Thanks for making this video. A makeup artist in India put a foundation on me that was at least 4 times lighter than my skin color in the name of making me look fairer on my wedding day. I had to wipe it off and do my own makeup for my wedding. Later I found out that the guy I married had told her to do that. In short, I am happily divorced now. :)

Good video! This obsession with fair skin must stop. I get a lot of patients who wish to change their skin colour. The worst part is parents bring along their children asking for fairer skin. Girls as young as 5 years old are made to feel their complexion is dark and are pushed into believing that only fair is beautiful. We have to work towards changing this mindset.

It breaks my heart to see how much this affects self-confidence of girls everywhere!! 'Skin Colour Shaming' needs to stop!! I see my friends being criticised for being "too pasty" or "too pale"!! I also see my friends being criticised for being "dark skinned"!! Please ladies, you really are beautiful just the way you are! Your skin colour doesn't define you, it's your kindness, your smile, your confidence, your own unique personality- THAT'S what makes you truly beautiful! I have a golden skin tone. In primary school, my school re-enacted a play on Aladdin and I'd auditioned for jasmine and got rejected despite acing the audition. They told me that "I did not look like the princess jasmine they were looking for and it was unfortunate". Eventually, they picked a girl who was very pale and applied a foundation shade that was like 5-6 shades darker than her skin tone. It affected me a lot as a kid and I literally used to scrub my skin off till it bled as I was so disgusted with my skin colour.

They would even say mean things like the milkman left me at the doorstep and my parents had to take me in.It was extremely hurtful growing up with this and to this day, it stays a part of me. I have heard that it's common for men to break up with their gf because she is dark, that's really sad. It is true fair skin is seen as beauty ideal in many parts of the world and darker people are made to feel inferior and ugly so parents try to make their children feel better. I think parents should just try to tell their kids they are lucky and perfect from the day they are born no matter what shade their skin is because it is 2016 and it is too pretty to focus on skin color. Everyone is blessed as long as they are healthy and happy, not just fair skinned people.

+Lisa Chen I think she means that it's not a permanent change. Whether you tan or whether you bleach, the melanin in your skin will always generate a new layer of skin in the shade God gave you. Tanning/bleaching is temporary. If you feel ugly because of the shade of your skin, whether pale or dark (I by NO means find Jovita dark considering how beautifully dark skin can be), you will NEVER be happy because the tan will fade and the bleach will darken as your new skin appears. Pale skin is beautiful. Olive skin is beautiful. Tan skin is beautiful. Brown skin is beautiful. Dark brown skin is beautiful. Self tanning hasn't had the same negative skin effects as bleaching has. Bleaching is a chemical alteration of the skin, whereas self tan is a protein dye (think food coloring) that adheres to the skin making it temporarily darker. Unless you are going to bathe in lemon juice, potatoes & tomatoes to lighten your skin, there is no SAFE way to lighten yourself several shades. Love yourself

Here's my story, my mom started to give me fair and lovely when I was in elementary. In addition, my mom gave me skin lightening bleach creams and skin lightening soaps. Everything she gave me irritated my skin, so I did not use it. My mom is obsessed about being light skinned and she wanted me to be light skinned as well. She did not want me to play outside because I became darker.
As a little girl, I always viewed myself as ugly because I was not light skinned. In my teens, watching Bollywood movies only validated, that light skinned girls were considered beautiful and Bollywood movies barely had dark skinned girls.
In my 20s , I accepted my skin color and am proud of it.
I would not change my skin tone. Many people have approached me and told me that I have a beautiful skin color and I am very lucky to have this skin color. Indians and Pakistanis need to stop obsessing over light skinned because not all of us are light. We come in all shades, shapes and size.

My best friend has a slightly dark skin tone. I do a bit of photography so I did a couple of little shoots with her. She looks gorgeous! Better than most fair skinned girls in front of the camera. Even otherwise, she is really pretty. She keeps comparing herself to other lighter skinned friends but I keep telling her that she looks prettier than so many of them. Because she really does. I have high standards for visual beauty and I think you are one of the most beautiful women I have seen on the internet, dark or not.

One thing I have noticed in this country is that majority of people who are darker, are generous and kind hearted and those fairer have a pride of skin consciously or unconsciously. People who are fairer can never know what it is like. While those who actually faces it know exactly what this video is about.
Never think you are accountable for an explanation to any one regarding your capabilities just because you are dark.

