For best results, and less Bondo later, you can pull off the edges of the mat so it no longer has a hard edge and is thinner along its outter perimeter. Just grab the edge of the fiberglass with your gloved fingers, pinch, and pull. Do in small bits all the way around your piece and then lay it will up with resin. If you have a hole that requires significant build-up, use multiple, small pieces prepped as described above and overlap them over one another, making sure to cross-cross the mat’s primary weave direction for the best strength. Do this until your surface is slightly proud of the existing, and thinner along the edge of the repaired area. Then carefully sand back to the original shape. When you get close to the final shape, swap your sandpaper around a wooden block as to not dish out the new surface and fare your repair into the existing contour lines.

I've gotten self a canoe that's over 20 years old and has traveled from SA (where I'm from) to the UK (where I am now) so as you can imagine it needs a lot of work. This is the first video I've seen that actually helped me understand how to restore this canoe. Thank you so much for this

You stated in your full restore video, that you had lot of footage that you would be releasing, showing us more of the individual techniques you used. Is this still your plan?
I'm using your videos as a blueprint for my own canoe restore. I'm particularly looking forward to the
    -varnish of the hull
    -gunnel replacement
    -weaving of the seat
    -making your paddles
Fantastic videos, looking forward to more.
    All the best🙏

I really like your work. I really do. Also you did not do a bad job reparing the canoe. But actually I think you need some more input for repairing fibreglass the right way. ;) @oldshovel
Probably take some look at repairingvideos from aircraft (glider aircraft) to see how it works. There are also some bike repair videos really well done. Mostly german guys doing these vids, or the dutch. Especially when repairing aircraft. If you know some german I could also recommend a book to you which basically is used by every german aircraft technician to repair fibreglass (and carbon) aircraft.
If youre doing two layers of glass up on each other, the upper layer must be slightly bigger than the lower one, such that every patch has a bond to the old material - where we again have to see different layers to bond. Otherwise it is just an extra layer of mass you add - which you would not want. The extra layer which has the same size as the lower one will not add any stiffness. Also the second layer must be layed up in another direction. In this case it is not that bad as it is bidirectional cloth and therefore will be just fine. But even her it would be better to use a difference of 45deg in layout. Probably it is also an idea to use less resin or at least use some techniques to even it up in place of just putting masses of resin onto the boat. It is just a canoe, it is not that bad. But after doing this several times the cannoe will get heavier without gaining any stiffness. This is not what you want for that boat.
Otherwise please continue. This shows how easy it is to repair stuff. And how much joy it can bring to someones life. I especially like your bike restoration videos. I really love it. II always tried to restore my bikes and maintain them as long as somehow possible. Also did it with some people here and gave them "old new" bikes if they can not afford a new bike. I love it and hope you can encourage more people to continue keeping their old stuff repaired rather than consume new stuff all the time - as it does not make you any happier. :)

Catching up on some of your videos and wonder if you'll post more about this canoe! Looks like a great project. If you don't have one yet, you should find a copy of Omer Stringer's The Canoeist's manual. In it, he describes the J Stroke which is essential in keeping the canoe straight without moving the paddle from one side to the other. Lots of videos about it too obviously. Merry Christmas from Ottawa!

I was just wondering what you use on 1:02-1:42, and on 6:09. Is it a kind of disc sander? Is it a drill with a disc attached to it? What kind of sand paper/disc you use? Is there any difference?
    Thank you!

Only problem I had with this restoration is the catalyst mix. It's by volume not weight. 1 oz liquid VS 1 ounce weight are not the same thing. An oz of liquid mercury and an oz of cooking oil are ounces in difference. You don't weigh volume.
