One of the greatest voices ever…Now you know why she is called “Songbird “
I remember hearing this song for the first time in 1976, this was Deniece's first hit. Deniece Williams got her big break in the 70's singing backup for Stevie Wonder.
My best friend got the "This Is Niecy" album when it was released in 1976. We were 13-14 at the time and listened to "Free" repeatedly! Her voice was beautiful, and the song was so pretty. Still is. In response to your question, Maurice White (of Earth Wind & Fire) and Charles Stepney produced this song.
Denise is up there with the best female vocalists. She has done work with Stevie Wonder and also the amazing Minnie Ripperton. Please react to Denise’s song “ It’s Your Conscience “ . “Free” was produced by the Great Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire, that probably explains the familiar sound you hear.

Free was the lead single from Deniece Williams 1976 album: This Is Niecy. It was written by Deniece Williams, Hank Redd, Nathan Watts and Susaye Greene. It was produced by Maurice White (from Earth Wind And Fire) and Charles Stepney. The song reached #2 on the R&B chart and #25 on the Hot 100. They don't call Deniece Williams "Songbird" 🎶🐦 for nothing. It may sound familiar because this song has been sampled by a lot of artists. Yes, that was a trumpet sound. The song: Free, sounds a lot like an Earth Wind & Fire type of song to me- an extra chilly most vibe.
