McLaren 570S Spider - Can it be as good as they say ?!

  • McLaren invited me to their Roadshow at Goodwood to drive the much talked about 570S Spider. Could it really be as good as everyone says it is ? Well I bring you along for the ride to find out.
    The numbers on paper are impressive enough. 570PS, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and 195mph with the roof down ! The question for me is...just how is it to drive ?
    A huge thanks to McLaren for the invite to this very special day. I've waited a long time to drive my first McLaren on the road. They say you should never meet your heroes as they will only disappoint...I am happy to report on this occasion that is a load of rubbish !

    you are scoring by the fact that you are without pretense ....you can see the joy on your face face.... you can't believe your luck and that's what we would all feel like doing the same thing so we live vicariously through you....You present exceptionally well and it's so nice to see that you are not complacent or nonchalant about the whole thing ....I hope you gain more traction....keep your enthusiasm up that is your USP...

    Ive been watching you for quite a few months now. You're good & the invitation is testament to your growing channel. I would however like to hear some of the things that arent so great about the cars you get to drive as nothing is perfect and it would good to hear where these brands have failed on, not done such a great job compared to its competitor, what could be improved, etc. I know you mentioned about being a new channel, but its not what you say, its how you say it. You have a range of experiences in different cars now that should be getting compared to each other regarding who's stepping up their game and who's just relying on their name. Just a thought. It would also be good to see the fatest versions of everyday cars and how they compare with each other. Keep up the good work though.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 6 lety +2

      Thanks for the comment. Interestingly, I did actually do a piece to camera in the car about being criticised for not saying negative things about the cars I get to drive. I was struggling with the film being too long so I edited it out. I do try and be fair whilst striking the balance of building relationships with brands.
      For example, in my recent RS7 review I did say I didn't think the gearbox was quick enough. I my Type R review I said it didn't make enough noise. I must say that the 570S is very difficult to fault, it really is very good. Maybe the only thing is getting on and out is a bit tricky as it has large sills.
      I will take you comments on-board though and I'm glad you enjoyed my review. Cheers PETER

Living close to Manchester McLaren in Knutsford I see a lot on the local roads, the 570S Spider is by far the best looking of the current model line up; all proportions feel just right. I tested the 570S immediately after a 458 spider, and it was a fascinating comparison. McLaren deserve a big pat on the back to have become a true competitor for Ferrari in such a short time. The Mclaren gearbox was undoubtedly better in use than the Ferrari equivalent and the ride in the 570S was better over the usually bad british road surfaces. I preferred the non turbo Ferrari engine because the McLaren had a bit of turbo lag and the unnecessary exhaust pops and bangs always irritate. Internally the Macca instrumentation was a fascinating piece of modern technology, the seats were comfortable and the car was a generally nice place to be. But somehow, and I would have difficulty saying why, the McLaren interior wasnt as special as the Ferrari. And in a way that sums up the overall experience. The British car is every bit as good a piece oif enginerring as the Ferrari but simply not as special. Not for me, anyway.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 6 lety

      Hi Howard, really interesting to here you comments and I totally get them. I actually drove both cars back to back at a Supercar day but drove the Ferrari first. I was amazed by the 458s steering ! They are both very special cars for different reasons.

  • @alanbutterfield8057

    Hi Peter, the can be no doubt this is a great car but it comes across in this video the is a computer always calculating your input and the computer saves you. So the question I have do you feel this car dose all the work and the guy behind the wheel just points and and hits the loud pedal. ?
    If this is true and I’m correct then why buy this car when you can have the same fun in. Audi R8 v10+ and save a few quid at the same time. Peter don’t get me wrong it’s a great car but I’m just not 100% sold on this I think I would have more fun in a Ferrari 488GTB they let’s you make mistakes but will save you if need be and not interfere with the whole driving experience as ever a great video Best wishes Alan B..

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Alan. To some extent you are right. In the driving modes I was using the car is there helping you not make a mistake. That doesn't detract from the driving enjoyment, in fact for me it adds to it as you can push on in confidence. If you are a more experience driver or are on a track then there are still the Sport Traction and Traction Control Off setting to play with. You are then on your own...I didn't play with those.
      I have driven and R8 V10 Plus on the road and it too is a very special car and will look after you. It is Quattro and has lots of systems to help. Not driven the 488 but I am sure it will be similar. The 570S is just so useable in everyday conditions but you still have to be able to drive ;-)

    570S isn't the best circuit car, when you back to back test it against say a 675Lt the 570 feels very unstable at speed but strangely quicker in a straight line thanks to Aero or the lack of it.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 6 lety

      I am sure there are better cars out there. The 675LT is designed as a track focussed car so it doesn't surprise me that it is better on a track. Sadly, I've not driven one yet :-( The 570S is a stunning all-round package and even more impressive when you consider it is the 'entry level' McLaren after to 540 !

    • @K2edg
      @K2edg Před 6 lety

      IMHO you want to skip the LT for the 720s, for the money it's hands down the best all rounder (and not just in the current Mclaren range) don't forget Mclaren haven't changed the tub since the 12c so the 720s is the first new platform and honestly you can really tell.

      Check the reality:
      The Meaning of Nirvana
      Literally speaking, Nirvana means blowing out or putting out or extinguishing a lamp or fire.
      It was the tradition in ancient India to put out the domestic fires before one began the journey of renunciation and asceticism (sanyasa).
      It signaled the end of worldly life and the beginning of a life of renunciation, non-seeking and non-striving.
      Nirvana also means extinction, the absolute and final extinction or annihilation of all desires, individuality and attachment.
      According to Buddhism, as the Buddha preached it originally in India, beings come into existence from nowhere, due to the aggregation of things and elements. No one creates them. They just happen to fall into place through a mysterious binding process and lo you have a phenomenal universe full of animate and inanimate objects. Thus existence, beingness, personality manifests from a state of emptiness (sunya) or non-existence or nothingness through a process of aggregations.
      Thus we have three fundamental views of Nirvana.
      1. Nirvana - Emptiness, nothingness, a state of non-becoming and non-beingness.
      2. Nirvana - An eternal and independent state of non-becoming and non-beingness.
      3. Nirvana - An independent, lonely and liberated state of non-becoming and non-beingness.
