Who Can Afford This? A Table Rock Lake Fail

  • This is still part of "The Long Neglected Friends Series". Table Rock Lake has always been a special place for our family. It is so fitting that there is a "no fishing" sign along the shoreline. Another favorite of ours was Cabela's. It is just not the same since it was purchased by Bass Pro Shops. Most of our friends feel the same way.
    When we were growing up most places and homes were comfortable, now everything has to be fancy and ostentatious. Our schools were modest and practical. Now there is marble and polished brass even in elementary schools. Can we taxpayers continue to pay ever increasing property taxes?
    We love Missouri and feel it offers the best outdoor experiences. $567 for a tent... We will camp elsewhere. Do you agree or are we totally out of touch with reality?

    Just returned from Shell Knob, stayed at Kings Harbor Resort. 200$ a night, Kings River Marina is 5 minutes away. Beautiful area, low boat traffic, grocery store and restaurants close by.Rented a nice tri-toon for half a day for 350$. Spent roughly 1200$ for 3 days, not cheap, but doable.

    I've lived here my whole life - 58 Taneycomo & Table Rock is nothing like it was 50 years ago. it's become overly tourism driven, over crowded & the natural peace is fading fast. I remember when the strip was just a Dairy Queen & the Baldknobbers - my friends & I now call the area Spring Vegas

    There is no common sense anymore . Destroy a beautiful lake and communities all over a dollar . And Bass Pro should know better .

    We ate camping nearby at a coe park for 14 a night with our senior pass,regularly 28. There are numerous coe parks in the area that are still affordable; old 89, Indian point, cricket creek where we're staying. All still very affordable. Try looking again. 14 campgrounds.

    Huh, we have stayed at the Big Cedar Lodge cabins before and they did not cost that much per night. Why in the world would an even glorified tent cabin cost that much. We heard coyote packs howling all during the night close to our cabin too. It was kind of scary and creepy so would not want to be in a tent there.

    I have visited this place (drive through) several times. Even though I am able to afford this type of accommodations I would never choose to. I find BassPro’s pricing insulting. There are dozens and dozens of very nice places to stay on Table Rock at half or less than half of these costs with facilities to accommodate a family much more comfortably and with more privacy. Unless you are rich enough to simply not care, then none of the BassPro offerings are for you.

    I had no idea the glamping tents were so expensive! I know Big Cedar had bought the Marina from Gages that had it forever and made it very posh.

    the answer to "Who can afford this?" is people who are spending WAY more for WAY less elsewhere in the country. That's why this region has seen a major influx of big spenders since 2008. Their life became untenable where they were, but by coming here they can have as good or better than they ever had there, for much less. it will hit equilibrium eventually and it won't be any cheaper for them here than there. This region has just been pretty heavily isolated from the economic development the coasts have seen since the Second World War. It isn't surprising that it's happening, it's surprising it took this long for it to happen.
    They are people who exclaim "You mean i can live in a huge mansion on a huge chunk of land and spend all day boating and fishing and it's ONLY going to cost me an eighth of what a shack cost me before ? HOLY CRAP, LET'S GO. " You think it's getting silly expensive, they are shocked at what they can get for their money. This should serve as a wake up call to people in the middle of the country, you accept FAR too little compensation for your efforts.

    • @inspiredartphotos
      @inspiredartphotos  Před 4 měsíci

      Sad development for average folks. Missouri as a whole is still cheaper than either coast with a better quality of life!

    • @baneblackguard584
      @baneblackguard584 Před 4 měsíci

      @@inspiredartphotos yes, as a state I don't expect that to equalize, but attractive spots within the state like Table Rock Lake and Lake of the Ozarks, the pricing will eventually balance out because it draws those with money from the coasts. There has been an exodus of people from shoreline properties on the coasts to better shoreline properties on these lakes in the middle of the country since 2008, it's accelerated in the last few years because it's drawing people who could never afford shoreline properties there, but here they can afford lakefront or lakeview.
      I agree on the Quality of Life aspect, lived in Missouri all my life. I suspect what WE consider quality of life differs from what they do. as a result expect the lake regions to shift more to what THEY consider quality of life.

    Go to enjoy the outdoors to be manhandled with cost. I get it. States try to maintain these beauty’s. It’s only going to get worst with newer generation losing interest in nature, which means less money going to the state to preserve these parks.
    My wife and I live in Amarillo tx. We camp at Palo Duro Canyon often. We prefers to camp off the beaten path now. Cheaper and more peace. Even though pdc is very reasonable priced.

    The governor passed a law that said you can't drop a anchor within 50 feet of a private dock.if this isn't Rich, The dock owner wants to own the water and with people like Parsons he will probably start changing ramp fees that only the people well off can afford.they have put so many boat docks in places you can't even fish.
