Asus Vivobook 13 Slate OLED Review - This Broke My Heart

  • Vivobook 13 Slate OLED is certainly quite the interesting tablet PC / 2-in-1 / detachable laptop from Asus and the main highlight is definitely that OLED display.
    General browsing, content consumption, you name it. That display is just simply gorgeous and it shows. Not to mention that you basically get all the accompanying accessories with the device itself for just about 600 USD, it really is quite commendable.
    However, there's a flaw. A huge flaw. Because of that alone, we can't recommend it.

    Thank you for this review. Looking to replace my surface pro 6, came across this Asus. On paper, this laptop is equipped with so many goodies that many can ask for. The OLED, awesome speakers, design is on point, and the fact that it comes with everything you essentially need already. Unfortunately, I was indeed bummed to see it only comes with 8GB of RAM. Powerhouse features as listed, needs a powerhouse processor to compensate, as well as to last long. If Asus can come out with a more kickass processor, this is a highly considerable laptop. As much as I love the surface, the prices are elevating every year. Even for just base models as well.

    Edited Update!
    Here's the new and updated video on the actual retail unit of the Vivobook 13 Slate OLED, do check it out for a more rounded and proper overview of the device! TL:DR - Performance is indeed better.

    The info below is the original comment, read for context if you need to!
    ---
    We just received some news from Asus. It would seem that the unit we received on hand was an engineering sample and was loaded with older firmware and drivers, thus affecting day to day performance. Asus will send us a retail unit of the Vivobook 13 Slate OLED sometime in the near future... so let's see if it's going to be any better...? We really do hope so. We'll edit this comment with the updated link once that new video is up. But in the meantime...
    Stay frosty.

      Don't kid yourself. They want people to buy this for their kids to do homework and doodle on - nothing more. It's not for you to do anything seriously creative with. I've supported ASUS for over 15 yrs, before their big box store deals, when they just made motherboards and as recently as the x570 mobo and a 2080Super. Not anymore though. Instead of using their roots to inform their design decisions, they follow suit of Apple and Microsoft and solder ram to boards and lock useful amounts behind insane upgrade paywalls. No thank you. Find ways to make products for YOUR PEOPLE Asus.. How about you stop chasing market share of Apple and Microsoft and maybe reconnect with your people? Maybe you can do both? Crazy idea. I know.

    The CPU power you get is adequate for the price point they're selling it at. It's about equivalent to a Core i3 from the 6th or 7th gen, which is ok for a secondary device. For media consumption it's almost overkill. Good review though, thx.

    • @Terafied
      @Terafied  Před 2 lety +5

      It’s still lacklustre in our opinion. A secondary device is something you whip out during short breaks or when you’re away from your main device.
      Time is of the essence and performance is key.
      We were a little frustrated just scrolling through webpages, searing on Google and watching on CZcams. It’s the chug and lag in between bits of loading things that really irks you.
      As a second device for general consumption, even an iPad would be more desirable. And if the Slate needs to be plugged for the full performance, it lessens its value as a second device.
      For the price point, yes it’s adequate. But is it value and worth? We would think not.

    Can you tell more about performance using google classroom and all the apps involved in education (Sheet, doc, jam board, gmail, google meet). Is the N6000 up to the snuff to just run these? Many reviewers have said the N6000 is good enough for regular productivity task but it seem like you are even unable to do that.

    • @Terafied
      @Terafied  Před 2 lety +1

      You could do all those. But it’s the interim loading between stuff that’s slow. Like saving a file, loading a file, switching apps, etc etc.
      If you’re just working on a single application or document, it’s totally fine. But it’s the ‘downtime’ in between stuff where you’ll really feel it chug. It simply doesn’t feel snappy or swift.
      But it can do all those. No issues.

    • @devilac69
      @devilac69 Před 2 lety

      Wow. I am surprised because even students need to be running Google meet, and also run things like jam board, chrome, etc.
      A good example is they would be in Google Meet and need to switch out to Chrome. Of course as usual they won't close Chrome go back to Meet then goto classroom & keep switching to other apps. If it is as you explained then it would be impossible even for the student to use. I am shock by how bad the cpu is since with 8GB ram it should definitely be enough to do all the basic productivity work.
      Are you certain you didn't get a buggy unit?

    Maybe Windows is too heavy for it. It should have been running Android. The aesthetics and form factor alone make me want to get one, but I've been trying to avoid Windows on any kind of mobile platform. I already have to put up with it on my gaming PC, and I think that's more than enough.

    Hehehe I do have one of this in my studio too. My review is coming soon.
    I generally think the same - though I don't think the Intel Pentium Silver N6000 is the main issue - it's both the processor and Windows - both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
    I formatted it to Chrome OS and it worked great. Even Linux works better than Windows by a lot.
    Also, I'm not sure if it should get a Core i3 🤔 will definitely need to add a fan in the device though.

      You've had experience running linux on it? Does everything work? With my Surface Pro 4 the touch screen and speakers don't work out of the box when I run a deb distro like Ubuntu or Kali. I haven't the time or energy to fight with drivers...if this thing works with Linux out of the box I want Asus to just take my money now!

      @@jeremyjohnson8703 Wonky support, to say the least. I tried a multitude of different distros and seems like it's always the usual case - brightness and WiFi doesn't work.
      Even if I got it working through some other means, it's not optimized and lags badly - especially CZcams. For some reason, hardware decoding is turned off and there's no easy way to enable it back.

    Why wouldn't they use an AMD CPU? A Ryzen 4000 or 5000 series CPU with integrated graphics would make this a must buy. No Intel CPUs please Asus.

    This might fit perfectly with what I need: a tablet that I can connect to my home pc through Parsec. All I need is for it to run Parsec smoothly and have 4G.
    Edit: it doesn't have 4G but there must be some good dongle out there, maybe even 5G.

    The low end processor and poor memory, that's what you get at a price of US$650 in average.
    This product is aiming user who only wants to watch video, web surfing and perhaps some messaging apps.
    We may expect Asus releaae upgraded model in short future as far as their "tooth paste squeezing" philosophy support my predict.

    A big 👎 for this review. Before you want to tell something, you should know something. Otherwise you can talk nonsense too... You have that freedom....
    I'm using it since a week. I choose it, because I know that I do not have tedious tasks. My previous laptop is of i3 processor, and I can confidently say Intel Silver 6000 in this Vivobook 13 is far better than a i3 processor. The desktop in my house too is of i3.
    I even read some articles on the net, which rated after some study, that silver 6000 performance is superior than that of i3.
    So, your this review is just your imagination, but not actual experience.
    Your title of this CZcams video itself is wrong. 'You liked it', means it was working fine. 'But, it flawed' means there was a problem after using it for some time. Did the processor changed from i3 to Silver 6000, after using it for some time?🤣🤣🤣 What you are talking?
