People who haven't experienced the fun of moto mods can't really understand the convenience and beauty of the Mods because there's no dangling wires .... I have watched the whole season of game of thrones on my ceiling with my Moto projector mod and it was damn fun now tell me what other phone in the industry can do that!!!!.... I take my mod on the camping trip my tent becomes the screen and it's so much fun to watch a movie in the darkness off the forest
Viral Patel although I personally think I would never buy a motorola phone, I can’t help but appreciate the mods. I wish every phone manufacturer did this. You can simply slap on a battery pack and have better battery life, or a beamer as you said.

From a Moto Z2 Play owner: what makes it unique and worthwhile is the mods (can you find another portable projector, boombox, extended battery, Polaroid, etc. in another smartphone?). Plus, it's practically stock Android with just a few tricks that make it really useful (yep, those old gestures that anyone can remember)
Please share about those cool tricks for those of us new or have forgotten...

The Moto z play or the Moto z4 and the newer ones are better
As an former owner of the original Moto Z Play, the battery life alone made that phone worth the coins for me. And that was before buying the Turbo Power power pack. I easily got through 3.5 days with it.
A phone can have all of the RAM, cameras, Snapdragon 9 Billion series processors that it can, but if it can’t make it through a day of use, what’s the point?

@@IsiahHD I'm still using the original moto z play and its still has great battery life. Been waiting 3 years for something that can match the battery life and replace the shitty moto camera. Unfortunatly, it won't be the Z4. It's the new Pixel 3A that has great battery and much better fingerprint sensor and camera that will destroy anything on the planet including iPhone. And for 400 dollars. The 3A makes this DOA.
For some reason after a year, the digitalizer broke without warning on my Moto Z Play. I didn't drop it or spill water on it. The cost to repair it was hundreds of dollars, so I bought a new phone. Before ending on a bad note, I really like that phone though, but that incident made me wary.
Nice of you to cover the phone mods, it feels like they have been buried in the sands of time.
But they hold a lot of potential just as you say, i'm hoping to see some upgrades to that in the future.

The original Moto Z Play made me a hardcore fanboy. I can't imagine living without the moto actions and that sweet battery life

Underrated: Mr. Mobile produces videos in native 18:9 (or thereabouts) so it's not cut off by my phone screen.

I have a few moto mods already being that I'm on a Moto Z2, so I really like the idea of not having them be rendered useless but also having a better screen design.

I've had the motorola phones for years (currently have the z2 play) and I love them just for the fact that they're good phones and they don't cost a grand. I have some mods, but I honestly barely use them.

No they went with "We still have mods let make another to help clear out the inventory".
This was a half baked phone that Motorola had no intention of supplying more mods for.
You're on your own with third-party scalpers and hopefully you get a legit mod.

Motorola giving users a stock experience, a headphone jack, and a microSD card slot makes this a good device for me. As well as Motorola being super good about open-sourcing their kernel, making custom ROM development easier. This is a perfect future LineageOS device.
I thought they kept certain carrier bootloaders locked down? I know there were only a couple carrier branded Moto Xs sold that had unlockable bootloaders, and I unfortunately didn't get one of them.
@@TheJunky228 Well I can't speak for locked phones sold by carriers, but on the unlocked GSM devices, you can unlock the bootloader of any Motorola device. I've used Lineage OS on the Moto G4 Plus, G5, and now the X4. All great devices.

@@TheJunky228 Why on earth would you buy a carrier phone? Why would anybody do that? That's what I've never understood. Carrier phones should be avoided like the plague for allot of reasons. Bootloader is just one of them.
Always appreciate the honest, somewhat detailed reviews in a quick format. However it sounds like the phone is pretty good if you like what the Moto Z line brings to the table. Most mobile phones will continue to get a little stale for new features or if they try to step out on a limb they may get burned like the foldable phone. This sounds like my next phone because it sounds like they are trying to get better at what they already have and do it at a reasonable price. I no longer shell out close to a thousand dollars a year for the latest phones that may come with significant bugs.

