    About 30 years ago I read a book on sharpening. The book was written by a guy who held the Guinness record for taking a dull, rusty axe head and sharpening it, in record time, then shaving a four month old beard. I use a straight razor but am not champing at the bit to shave with an axe!

    I've found through trial and error that same method for hanging the axe (especially driving the wedge that way) is the best. So many "tutorials" show & tell us to drive the wedge by pounding from the top, which tends to move the head away from fully seated.

    • @BothHands1
      @BothHands1 Před 5 lety

      David Coats
      I wonder. Maybe he reheats the eye and lets it cool slower, for differential hardening? But since he didn't show it, i wonder if maybe instead he just doesn't heat it long enough for the back part to reach hardening temps before the quench? Since the back has more thermal mass, it might not have heated up as much as the blade.
      Or more likely, he feels like the force on the eye of the axe during normal use won't be significant enough for him to require differential hardening.
      Just guessing though :)

    Is there any advantage to using an oven to heat treat as opposed to the forge.

    • @Justusrabbits
      @Justusrabbits Před 5 lety

      Absolute control of the heat treat and getting the most you can or specific qualities from a steel You can harden a lot of steels by heating til red and dunking in an oil. But if you want more control you need an oven and the proper oil for quenching. Even steel like O-1 which is super easy to harden will be greatly improved by heating it and allowing it to soak in the heat. There are some terrific videos explaining heat treatment.

That I have painstakingly evened up and slightly modified the fawn's foot angles, oiled, made a leather bit cover/shoulder sling for, sharpened...and just butcher block waxed...
