    ____
"Silly" is a song written by Fritz Baskett, Clarence McDonald and Deniece Williams and performed by Williams. The soulful ballad was released off Williams' My Melody album in 1981 and became the most successful track off the album reaching as high as number fifty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming an even bigger success on the R&B chart where it peaked at number eleven. It has since gone on to become one of Williams' most requested songs over a career that has spanned over thirty years. The song featured production by Williams and respected Philly soul producer Thom Bell. The song was recorded at Philadelphia's acclaimed Sigma Sound Studios. The song would be later covered by singer Taral Hicks nearly two decades later in 1997 and was released as the second single off Hicks' debut album becoming a hit on the R&B chart.
One of Williams' influences, Patti LaBelle, later recorded the song for her 2005 album, Classic Moments. Singer Monica later sampled the instrumental intro and bridge of the song for her number-one R&B hit, "Everything to Me" and also interpolated Williams' ending high notes at the end of the song. Monica and Williams sang "Everything to Me" and "Silly" respectively together at the BET Awards in 2010. The-Dream also sampled the song for his song "Silly", which featured Casha, on his free mixtape 1977.

Please, Please ‼️ don't sleep on Deniece Williams. That heavenly voice, the range. The lady can SANG. Her vocals are so soft, easy and innocent in the beginning, then her vocals start soaring up telling you why she feels so Silly.

At 61 years old, I’ve always said back then that this lady has the sweetest voice in music, I could listen to Neicy all day! She is a soul R&B legend! When she was paired with music producer Thom Bell it was a match made in musical heaven! Her sweet voice combined with Thom’s beautiful lyrics, melodies and lush arrangements were perfection!

I actually wasn't sure you'd like this pick, Empress, but looks like you really get why it is so special! I also love how the song has such a quiet, sparse quality, with her voice out front, almost Acapella, to tell the sweet story of longing and unrequited love! Pure 70 🔥🔥🔥!

Glad you've found one of the great, sweet voices of the late 70's, early 80's. Her top end is just terrific. Try her duet with Johnny Mathis, "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late", and her great solo hit, "Black Butterfly". What I think was really smart was how the writer and producer decided to do this in 3/4 waltz time in order to give it that danceable yet intimate feel. Brilliant.

Although I could reminisce all day about what slow grooves like this mean to someone like myself who came of age when this came out, I’m fascinated by Empress’s reaction to this because as she said she recognizes this from a “sample”. Being in my 50’s and remembering when every party ended with the lights turned down and a slow drag😇 I’m interested in how the music over the last say 10 to 15 years affects interactions and relationships 🤔

....NIECY!??? ...nie-CY!?? ..***DENIECE WILLIAMS TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ...it's time to get silly.......
    - Deniece was at a crossroads at this time; She was leaving the 'Disco Diva' moniker behind (she had a #1 Disco hit in 1979 with "I've Got The Next Dance"), and doing more 'contemporary' R&B....then, she came across legendary Producer Thom Bell (The Spinners, The Stylistics), and asked him to produce her 1981 LP, "My Melody"....
...Oh, did her label (Columbia / Sony) have a PRAH-BLEM with it! ...they thought Thom's sound was 'too Old' for the 'new' 80's, and was against it.... 'Niecy preserved, and the Album was done with him....the singles, "What Two Can Do" & "It's Your Conscience" did middling to poor, and the record label was gonna drop the project...
-...of COURSE, of course!! ...a Philly DJ played the WHOLE Album on the Radio, and "Silly" blew the phone-lines UP! ...It did SO well in popularity, the label had to rush-release the single, to match up with the airplay it was getting!!
    - ...It peaked at #11 R&B Sept., 1981, and is a 'Quiet Storm' CLASSIC!! ....Deniece did even better on the next LP; her cover of "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" was a HUGE R&B / Pop hit, and One of the Top 10 tunes of 1982!!
..'Niecy also gave a little ditty to a Soundtrack once, too...sumpthin' 'bout, '....hearing it for The Boy'!? ((🤔))
