How to turn 40 bucks into 3 or 4 HUNDRED!. A damaged fiberglass canoe off craigslist gets restored as good as NEW. The repair could be done the same way on a Kevlar canoe.
Thanks! This video series is exactly what I needed to know to bring my 40 year old canoe back to life. I appreciate the straight forward talk and complete demonstration. Excellent job!
I know this is a very old video, but want to thank you. Because of your helpful tips and instructions, I found the confidence to repaint my own canoe. And I am SOOOOOOOOO happy with the result! 😊
This video series has inspired my own fiberglass canoe restoration project. I came across a very odd specimen 17' with no gunwales and bulkheads for the seats. Heavier than I'd like but the price is right and the flat bottom is nice with the kids.
Awesome series man...just bought a 30 dollar canoe from a garage sale and will be doing everything you did except we are going to go with the p 40b tiger shark look. Thanks for the guidance.
It's so hard to fix something up just the way you want & then sell it. I've always had a hard time doing this. Your daughters received an amazing gift there, great work.
Thank you!. My adult son wants a canoe for his young family. He does not have much money so I wanted to get him one for his birthday. I am picking up two free canoes today and I am anticipating using this information for one or both. LOVE the sticker and the fact that you did this for your daughters. Thanks & God Bless.
Thank you for showing me what to do with an old canoe that was given to me! I sanded it , used marine epoxy on dings, and Kevlar on noses and keel! Two coats of the oil based paint was perfect as well! I had initially tried to use gel-coat before I saw your video and the got the mix wrong. It was expensive and set up way to to quick. Sanded it off and applied the oil based paint which is much easier to work with and more affordable than the volatile gel coat. I'm taking it to Ocala National Forest this Thursday for a paddle at Salt Springs!
Woooow what an inspiration and the fact that you are so humble and let your wife and daughtets try it out first and said "how do you like your Canoe? ... Its all yours!" Really tied this video together just wow all around!!!
We just picked up a free conoe someone was throwing out . It has similar damage. Thanks for the video . Now I know how to repair and paint it !! God Bless !!
I have a very similar fiberglass canoe that I put a large hole in the bottom. After watching this video I think I'll attempt a repair! Great instruction!
Two thumbs up my friend! Awesome restoration project. You make it look easy for sure! The final product turned out beautiful and useful. Forty bucks and a boat that should last a lifetime now, doesn't get any better then that!
WOW! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just bought a wicked cheap canoe from the Salvation Army and let me tell you, she needs some serious help. It didn't look that hard to do and I'm not afraid of a little bit of sweat equity. Again, I can't thank you enough. I can't wait to take on this project and head out on my beautiful Minnesota lake!
Really enjoyed this two-part video. I picked a fiberglass racing canoe out of our neighbor's trash. I sanded it down inside and out. Looks great. I have some minor fiberglass work to do internally, nothing really wrong on the outside. Painting it red, though. Really, thanks for taking the time to put this video together. So well done and I am really confident about my roll and tip now.
Thanks for showing us this, we are in the process of restoring our old red Canoe, which we picked up in Canada before sailing to Australia :-) Not only are we going to follow your guide here, but we will also paint her British Racing Green :-). Thanks again .. Simon and Eryn ...
Um... wow! I am truly impressed! I just got a free canoe from my neighbor that had a couple bogus patches on it. I have removed them and have a fiberglass repair kit. This is some next level attention to detail, and a bit intimidating... even though I'm a tradesman! they are just gouges, so I will be doing all the repair from the outside of the canoe. I may get some auto Bondo and tune it up and paint it now though... What a tutorial!! Hats off sir!
YP thanks so much for these 2 videos - i have finished the sanding and start painting my canoe tomorrow. In 2 weeks im fishing for bass with my 5 1/2 y/o boy. I got an old dinged up $80 canoe and its starting to look really sweet. cheers mate. Chris/Australia
How did it turn out and the total cost? I have an old one laying around from my parents and it needs to be refinished to stop the water from leaking in. Lol thinking about doing the same steps
Very nicely done! I recently purchased a 1971 Dolphin Chief, fiberglass canoe. It's in pretty good condition but needs cosmetic restoration. The paint is faded and the gel coat is almost gone. It also has a nickel sized hole in the bottom. My goal is to restore it as close to it's original condition as possible, then either sell it for a massive profit, or keep it. Either way, I appreciated this video. I had a basic idea of how to effect the restoration. This video, with your commentary, made sense of what was crawling around in my head. Thanks.
Beautiful! I have 2 old kayaks given to me a year ago that need A LOT of work and I've been siting on the project mostly because I'm daunted by it, but you've inspired me. Thanks.