Thank you for this review, Micheal. But, as you said, I have invested into the Ecosystem of Motomods. I have 2 Turbopower mods, a projector and speaker mod and use them quite a lot. I don't mind about the specs too much, coming from a Z2 Force though I wish they would've done a Z4 force. Still, will most likely purchase it though.
I loved the original Moto X. Probably my favourite phone so far from any manufacturer. The only downside was the camera.
BDM4972 agreed 100%. What an amazing phone it was really groundbreaking and from that point on Motorola just couldn’t really duplicate its success.
Well this does finally have a good sensor.
@@Darve81 moto x was groundbreaking but it was not successful. It did not sell well and Google lost money on that and the plant they had in texas. It was probably the only smart phone ever assembled in the US. Except maybe back in the late eighties/early nineties there may have been some brick phones and 550 flip phones. Remember those? That was the glory days of Motorola when they had 90 percent of the market.
The Moto X Style was the last greatest phone of the Moto lineup before Lenovo laid waste to the brand.
Moto V9 was the best era. It had even better sound on low ass-56kbps res MP3 than my Huawei P8 or my P20 on 16 bit FLAC.
Are they going to produce mods again? They're pretty hard to get these days and I just got myself the Moto Z3 (absolutely love this phone!!)
Mr.Fisher, are you using a new video camera? It feels like your video quality has gotten better, even though I'm watching at the same resolution that I always have. Everything seems much more crisp, the contrast seems a bit better and the colors pop more.
Unless you really want the better camera, the Z4 is a better phone then the 3a XL. More storage while be expandable, bigger and a bit brighter screen and a more premium build. Granted the 3a will get faster updates.
Is it just me or does the screen look allot nicer on the Z4 over the 3A XL. I played with both a few times at best buy and to me, the calibration looks better on the Moto. And the bigger screen on the smaller body just looks modern wheras the Pixel looks like a budget phone. That's the thing about the pixel. It does not even look mid grade. It looks like a cheap budget moto G. Motos run mostly pure android but they do a few things to the UI that make it seem not so boring. Its still very stable but not dreadfully boring like a really pure experience that pixel offers. I've been going back and forth between the two. But the Z4 seems a better overall package.
@@HiPlains1 I a have smaller 3a and I can't say the tuning is better or worse. The Z4s boosted and saturated color modes are a step more exaggerated than on the 3a.
You're right about look and feel. The Z4 is head and shoulders above the 3a's in build quality and design. Moto has done a great job over the years working withing the confines of the mod design.
@@RyRyTheBassGuy Well if I get a pixel it would be the 3A XL And the Z4 has a bigger screen with a smaller body. Your probably right about saturation on the moto. I worry about the battery life on the pixel. I'm sure its pretty good but I know moto's do very well on the SOT. Its getting more then an hour over the XL with a smaller battery and larger screen. Moto really knows how to optimize android better then google. My old moto z play is still getting 2 days after three years. Been waiting for a moto energizer bunny with a better camera and I guess this is it. I shouldn't complain. Surprised they reverted back to a large battery with headphone jack etc.. Thought those days were over. But I'll say its about time. Consumers have been screaming for larger batteries for years.

Thanks for talking about Motorola's folding phone that will be coming up! If it proves successful, Motorola (or is it Lenovo or "Motonovo") have done a fantastic way to revive the Razr name, not to mention smartphones made right! Speaking of which, I might be interested in this phone because of its streamlined Android software, headphone jack AND SD Card support. However, how does that compare to the physical keyboard smartphone coming up next month. I'm looking forward to the review of that. :D

I have a z3 for work and quite enjoy using the phone, I just wish that someone made a keyboard mod for it, I really don't care much for any of the other mods but a sliding keyboard like the Droid would be awesome.

I just got my Moto Z4 and I think it's the best of them all. Granted, I've always been a Motorola fan, so I had some mods and I've used the previous iterations of the Z phone, but I still think this is a great phone. The screen is amazing! I'm not as thrilled about the SD 675 and 4gb of RAM, but everything else is great!

Can't imagine how happy I was when I saw a notification from Mr Mobile. Being a fan of yours is becoming something close to a lifestyle.
The hand wave for notifications was on the Galaxy S4 along with air view.
Glad to hear Motorola is in the black. Hoping that it will push them to innovate in later phones. I still own and use as a daily driver a Moto Z2 play. Having had it for 2 years it is the only phone I have owned in the past 10 years that has aged well and that I will use until the 3 year mark.
Still happy with my z2 force with 6gb ram. Will be keeping it and get a z4 much later when it's cheaper just for the camera upgrade. I've got a load of mods that I want to keep using :)

Love my Z4!! Battery is next level and it's faster than my note 8. I only paid $250 unlocked no contract. My Best Buy had the mods 50 percent off on clearance also. Talk about winning.
How is The Sound/Audio, Speakerphone, Phone Calling Audio/Hearing (Without Any Headphones) and Over-All Sound/Audio Quality on The Z4...?

I can't be the only one who thought the comparison shot with the 3a looked much better on the Z4 can I? The pixel crushed those shadows and you could barely make out the details on the pillow while the Z4 had everything in clear view with better colors imo
@@tang9538 it is a massive improvement compared to prior Moto cameras. The price is really the only problem with this phone.
Forget about the Z4 dude, you can currently find a refurbished or open box Moto Z2 force for just around $110 now!! For a device with a SD835 in it, it's honestly such a steal for the price.

well I want into the moto mod stuff, the physical zoom of the Hasselblad still sounds appetizing to me, but right now I cant decide if the z4 is worth the extra $150 over a z3 play that is $150 I could use towards a Hasselblad, and a battery mod sounds amazing given I dont always have access to a wall port to charge with. so I as you my fellow youtube peeps is the z4(aside from the camera) worth it over the z3 play? I plan on going prepaid/republic wireless with it, so I could maybe end up on Verizon but the prepaid Verizon(the 5g mod is available for the z3 too). I have a OG moto x(that works half the time) and a g4 its time for an upgrade lol.

You have to give motorola the respect that it deserves. Not only did they try something new and different when it came to the mods, but they also stuck to it even tho their were people bashing it for the idea. The only company that made a extra battery that magnetically stayed in it's position with no cable, a projector that can go up to 70 inches on a wall, or turning a phone into a boom box. No other manufacturer would have tried these and not stop it after a year or two of people not catching on. Had a moto z3 and my father jaw dropped when I snapped a battery to it and went up to 3 days with no charge while he had an iphone that would last him about 8 hours in the day

Was hoping for more creativity from Motorola. I switched to a Mate 10 pro from my Z3 Play for the camera. I miss the Moto display more than anything. One of the best software experiences on any phone I've owned. I'll be patiently waiting for Motorola's next release.

As u stated, I really like motorola's UI, it is lightweight and almost clean android (I still own moto g4 plus).
I want small screen, and a second e-ink screen.
Maybe the correct idea for moddable phone is to make it easily work with generic parts (or parts ripped from other phones).
