- I'm back with Phil, Ande and Nikita and we're up in the Peak District, just outside the village of Sheldon, not far from Bakewell.
We're taking a look at 'Magpie Mine', the last functioning lead mine in Derbyshire, that was active until 1958.
The site has plenty of remains left of the five lead mines that once worked the site.
As well as looking at the structures and lead shafts, we also look at the tale of the 'Magpie murders', where three miners from the nearby Maypit mine were suffocated after the Magpie miners lit fires underground following a dispute about lead rights.
A murder that all were acquitted of, leading to a curse being placed on the mine by the widows of the Maypit victims.
So how did they get away with murder? They must have had a good defence, right?

we really enjoy yr videos especially as we have visited most of the places in derbyshire where we live. Great minds think alike as we also end up walking through nettles and thick undergrowth looking at obscure stonework. A recommended walk is around the village of Ashover, between Matlock and Chesterfield. Lots of history, the light railway still has visible earthworks, the lovely Abrahams Bridge and walk along the stream to Fallgate, the remains of rails there, the railway earthworks carry on towards Dalebank, then around to Overton Hall (with remains of minehead stock and connections to Sir Joseph Banks) up to Cocking Tor with mine chimney along to Goss Hall, walking on old worn packhorse stone track then down to Butts Quarry. There's lots of information online about the railway and the village itself.
Oh that sounds fantastic. There are lime kilns there too aren't there?
yes some off Hockley Lane from the Hockley Quarry and some at Fallgate on Jetting Street with the old tracks still visible@@IckeWalks
Loved this! If you find yourselves in Cornwall, then Botallack Mines is an impressive site, and quite eerie! Also, the camel trail disused railway is a nice walk, as well as Rough Tor, and Helman Tor for some good stomps and rock formations.

Hayup Gareth, just after 8 minutes in there's a few strong darker green lines visible perhaps a trackway?
Where those sleepers stone, at the beginning the anchorage clamps looked broadly distanced broad gauge big tubs?
at 8.06 looking beyond the well built gunpowder room ( I guess you'd want it bullit proof !) there's a square sunken room building or wall? it's on the back right.
Nicely built Cornish engine room, straight roads around there, an what a story, Stomp Stackin is that a new genre?!

Nice one. I actually spent a day in that area 2 years ago making videos, filmed this place whilst up there, got home, and the footage had shot it!