Yank first great find and follow through on the project. That smile and feeling you get when your steeped in satisfaction from a project that has meaning to a loved one, has gotta be one of the best feelings there is. My satisfaction comes from the satisfaction of others. My joy comes from the joy of others. A Fathers love for his children should always mimic the love of our Heavenly Father. Always a pleasure to watch your exploits and the message is clear to those that listen. God bless you.
Yep, she's a beaut. I'll raise my glass of ice tea to you later today. I remember my dad's aluminum canoe we had back when I was a skinny little kid, paddling that barge (that's what it felt like at 7 or 8 yrs old) around Lake Audy and Lake Winnipeg.
I also have a fiberglass canoe just like the one you repaired. My looks like a clone of yours, crack is about the same in the same place. Thanks to your video I feel like I have repaired it already.
Great work on the two videos! I just bought a nice used canoe for $70 and then turned around and picked up one for free that was going to be just thrown away. I will be using the two videos as a reference to get my two canoes looking just as nice as yours. (hopefully) ha ha
Too funny, I swear I have the same canoe and was just about to start some repairs. Thanks for making me feel like I am going cutting corners but nice job!!! You are the reason it takes me so long to do everything... I am going to try and keep it simple but I am going to definitely use your painting technique.
Very nice job! Allow me one critique though! Having roll and tipped for over 30 years may I suggest when tipping, brush from dry to wet rather than other direction. I think you will find a smoother transition on the wet end with less brush marks and less build up on the ensuing roll end. Just sayin’! 😁
I just brought home a 12' fiberglass canoe similar to this. I've spent the afternoon sanding it (it was in much worse shape), and I cant wait to apply your method. I'll let you know how it goes.
You did an awesome job! Wow. It looks amazing. I used to own an orange canoe similar to that one but the tips went up higher. I think it had factory pin stripes too. It was pretty neat.
i found you video part one and two very helpfull as i am restoring my canoe aswell and i think i might give the rolling and tipping a try it looks awesome thanks for all the advise
Very cool, nice to see something being fixed up and re-used instead of running to the closest sporting good store to buy some over priced flashy new "thing"
Excellent videos, your meticulous attention to detail is awesome! Well done my friend! btw I think the narration is from Matthew McConaughey.... just sayin'. lol
Wow! Excellent job! I just got my hands on a 16 footer for free. Looks a bit rough but it floats. I'm planning on doing the same thing you did. Hope it turns out as well.
As luck would have it I found one very similar on Craigslist, price pretty similar too going to look at it tomorrow and have saved your videos in the event I buy it. If nothing else it will give me a platform to practice repair skills. Great videos!
Thanks for the great video, very glad i found it. I was given a ugly yellow unit that is 16' or so that has some keel damage. Was guessing at the repairs and you did them as i expected. I was taught dab as well. Now to decide what colour i will make it.
Wow! Talented and a loving good dad... very sweet of you to make that for your daughters! I can tell you are a real hunk of a good man!!! I just bought a 12 ft. canoe for a musical movie that I am making. I have no clue how to do the repairs. Although I watched your video, I don't feel confident to make this like you did. I wish you were nearby and could help me in person! Hahaha! I know that's not happening! I'm just afraid I'll mess it up. I don't have the fiberglass saw either. Ah.... what to do now? What say you... oh, and I didn't get your name, please? Thx! Wonderful job on your restoration!!! Best wishes! Sylvia
Thanks! This video series is exactly what I needed to know to bring my 40 year old canoe back to life.
I appreciate the straight forward talk and complete demonstration. Excellent job!
I am really glad that it helped, makes it worth it to have made the vid.
Second Frontiersman Canoe I am restoring using your videos. Perfect! Thanks.
I know this is a very old video, but want to thank you. Because of your helpful tips and instructions, I found the confidence to repaint my own canoe. And I am SOOOOOOOOO happy with the result! 😊
love the idea of a Kevlar keel guard. Excellent job!
This video series has inspired my own fiberglass canoe restoration project. I came across a very odd specimen 17' with no gunwales and bulkheads for the seats. Heavier than I'd like but the price is right and the flat bottom is nice with the kids.
Couldn't help but smile at "it's all yours". :-)
Unreal never thought it would look that good. If I do my old canoe, I will follow this. Thanks
Thanks, man. I'm in exactly the same happy -- a $50 canoe off craigslist and not reallly sure where to start. Feeling confident now.
Thank you!. My adult son wants a canoe for his young family. He does not have much money so I wanted to get him one for his birthday. I am picking up two free canoes today and I am anticipating using this information for one or both. LOVE the sticker and the fact that you did this for your daughters. Thanks & God Bless.
Wow!! Very nice!! Look forward in fixing up my beater canoe!! Thanks for sharing learned a lot !