I remember when I was 5 years old, living in New Zealand. I had to go to an after school care while my parents worked seriously hard for us (typical migrant story). there was this one girl, one afternoon, who told me I eat dirt, I was made of dirt, that I was simply mud because I was brown. I was only 5 years old and I had no idea what the problem was!!! and then I grew up, people around me were tanning, my family was all "foshha"/fair and I had moved to Australia and my dark skin had become progressively darker. I was always reminded of how dark I was comparative to those around me, as if though I was less of a person for being darker skinned than all the pretty Bengali girls who could wear medium shade BB cream without a worry. I struggled to find good foundation in my skin tone that wasn't ridiculously expensive. I digress.
I read a poem by a friend a few years back, and she wrote that our skin is brown because gold flows through our veins, which was so... it was such a change to read after many, many years of loathing my darkness. anyway, this video... I'm not crying I promise.
thank you, you are the best. much love.

What does it mean to be a dark person in India? A country where people are obsessed with fairness, a land where black people are openly shown to be unattractive in mass media, in a culture where a ‘gori ladki’ as a wife is respected more than a caring and understanding woman..
Being a dark person from India I can sum up my 2 decades of existence in one word: hell.
From the earliest days that I can remember I have been called names by my classmates, too derogatory to even mention. My kin, my parents, and my grandparents all used to indirectly call me ugly.
Every time I visit someone they used to tell me that I got a bit ‘fairer’. Life was a living hell when people used to give me ‘tips’ to be ‘fair and beautiful’ every time I paid anyone a visit.
The mass media only added to my grief. Whenever I saw ads for cosmetic products like ‘fair and lovely’ and ‘fair and handsome’ a little part of me used to die and still does knowing the fact that I may never be like them.
In Indian television the humor stopped about being able to laugh and became more about laughing at the cost of others. The jokes that are shown is all about shaming: fat shaming, color shaming and worst of all jokes on handicapped people.
I can’t even imagine the toll this had on my mental development. I have reached a point where I can’t form any strong relationships, with my family or my friends. I have to cry myself to sleep almost every night, I have suicidal thoughts every now and then. I pretend to laugh on a joke in a movie but deep down I feel like crap. My low self esteem has taken me to a stage where I even refuse selfies with my friends. I despise my photographs. I have become a sociopath.
I feel only pity for myself but I know that no one is to blame for my misfortune. Maybe I am just unlucky to be born black.

This is soooo interesting. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and am a very pale redhead. In my teens it was considered ugly to be as white as I was, so I spent too many hours trying to tan. As we know now, that is very damaging for the skin, particularly if one is as naturally pale skinned as I was. It's bizarre what we are lead to believe is beautiful, when we should embrace whatever lovely skin tone God gave us. I now revel in my ultra-blinding white complexion, and am not embarrassed by it anymore.

What's strange is that the perception of dark and fair is different depending on the culture and community you are from. In my community you would not be considered dark. You would be viewed as having a medium skin tone. I actually had an argument with this person on youtube about people being tan in the West and fair in the East, she said it has the same effect and it is the same thing. I actually really like Indians with the rich chocolate reddish skin tones.

It is so true that fairness adverts give a very bad impression about dark skinned girls and boys and in a society like this, its amazing to have people who think like you. Down here in Sri Lanka, majority are dark skinned, I would say tan to be more precise. Specially those in the capital, Colombo are of a lighter tanish color. The view regarding tan skinned girls here has not been a very severe one.. but yet its true that it exists, specially you see how differently you are treated when you go to other countries, not joking, I am telling this through experience. she's actually right. and somali mother's do for a fact tell their kids to marry a light skin person so they can produce white grand kids. face it sweet, it is indeed a huge global problem. including Somalia.

Wow.. I didn't know that at all! I am from eritrea and many people in the horn of africa are VERY dark so I wouldn't think there was any colorism there. In my country people don't care that much about it, but obviously lighter skin is seen as better. My grandma is super light, like arabs and she thinks she is better because of it! lool.

this is very true. i understand what are u saying Jovita. i have heard things and experienced the dislike of many people because of my color at a very young age. i was very dark skinned, but as I grew up the skin tone has lightened about two shades. i could be around 5 or 6. Imagine the school going girls, in 8th or 9th standard calling a girl from 1st-grade 'KALI' in an insulting manner, in front of the whole school and bus, almost every day for a year until I decided to tell my mom one day. then my mom talked to those three girls, and then they stopped. i took so much time to tell my mom because being a child didn't know how to deal with this. I was way too sensitive girl and quiet and reserved. even though my parents tried to teach me that skin color isn't important at all because being intelligent is the best thing. and it helped me a lot, I studied and stood first in class. my grades caught the attention of other students and teachers and they started to like me......but there was one teacher who was mostly nice to me and liked me but she did pass comments about how I looked for three or four times. this really hurt. i couldn't get past that. i felt that even with grades I couldn't be in a society of fair people. my overthinking brain would nag me that people don't want to be friends with me, even though my best friend is very fair, and she never made me feel bad...for her the color didn't matter.... but... but... the thoughts that have been put in my mind for years, won't go away.. no matter what. every now and then I'd become obsessed with DIY to whiten my skin because I still feel the bias in people's minds how I look. i don't fit in the criteria they have in their mind because most of the time I observe others and find that people judge each other by how costly their clothes are...not by nature. but now I'm trying to love myself and standing up against this bias...it'll take time but I know I'll be stronger.

