  • Oak Flat (known in Apache as Chi'chil Bildagoteel) is a sacred site in Arizona’s vibrant Tonto National Forest where Native Americans have gone to worship, pray, and conduct religious ceremonies since time immemorial. Recognizing its responsibility to Native peoples, the federal government has protected the sacred site for more than six decades. But in 2014, a rider was attached to a must-pass defense bill directing the government to transfer the land to Resolution Copper, a foreign-owned mining company, which plans to construct a mine that will obliterate the sacred site in a nearly 2-mile-wide, 1,100-foot-deep crater. Now Becket is fighting to stop the destruction of the site, which would irreparably harm the religious expression and practices of the region’s first inhabitants. Oral argument takes place at the Ninth Circuit on October 22.
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is a non-profit, public-interest legal and educational institute that protects the free expression of all faiths. The Becket Fund exists to vindicate a simple but frequently neglected principle: that because the religious impulse is natural to human beings, religious expression is natural to human culture. We advance that principle in three arenas-the courts of law, the court of public opinion, and the academy-both in the United States and abroad.
At the Becket Fund we like to say we've defended the religious rights of people from "A to Z," from Anglicans to Zoroastrians. Our supporters represent a myriad of religions, but they all share our common vision of a world where religious freedom is respected as a fundamental human right that all are entitled to enjoy and exercise.
In defending these ideas, in theory and in practice, we find ourselves at the crossroads of church and state.

Yes! Save this land for the people who love it. Short-term profits are illusory and destructive.

in addition to cultural argument and plea, i believe the aquifer(s) nearby would be damaged. devil's canyon to the east is pristine. i hope there will be multiple pleas to save this terrain. and by the way, let's get rid of "riders" that get attached to bills. this threat is a result of a rider attached to a defense spending bill.......

I'm almost certain that destroying this sacred land is a violation of the U.N. charter of human rights. Can we take this case to the International Criminal Court. Everything the Nazi's did was legal because it was passed by law. But that didn't make it moral and the Nuremberg Trials created a whole new set of criteria for our kind. Power to you on Friday.

The US is not a part of the UN judicial treaty, but the case will go to the Supreme Court next.

The Tohono O'Odham, also of Arizona, desperately needed legal advocacy fighting the Trump Wall®.
