The Cabin Episode 2: sometimes it's hard to believe how fast a place goes downhill when no one is living in it. Mice, water, and trash are the current problems I'm facing.
Luck my brother! To get rid of those mice get some peppermint oil not extract and a pump sprayer. Put a good amount of oil into the sprayer and fill with water and go crazy! This will run a good amount of them off. I use this mixture to keep mice out of my corvette that I keep in my outdoor shop. For the rebuild I would find a sawmill and use rough cut boards for the interior.
This could become my new favorite channel. Many of the items that mice touched can be cleaned, especially things like plates and furniture where they didn't burrow into the stuffing. You're never going to keep mice out 100% in a place like that. Best just to lay traps and repellant, and keep everything as clean as you can.
Looking forward to seeing the refit! The river is beautiful. My suggestion would be to put a basic camping trailer on it for the duration of the summer, get the wiring done first (including a caravan hookup), and allow yourself time to do a decent job, while enjoying the recreational space as well. Aim at getting the structure sound, weather and rodent proof by the winter, get the fireplace going and safe, with a good firewood supply. Then do the interior over the winter.
I would salvage the chairs for sure! The wood on them can be refinished, and the cushion can be reupholstered. I have had infestation of mice in my camper, and did have to throw away quite a bit, but there are things that restore better than others from the smell. It feels like such an intrusion when mice take over.. there’s a cheap way to get them out when you get to a stage after cleanup. Set out in saucers with cornmeal and baking soda in them. 50-50
You can clean the nice chairs, futon is great to use for a little place, just clean it and buy a new mattress. Clean it with some mix of 1 cup of vinegar,1 cup water and 2 drops of dawn. Spray it on and let sit for a few minutes and wipe it off. Repeat if necessary. Nothing is wrong with it. Save some money for the rebuild fund.
Surely the table ware can be saved, it’s ceramic just wash and reuse or donate. The chairs are lovely too, but I agree looks like the rest had to go. Best of luck with the work, it’s a beautiful spot well worth the effort
You can power wash the some of the things with a Disinfectant, and them use a ozone generator to sterilize and kill the smell. Just set up a tent and place the items in it. Set the ozone generator on let it do its job.
Mice pissing and shitting on every inch of that place, especially inside of walls. It would be impossible to make it sanitary short of burning it completely down. Lots of nasty things in there that you can't see that will make someone very, very sick. I know you don't want to but your health is much more important. I wish you all the best!
Mice and chipmunks every cabin ever owned. We fought with mice and Chipmunks just the way it is. What do mice and Chipmunks attract snakes! That's the beauty of living in the woods you got to deal with nature.
Get a dry roof on the place first, leave the open ceiling, nice coat of stain on the rafters. When the warm weather comes, the black ants love the moist wood, so you need to replace the rotted wood. Just dry the place up and most of the problems will be gone.
I can just smell it…Highly recommend the Goodnature Automatic mouse & rat traps. Invented here in New Zealand. Humane, poison free, self resetting. They just keep banging em on the head…
Good luck! You are going to need a lot of gloves and masks for the future. Put an RV on your property while you clean, sort, and build. I guess I would start by stripping everything down to the studs. Then you will see the rot and the animal holes. What a diamond in the ruff you have. Beautiful property with water and electricity, almost there to begin with.
That thing is a tear down. Rotted walls, shitty electrical, rotted floor, structual problems and a leaking roof. Prob all ontop of a failed foundation. Push it in and start over.
In the 1920’s my grandfather built a shack aboyt forty feet from the Wisconsin River. 50 years they passed a state law banning structures including little boat roofed boat storage areas less than 70 feet from the water. The citizens shoukd have gotten it repealed but the Milwaukee block did not care. So years later we got the note. Our beloved and memory filled shack had to go. 😫😭😡🤬
Thanks for sharing and sorry that happened 😞. It's a shame they didn't grandfather the existing ones in. Sometimes it's the little shacks that have the best memories
You are right, there's a lot of unusable stuff. Like i mentioned before, one thing at a time. I hope you'll have some help too. For the mice, buy some Bait Block or Pellet bait to get rid of them. ( if the chairs are in good condition, keep a couple of them) okay, dear heart, good luck. You can do it! Till your next video!
The chairs will clean up with some Mr Clean. We had out 32' camper in storage at new place and we got mice every where. I had to take everything out and wash everything and very place space . Point is we got rid of smell.
It is nice property... following and subscribed to watch the progress. where abouts? price paid? name of river? Any history of flooding at all? I think I would just pull a nice size destination trailer in there and live in that right along the deck closer to river. put in septic... run electricity to the trailer and SLOWLY tear down the cabin for a new build or recycled build. LQQKING forward to future videos! 😊
Speaking from 43 years experience in construction its not worth trying to save. It would wind up costing more than building all new from scratch. Also it was built right on the ground so event if you were to make all the necessary structural repairs. You still have not fixed the cause of the water problem. That is it being built on the ground or at best to close to the ground. It's like a sponge.
Dude rip it down to the studs. You will not be sorry. Just one section left alone and every time you enter it will small musty. Open it up all new insulation and wall board. Not ever worth cheeping out. I have done many of these in my life. New electrical. Sky light, kitchen plumbing. Its all low price if you do it yourself and take lots of picture. Must get structure sorted out Must. Always travel with a full truck or trailer each way never travel with space in your vehicle. You dont need to explain to use why. Just do it be happy and lots of time laps. Also good titles bring in more people
Health comes first for me and I wouldn’t keep anything that has been exposed to rodents, water, mold etc. In other words I would tear it down and start from scratch. I wouldn’t take the risk.
Dude, you should not be in there without a serious face mask. Mold, rodent droppings, rodent dropping dust. I'm talking rubber mask with replaceable filters. That mess won't just make you sick, it will kill you.
Thank you for the concern. 3M respirators rated for this environment were/are being used. There is a multi-day time lapse with all windows/doors open prior to this.

Bicarbonate of soda is also a brilliant way to clean the beautiful chairs and get rid of smells.
Beautiful river. You will have a wonderful place after a little work.

So looking forward to joining you in your journey of revamping your river cabin.love what your doing.cant wait to see what your plans are.👍
DUDEZILLA! ONE THING AT A TIME!!! DO NOT BE IN A RUSH!!!!! Trust me young Jedi!

Big project you got there. I'm excited to watch along.
Looks like a total tear down. Good luck!

Wow!! I’d say take ur time Rome wasn’t built over night.

Yep thats a demolition case. Cheaper to start over. Keep the chairs..best part of the house lol
Every time you mention going down to the river I'm saying, "Take the fishing pole!"

You're very right you cannot get rid of a nasty smell so what you can do is tear it down and put a triple wide❤❤❤ good luck buddy

How's the roof?

I have found it sometimes it is more economical to build new than it is to rebuild that which is damaged
Tom cat is good for that you can get it from tractor supply.

Looks like you need a small bulldozer and a huge garbage bin. I think itd be easier and quicker.

There was live mice, dead mice and Mickey Mouse.
Ozone generator. Run it wide open while you are not there.

Mice or rats? We had a shed roof infest with rats in a matter of weeks and they almost ruined everything with urine and nesting.
