    It’s a regular season award. Voting was done before the playoffs. Binnington could have had 16 shutouts with his 16 wins and he would still lose this award. He may of carried his team to a playoff spot but he didn’t play a full season. Congrats Pettersson! Well deserved

      @Twilitblack Před 5 lety +5

      I mean I had my share of arguing with people that say that Binnington was gonna win it. And even then those fans should be happy that Binnington won something far more lustrous than a Calder trophy: the Stanley Cup in his first NHL year. Kinda shocked that Binnington didn't win Conn Smythe though but regardless, the Calder is well deserved for Petey and congrats to him!

    • @Oboewan
      @Oboewan Před 5 lety +4

      iPermanently Yea, it’s a regular season award. Binnington was pretty much the Blues even made it to cup contention. He boosted the Blues to get out of last place. But, yea, I agree Binnington should be happy with his Stanley Cup, something that Pettersson won’t get unless he leaves Vancouver.

    • @MrSupahLMFAO
      @MrSupahLMFAO Před 5 lety +11

      I mean Binnington had a team that was expected to win the cup since last summer. The team just underachieved until Binnington and new head coach came in. Meanwhile Pettersson had to carry a team that was suppose to be dead last this year and somehow Canucks barely missed the playoffs. Don't forget fatigue also affects the stats. Since Pettersson played more which would affect his body, it's pretty good that he managed to put up those points, while Binnington only played 32 games which means he's still has a fresh feeling on his body. If Binnington had played another 20 games in the regular season while still manage to hold up good stats as he does now, then he might've won it.

    • @robins5798
      @robins5798 Před 5 lety +8

      @@Twilitblack A .914 save percentage is one of the worst numbers for a cup winning goalie since the early 90's and not really Conn Smythe numbers. Binnington was clutch in key games but overall in the playoffs he only needed to be solid enough for the Blues to win, much like Antti Niemi for Chicago in 2010. Seriously, I can't wait until this Binnington mass hysteria disappears. Soon people will want him run for president.

      At age 20, in his rookie year, he is already the best Swedish forward in the NHL. Imagine how good he will be when he matures and gains some weight. Elias is the best Swedish forward to come to the NHL since Peter Forsberg. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have Petey than Dahlin. I'm sure Dahlin will be a superstar himself, he'll win some Norris trophies. Dominate the NHL for years. But Pettersson is going to be a Top 5 player in the NHL for an extremely long time. I see him as a consistent 100+ point player all through his mid 20's and early 30's. That's tough to match. He'll end his career as one of the greats, and will replace Forsberg as the 'King of Hockey' in Sweden.

    Surprised that Binnington didn’t win Rookie of the year

    • @MrSupahLMFAO
      @MrSupahLMFAO Před 5 lety +6

      @@thosetwodudes The better question is, who do you need to replace an abysmal Jake Allen. Replacing Allen? It isn't exactly an amazing feat. It also helps to replace the coach, having other players perform as they should and getting a system that works for everybody.
      But I guess the rest of the team had nothing to do with it... you have to remember this is a team game. To completely neglect what Pettersson did on a garbage team as a kid, is nothing compared to what Binnington did as a 26 year old on an accomplished roster. Come on.

      What about the coach? Maybe they underperformed before the coach and not because of the goalie? Maybe every goalie can have nice stats if they dont even play HALF THE SEASON? If thats how easy its gonna be to win it as a goalie why even bother with 82 games, why not just cut it down to 42 and be done with it, will make the goalies look better than they really are. Compare that to a guy that used to play 52 games in a league with less skill than NHL and coming to a league doing more than okay in 70 games, carrying a team that isnt even subpar and almost dominating.
      Yeah, easy win for Binnington cause he didnt have to bother about that or being taken care of cause the coach took care of the defensive side first when he arrived. NOT!

And don't bother with the "didn't play a full season" excuse...extrapolate his record to a full 82 games and Binnington goes 65-14-3. Plus, the NHL itself is ignorant for only counting regular season performance. Similar parallel arguements apply to why Berube should have been the hands-down choice for Coach of the Year.
