful axe, awesome craftsman !
Very cool. Be careful and don't burn the paint off your truck with it that close to back of the forge lol
"Have you seen my violin?" 🤣 Perfect!
Great video Liam Justin is going to love it
Thank you Liam, very cool
Really superb. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
That was sweet. Thanks, man!
Awesome work as always, Liam!
I'd love to have a rotary platen like that. I always sharpen in the slack area between my contact wheels, and my flat platen.
what a cool video! cool little axe and fun to watch "wood magic"
Cool process Sir an thanks for the knowledge Mr. Hoffman
Looks like This Old Tony has been showing you his cutting techniques.
Awesome vid, very entertaining, really enjoyed the music, beautiful axe.
Stunning
You have to much fun doing the show your crew and you act as one . Do you take ideas for future shows if so let me know . Take care of them a great crew is hard to find !!!!
You know I had recently made my first axe, had more trouble with handle shaping and fitting than I did hand forging it, about the third attempt and a shop full of sawdust I got it, you make it look easy . Love your work I wait every week for the next one. Ps make more knives. I’m out.
I would love to come work in this shop
Awesome axe!
Beautiful
Lookin pretty! Just about ready to order an Axe for myself. I think you could be cutting edge and offer a few wild color stain for handles to! I like that radioactive lime green myself. But think of the "Freedom" line you could promote. dip an end in red and the other in blue. 8) Love the vids!
Your wedging technique is interesting. Will try on the next hang
New business idea. Liam’s Axe Shave Club
great video guys! more music during pounding scenes would be awesome! peace
So I'm fairly new to axes but your stuff is gorgeous. I also live in NC, by the coast in Beaufort, and I'm still splitting all the trees that fell on my property during Florence. The storm kinda forced me into the axe world. One day I really hope to own one of your axes. Also has anyone mentioned how much you look like a younger version of Wranglerstar when you wear glasses? Keep up the good work.
You did a hatchet job on that.
Man I want one of those (wink wink nudge nudge):-)
You STOLE My Line! But - yup so do I want one
That is a beautiful axe. :)
Hoffman has left the building.
As always love the vids and keep em coming also thank you
Had to go try that three step ax handle making bit. All I got was a splinter in my hand and a look that translated into " Stupid Human" from my dog. Have to work at that I guess. . . .
If you want to take a brake have a whiskey drinkin axe throwing party shindig!
Wow, I could totally hear the hairs popping as the ax went through the ones on his face.
Well, I guess that answers Wranglerstar's question of "can an ax be too sharp?".
Have you ever used Live Oak for a tool handle? Might get full length grain runs on your curvy handles.
How can I order a few handles n I WANT 1 OF YOUR'S I JUST SEEN THE 1 BUCKEN BILLY GOT FROM YOU I LOVE IT YOU DO GREAT WORK BUDDY GOD BLESS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Got my finger over the F5 key waiting for the order page to open up again :-).
Just take my money already!!
I want an axe!!
This is way more realistic compared to forged in fire more tvtime on forged in fire
are you going to show us around all your awesome new tools?
Nice headphones I have the same ones
No tempering again? Lovely axe...
I would like to have one of those...
What do u charge for your bigger draw knife. I need it for peeling logs?
You know you’re a blacksmith when you use a giant hammer for everything
What sander is that your using? Who makes it and is it a 2x72?
You deprived me of some draw knife action when you made that handle...
It may not be a surprise he has got to be a subscriber too. lol Mr. Hoffman do you have a page to see prices on all your work? you have some great axes
But what grit was the second belt?
Liam, what limitations or reservations, if any, do you have making axes with convex cheek geometry more so like vintage axes? There have to be people asking for them or at least hinted at it. There’s been a lot of talk in the community about racing style work axes. 😉😉
The eight pound axe can you make one and what would be the cost ? Great show I good that your flexible with your cw shows great leadership 😇😇😇😇
Let me know about the axe again great show .
Do you heat your quench oil?
You should have cut a deal with Dollar Shave Club...pun intended
I'd still rather shave with a Liam Hoffman axe than a Gillette shaver.
Hoffman.....sounds like a good Dutch name.
4:58 I’m surprised you were able so that with a straight face...
just curious how often do you drop an axe in the oil quench tank?
Nice
420 tsundere Liam Hoffman
What is the belt grinder that is used for metal ?
Doesn’t the eye have to remain unhardened? How do you do that if you quench the whole head? I’m confused.
Nice hatchet!
David Coats
I wonder. Maybe he reheats the eye and lets it cool slower, for differential hardening? But since he didn't show it, i wonder if maybe instead he just doesn't heat it long enough for the back part to reach hardening temps before the quench? Since the back has more thermal mass, it might not have heated up as much as the blade.
Or more likely, he feels like the force on the eye of the axe during normal use won't be significant enough for him to require differential hardening.
Just guessing though :)
Is there any advantage to using an oven to heat treat as opposed to the forge.
Absolute control of the heat treat and getting the most you can or specific qualities from a steel You can harden a lot of steels by heating til red and dunking in an oil. But if you want more control you need an oven and the proper oil for quenching. Even steel like O-1 which is super easy to harden will be greatly improved by heating it and allowing it to soak in the heat. There are some terrific videos explaining heat treatment.
What wood do you use for your axe wedges?
Walnut
What oil do you quench with?
Is it weird that I watched this video while holding an old TrueTemper FSS (and small B4 ) stamped 3 13/16" bit 27" haft axe with perfect grain... That I have painstakingly evened up and slightly modified the fawn's foot angles, oiled, made a leather bit cover/shoulder sling for, sharpened...and just butcher block waxed... And no it is not even close to the first one! LOL!
Does it count that most every morning I have wood?
What's up with that surface grinder in the background? I've never seen a surface grinder with a belt before.
Supurp!!!!
Im not able to place an order on a Camp Axe on your website
Don't make fun of the turtle... that is incense-itive.... 😅
Beautiful axe, by the way.
Liam where is you dust mask, mate those particles when grinding can be very harmful, we want to see you around for many years to come, please get a respirator and wear it.
He probably does use one when he is doing his production work. Even if he doesn't did you see the vacuum he has under the belt? That thing is a monster. I doubt many particles get away from that.
I don't like when people do the "magic" shots where they skip all the work like in your handle part of the video. We want to see that stuff. We know what a finished handle looks like but we want to see you make it. Come on man!! Come on!! 😁
Dude got so swole swingin sledge hammers he outgrew his damn head!!! 😂 jk Liam!
Omg i nearly fell asleep
I came here because I heard that there would be a slow mo. pizza cinematic...
...there was not.
Mine, mine, mine?