That is some great feedback and I appreciate you taking the time to write the comment! Been to Ocala too, beautiful horse country!

I have a very similar fiberglass canoe that I put a large hole in the bottom. After watching this video I think I'll attempt a repair! Great instruction!
Thanks for such a detailed example! Just picked up a decent fibreglass canoe, and this will help me complete an update on the paint properly. Cheers!
Two thumbs up my friend! Awesome restoration project. You make it look easy for sure! The final product turned out beautiful and useful. Forty bucks and a boat that should last a lifetime now, doesn't get any better then that!

Rolling and tipping. Gonna have to remember that one. Looks beautiful.

that is AWESOME!
It came out fantastic. Great job. Paddling it will mean so much more.
Thank you for this! I just scored a 16’ Mohawk ($20!!!) that I am going to restore under your video tutelage.
How did it turn out and the total cost? I have an old one laying around from my parents and it needs to be refinished to stop the water from leaking in. Lol thinking about doing the same steps

Well Done sir!!!...Since part 1 i have been probing the web for a cracked canoe!!!
That project came out amazing. You make me want to go out and build something. Great work and thank you for sharing!
Excellent restoration! I was surprised to see how easy that is to do. Just time and hard work. Thanks!
Absolutely awsome congratulations great job .I just picked up old 50 dollar canoe I'm using your advice to refab thanks again
Good job man. Really appreciate the detail and explanation...now I'm gonna try a really nice damaged canoe i have!
I also have a fiberglass canoe just like the one you repaired. My looks like a clone of yours, crack is about the same in the same place. Thanks to your video I feel like I have repaired it already.
Very nice job. I have done a lot of fiberglass work and in my opinion your procedures were perfect.
What an awesome job! Thank you for your excellent instructional video.
Great work on the two videos! I just bought a nice used canoe for $70 and then turned around and picked up one for free that was going to be just thrown away. I will be using the two videos as a reference to get my two canoes looking just as nice as yours. (hopefully) ha ha
It would not have been complete without the sticker.Great job and may God bless you!

i watched both parts. as a repairer myself. they always turn out fantastic if you take your time
Too funny, I swear I have the same canoe and was just about to start some repairs. Thanks for making me feel like I am going cutting corners but nice job!!! Great video...very detailed, doesn't get much better than that. Also, love the ending! Nice work
Glad to see there more people like us in the world.Great project
Great video... It was exactly what I was looking for! I need to refinish a canoe this year and needed a little guidance!! Thanks and best regards!!
Amazing, I am really impressed man. That thing looks brand new and I know that finish is better than it was when new.
Very nice job! Allow me one critique though! Having roll and tipped for over 30 years may I suggest when tipping, brush from dry to wet rather than other direction. I think you will find a smoother transition on the wet end with less brush marks and less build up on the ensuing roll end. Just sayin’! 😁
Great job, the canoe seems to have that 'classic' look, like it'd be right at home next to an old Jetstream camper.
Definitely going to find the time to do this if the right deal comes a long. Thanks for the idea, your project came out great!
I just brought home a 12' fiberglass canoe similar to this. I've spent the afternoon sanding it (it was in much worse shape), and I cant wait to apply your method. I'll let you know how it goes.