My Dad is Pakistani, very fair and my mom is African American, brown skinned. Some of his relatives teased him when he married her. Oh don't marry this black woman, your kids will be so dark. I've grown up in America and it took me a long time to see this ugly side of the culture. My parents sheltered me from it. I remember meeting some of my Pakistani relatives, and although no one said anything bad, no one ever said I was beautiful. Not to toot my own horn but I'm a good looking girl! Lol I get compliments all the time. And so it just stood out. I felt a little bad. It is so sad. I am a grown woman though, I'm over it. I already know that I am beautiful and not just because of my outward appearance. I cannot imagine how heartbreaking it is for a child to hear such things. Especially that you can't be successful in life! It makes me so angry! Unfortunately you can lighten your skin with bleach, although it's incredibly bad for it. I know many who do this.

I can completely relate to what ever you spoke in this video...I am a dark skinned girl ...most of my relatives always upset me all the time...they have nothing to say other than my looks... I got pcod and things got worst, I got pimples and gained weight which made me look uglier than before..I took medicines and the symptoms have kind of reduced, and now people tell that l look a lot more better than before...they think that by telling that they are trying to make me feel better but the reality is that they don't see anything other than my skin....

I remember how my family members wouldn't even let me go outside in the summer because I might "get TOO dark". It's absurd. I love my skin and I love it even more when it darkens. Thank you for this video, I will be sharing :)

A great way to help with uneven skin tone is to take oil and sugar and scrub your skin so it's an even tone.

The funniest thing is the olive and dusky skin tone is the most mimicked in the makeup industry as well.

I am from Guyana and my ancestors are Indian. So many people from my culture also believe that light skin is somehow more appealing. I am dark skin and I love my skin color. I remember growing up, family members always urged us to stay out of the sun like it was burn us. Now, I really enjoy the outdoors and I could really care less what anyone else thinks about my skin color. You rock!!

Sorry if you were put down for your skin being too dark. Your skin is very common in Indians though which is different from tan. But still very unique to your culture. Sad thing is, many brown people put each other down for their skin. I think people should embrace all skin colors from fair to dark. Not try to say which one is better. True, many people see fair skin as being better and more beautiful and fair skin is beautiful but we the only thing that matters is how we feel about our skin.

Im Indian and I totally feel u. My cousin used to tease me alot when I was in primary school and I had a very low self esteem. Until now people do still discriminate me because of my skin colour. I'm 22 and nowadays I get "compliments" from people saying "oh you are dark but sweet looking " or " you are a 'black' beauty". The point is I have never heard anyone saying to fair skinned girls " you are so fair skinned and so pretty or you are a white skinned beauty". I hate discrimination

love you for sharing this video....When I was young I was very much insecure about my skin color..Now, I am not :) I love my skin and I love how it looks....I can totally relate to all these that you said in this video..In India, ppl are obsessed with white..I recall an incident where in for a school/collg function girls who are medium toned like me were asked to stand in the back rows and fair kids were made to stand in the front row....That incident, as a kid really made me n my other frnds cry a lot....But, now, i really feel so good about my skin...and the photogenic part...I totally agree...I have the worst dark circles that i got as hereditary..Well, I can cover it up with word's best products now..I never feel insecure about my skin now... Nobody is perfect.... it's the mindset that ppl should change.,..Fair n Lovely should be banned...seriously...the ridiculous ads they make....and this whole matrimony fair/medium/dark category- OMG - it sucks..really!

Thank you for this video. As a dark skinned mallu girl, i was taunted for most of my growing up years and i learnt to love the skin i was in only when i went to the US to study in my 20's. While the taunting didn't stop me from achieving any of my dreams after that, it did make it hard for me to like the society and country i was raised in and I dont like going to Kerala because i dont know of any other way of protesting against this ridiculous bias especially considering how gorgeous dark skinned women look!
