She attained most of her fame and acclaim in California, where she hooked up with Graham Nash (of CSNY and the Hollies) at least for a little while. He abused her, so they parted company. Joni Mitchell is one of the greatest artist of the last decades, not only she have a unique and beautiful voice but she's a really great song writer, she have a unique way to express simply the things that every human feel, based on her own reality....no doubt for me that she's the greatest Canadian artist of all time (with Leonard Cohen)....If you want to know more about her you should give a try to the albums ¨Blue¨ (1971) and ¨Hejira¨ (1976)....I would suggest you the song ¨River¨ from Blue czcams.com/video/3NH-ctddY9o/video.html and the song Amelia from ¨Hejira¨ czcams.com/video/nxMwGTQ1bzU/video.html. (the live version from a 1979 concert with two greats musicians, Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny)....the voice and the music are great, but with Joni Mitchell you have to listen to the words. Have a good day, from a French speaking guy in Montréal.

At that point she was introducing jazz elements into her music, she'd drift further in that direction on her next few albums.
I like how she changes the 1st line of each verse, each starts with "Help me I think I'm falling" 1. "in love again", 2. "in love too fast" and 3. "in love with you." She goes from the general to the specific.

It was said by many women entertainer's who loved Joni's music but the degree of difficulty of her tuning and playing the guitar and singing her songs at the same time were too high. As testament to that I remember seeing alot of them only holding a microphone on TV's Variety Shows of those days. Songstress Emilou Harris said it flat out best, "The only way we could play any Joni Mitchell songs on the guitar and sing it at the same time...was to play the guitar and sing her songs at the same time, by doing it our own way!" Ha- ha ha, and with that good sir thanks for your grand pick in Joni Mitchell!!! Stay groovy!

Joni surrounded herself with great jazz musicians like Jaco Pastorius and embraced jazz in an inventive and sometimes avant-garde way with her albums, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Mingus and many of her later recordings. You should listen to these to see how she progressed as a musician and songwriter.
