- Most modern SUVs these days come with at least the option of 4WD, but most owners will never put this feature to use, and that's a shame. Thanks for watching and thanks for your feedback; we have been listening!
Just to clear up a few of the big queries we've found in the comments:
- We've chosen these SUVs because they're relatively new, so cars launched a while ago (Pajero Sport, Safari Storme, Gypsy etc) were not included (except the Thar, as it was the control car)
- We stuck to cars that claim to have some off-roading ability, so road-focused SUVs were left out
- We stuck to just one model per brand, so yes, cars like the big Range Rover and Wrangler didn't make it; sorry
- We really wanted the Force Gurkha. It would have fared very well. We asked Force Motors, but they didn't have a car to give us
- The Thar has a rear diff lock, our spec box says it does not - that's a mistake on our part; we're sorry

You could have used jeep wrangler instead of compus
I live in Liberia, Africa. Here 80% of the roads are muddy throughout the year. Ford Endeavour is the default choice of travel here. If you are in endeavour, you can drive through any terrain without any worry.
just looked it up, the earlier versions almost look like a land rover, that thing is sick!
But fortunar has got more capabilities for off roading

That monster was there for support if any of these cars get stuck. This is not at all a challenge for Thar.

Hexa was actually impressive being the fact that it's an MUV and competes with Innova. And thar is like Mahindra thar is like Maruti 800 you can just drive it without the fear of damaging it as it can be repaired without spending a fortune in comparison to other SUVs

Its a Suv comparisons so you have to take Tatas Safari strome which is a Suv,Not hexa because its afterall cross over.
Agreed, the Safari Storme would have fared better, as we mentioned in the video. But the Hexa is the more recent launch, and Tata has given it an off-road mode in the 4x4 Manual version, so we thought we'd give it a shot :)

Gavin D'souza Hello.. Do you think the fortuner is as capable as the endy in terms of off road? And people say it's over rated and over priced.. it doesn't have the advanced tech as in the endy & it's not as good to drive.. Heard that the auto gearbox in fortuner had falied in phillipines So can u please drop your opinion.. and is the fortuner worth buying ?

Hi Manu. We asked Force Motors for a Gurkha. Unfortunately they weren't able to give us one. Too bad; would have done well I think.

A good video from autocar! Fortuner and Endeavour show their real capabilities here! I think below the Prado (1cr) and LR Discovery (75L), the Fort and Endy are the most capable SUVs for going offroad.

You all can not imagine how mad I am at my father for buying the Fortuner instead of endeavour.
After-sale value and service were the 2 major reasons for my father's decision. Do you guys agree?
We have the top end fully accessorized one and it cost us 37-38 lacs with insurance(before prices went down) .
Nippun Dudeja see thats a mature choice as fortuner is known for reliability. Service costs are also low compared to Endeavour and yes its known car which is used by Most MLA and MPs in India so have the royal feeling of it

There is a reason why G class still follows 30 year old brick design. IT WORKS. It is the poshest and craziest SUV out there with exceptional road presence. Can't wait to see to the next generation G Class about to be unveiled shortly.

Why is there no pajero sport in this ? I mean this is an offroad test and pajero would beat the hell out of most of these cars.
Hey Mohit, we left it out because we decided to short-list only cars that had been launched in the last couple of years. If not, the list would have been endless.
Mitsubishi should launch the new Pajero Sport ASAP in India....
mitsubishi india is just so boring, like i don't get. Montero Sport ( in india it would be Pajero Sport) just demolishes the fortuner, 5-star safety rating and an all-around great car, definetely on the off-road side. they don't have any variety of cars in india, it just makes me mad haha
the montero sport (pajero sport in india) was launched in 2016 and a head-on rival to the fortuner, it might be better depends on experience with the vehicle.

This is not cool, You guys din’t feature Mitsubishi Pajero Sports Super Select 4x4 MT. Its a much capable off roader then Thar, Compass, Hexa & Endeavour. A performer at Low Range.
This is why autocar has been 1st in the heart of auto enthu peoplesss!!!! Very good episode.

Endeavour wins hands down in all areas compared to sluggish Fortuner. Fortuner is just for the majestic looks and highway cruising and offcourse the reliability of Toyota. Endeavour has the hardrock body and hardware to crush any kinda offroad trials. Watch the offroad comparo of Endeavour vs LC Prado . It's almost equivalent to prado in terms of offroading , cruising , drivability and the only diff was price. Endeavour is way ahead of the competition and v can say it has come from the future :P :P
A P it's not reliable and efficiency very low.. indian customers worry a lot about life of vehicle. and mileage.

Hi Kaviamudhan! We thought about bringing the Wrangler in, but we decided to keep it to one SUV per manufacturer and the Compass was the new kid on the block that needed to prove itself. No doubt the Wrangler would have sailed through it.

Now that's a level I along side with a lot of automobile lovers expect Autocar India to be. In my opinion the Ford Endeavor is the best 'value for money' off-roader as it's not shit expensive and it did complete all the challenges with ease as well as Toyota Fortuna but even Autocar India agreed in a comparison the Ford Endeavor shines over the Toyota Fortuna.

It shows how the Ladder on frame chassis is effective in offroad situations. Best all-round is definitely the Fortuner, it proves itself , and second by Endeavour which is a little more inclined to be a luxury car too.
Its surprising that Hexa ,compass, etc could do some off roading.
Nice review and the other 4 wheel drive Cars like Tiguan, XUV 500 , Safari, Scorpio should also have added little more oomph.
XUV 500 seems a very VFM cum affordable Everyday car cum Offroader.

Excellent video guys.. I've even started to think Why spending so much money for Discovery Sport (even Compass included) and other expensive vehicles believing that they're excellent off-roaders. Trust me, just the second b4 watching this video I had been thinking Compass and Discovery Sport has the same extraordinary off-roading capabilities like what we see from their other bigger brothers. This video seriously opened my eyes just b4 I sign my cheque.
All of them performed well...Hats off to all the SUVs...

The conditions aren't right, i mean it has to remain the same for all the vehicles. The first couple of vehicles will easily manage that climb but with every climb, the ramp becomes slipper and slipper.
