Scott, I first found you a couple of years ago and immediately loved your innovation with the half dissolved "Marty McFly" fretboard cam as well as your approachable style. I think its brilliant enough allowing us to see behind the hands but this new setup you have now is AMAZING!! Well, its new to me. Your ability to live switch all the cameras and layer the image is superb. Really excellent tools properly executed. I hope you patent that software somehow and make enough money to buy a real 58 LP! (If you're into that sort of thing) These two vids have all that PLUS inspiration to just write music, even in little bits to take the pressure off "writing a good song" start to finish. Would be awesome to have a simple app with the circle-shape. Set the rootnote and have the microphone listen to what your playing, just to fiddle arround and get an understanding of what is going on

Cool! Maybe you could put an octave effect in your guitar to teach about bass lines in the guitar camera. It’s not a perfect bass sound but it could do the trick. Nice content!

Gotta get on the next live one - such a healthy chat and excellent topics! As for the perfectionism/fear question, a little analogy maybe? Did you ever build legos as a kid? Did you ever go through the feeling when you're following along with an instruction book/kit and you realize you're missing a piece and suddenly the whole plan and project goes to shit? What about when you're just sitting in front of a big box of mixed up pieces, and you're like "that one's cool, I don't know what I'm building yet, but let's see what happens" and eventually you look at the thing, and it's weird and not exactly finished but not exactly dysfunctional, and you're just really proud of it because it's yours and you enjoyed the process of building it piece by piece? I think that's Scott's approach to music here. The theory is your framework to play and think as loosely as possible without getting frustrated, and with each building block you add, your brain will probably think of something cool to throw on top of it. Another great recommendation: watch that Beatles documentary, "Get Back." It was a revelation in the songwriting process for me and demystified a lot of things.
Yeah. It's one thing if you're building a lego creation for a competition, but it's another thing entirely to explore which parts go together in fun ways. You need to do a lot of exploring to get good at writing music

Very good examples, great video. But you showed how to choose a chord, but what about the structures? I mean intro, verse, chorus, beidge, break, drop, breakdown and so on...
Choosing 3-4 chords is not such a difficult matter, but how to connect it with the next part? How can I make a full-fledged track out of this?
The more you do the basics like this, the easier it is to figure out that stuff. I think my more recent writing stream shows a more complete structure and how I got there!

Ok, so I like the idea of tossing in that e7 In the Cord progression sounds nice. So, I've been coming up with ideas for years, but really didn't know what I was doing. Just playing by ear and coming up with ideas for songs. Eight years ago I was noodling and came up with a i vii vi vii Cord progression, bm. I had no idea what a cord progression even was at the time. I do now in part because of you and studying the circle of fifths. Anyway my girlfriend at the time was blown away by what I played. I came up with really good lyrics, immediately, It just came right out. Problem is, I got stuck. Now, I'm wanting to finish the song. My question is this. I'm considering tossing a g7 into the mix. Why does it sound so dramatically different, when played in different positions. I tried the first position and the 7th, they don't even sound like the same cord. I'm confused because I don't notice that big of a difference between an A Cord say at the second fret and an A cord played at the fifth. Just wondering. Ok I might have asked to early, lol. You explained it. Its a different voicing. Thanks again, your very helpful.

I have this melody in my head but I'm having a hard time figuring out what chord to put it over. How do you figure out what chord go over it? Is it just whatever chord has at least one note you are singing? I know there's automatic software that let you sing and it puts the right chord over it automatically, but would like to know how it worked.
That is a great start. If you’re jumping from one note to the next, those could be different chords OR two notes from the same chord. If you’re walking through the scale (like C D E) you could just play a C chord which will sound good on the C and E, and create mild tension going through D

Funnily enough, there kind of were Major Key and Minor Key people lol. The modes are named after regions of the ancient Mediterranean. The jealousy of the Aeolian people about the Ionian people's V7 chord, no, you're right, that probably didn't happen. I love that anthropological analogy, though.
