If Ren was in a happy place the night he wrote this 2 yrs back, then we would be listening to a happy tune. He wasn't, so we aren't. Ren never wrote these songs for release...they were his therapy. It's special that we get to see them revealed, and it certainly shines a light on the dark that many people face, and the feelings of destroying everything around them. The material he's currently working on will of course be very different, but with Ren I think you need to be able to accept the dark and the light.....it's what makes him an independant artist, where he has no label telling him to write songs to a formula. Personally I'm stunned by the amount of music he's created before and during his treatment in Canada.

I got that in Masochist (someone who intentionally hurts themself) that Ren is furious he has to kill off all of the things he loves due to his health. He never meant “kill” literally. The things he’s killing are the things he loves and he was angry death would take it all from him and he’s pissed. He is only hurting himself.
I remember back in the day, They Might Be Giants had this phone number where you could call and get an answering machine. They would update everyday with a new song. That’s kind of what Ren feels like with all these releases.
Yeah, I think I prefer this way over hearing like 70% of an album's songs for the first time all at once when the album drops. Time to digest each one individually and hear what others think of it!

The best thing about Ren is he's not a version of anything else. He is Ren, and that is more than enough to simply Cherish.
It took a few hours to percolate but I'm totally on board with this track now. Ren always gets me sooner or later 🤦♀🤣He doesn't shy away from expressing the whole gamut of human emotion. He's the essence of punk, writes what he wants and doesn't let anyone tell him what to do.

Hey Ren. You may never see this. I'm a military member. I found you a couple weeks ago and your song “Hi Ren” has became an almost comfort song. I have gone through a lot from being in service. I had doubts my whole life about me and my strengths and my capabilities as a person, a human, and the military can be rough on you. I had people who killed themselves, the hatred and jokes placed on me. It made me emotionally distraught. Everything from my childhood to my adult life now. I was the weird kid, the bullied kid. I ended up with anger issues and anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I coped poorly with the stuff. I felt alone. I ended up going to a therapist a year or so ago that I continue to do once in a while. And that journey of me fixing my problems, that may be worse than I'm aware I'm not sure, played in my head listening to that song. Seeing someone struggling with similar thoughts in such a unique and beautifully done way like you did. It's sheer badassery. You know this probably, but sharing your stories, your life, your thoughts. You're saving people. You have my respect and my support Ren.

I found "Hi Ren" tonight and it's easily the best, most well-performed, beautiful and pieces of art in modern history. I listened to it multiple times in a row, finally time to see what else Ren has done and THEN I FIND THIS FUCKING BANGER? Yeah, can already tell I'm looking at one of the most talented humans to have lived so far.

I am a grown up enough to accept if not every song is for me. This one missed me personally, but that says nothing about its quality. I am still super hyped for the album to come out, ordered it on CD and digital as well. I will wait for some reaction videos to see some other perspectives, help me walk around it, not just the point of view where I am right now :)

And I love the themes it plays with, its place in the compilation of expression, and what it's offering everyone else. There are so many others I can enjoy and am on my way to do just that!
This one and love music 4 didn't do it for me but I still think they are well done. Just not my cup of tea. I am really looking forward to anything he's written since hi Ren. I think the timing of his come up and what he had prepared already was such a contrast to how the majority discovered him musically. That being said it's amazing how open minded most have been and even if the recent releases aren't the epic next level bardcore type stuff, dude puts out so much good music of all types. I find it really refreshing never knowing what the next drop is gonna sound like.

The agression and delivery in the last verse is 🔥🔥🔥. There are always songs that get better as you listen a few times, but they usually peak out after 3-4 listens. This one has a very high peak I think.

Okay, I feel like everyone is talking about the lyrics and the meaning behind them, but seriously. THE PRODUCTION. The BEAT. Oh my GOD. It’s so WEIRD. I love your choice of beats and how you alter your flow to fit the nuances in each of them. All of those funky synth sounds and the subtle background crowd noises add so much atmosphere to this track. The snares and cymbals are PERFECT for this too - so abrasive, it totally gives me Beastie Boys vibes. I’d love to hear this as an instrumental. This is probably my favorite beat you’ve released.
Did you produce this yourself? I need to know. I have a desperate need to know more about how you produce your stuff. I would absolutely pay for a membership for your channel if it would allow you to do “breakdown” streams where you go into the nitty gritty of how you craft your songs.

I saw some hate in the chat on this one (which is expected with any artistic expression). And I gotta say, this song is absolutely fuckin fire. This song is the dark side getting a chance to spit it's truth. Everyone has a dark and a light (i.e. Hi Ren) and both need time out front.

What I find so cool about this track is that on the surface it is so loco and dark, while at the same time there is a reference to Zen Buddhism.
The Chinese Zen master Linji of Zen Buddhism says If you meet your parents, kill them! If you meet the patriarchs, kill them! If you meet the Buddha, kill him!
Which roughly means that you must break down all illusions, be in the present and drop attachments to the past and future. In this way one achieves nirvana, which Ren also refers to.
Well at least that's my interpretation haha!

It was really interesting to hear Ren talking about this on the Zach Sang Show recently. He talked about the concept of samsara and how the nature of his illness caused him to question the attachments we have to everything. The commenter who mentioned the Buddhist perspective was spot on, it seems. A lot of people reacted to this song with fear or concern, and others jumped to Ren's defence saying we have to accept the dark as well as the light, but there are much deeper layers. Personally I love it, it's an absolute banger as well :D

When I saw the name of this song on the album tracklist, I knew it was going to be raw, definitely coming from a place of deep hurt, and the self-sabotage that can often come with that.
I know someone else has already said this but I think it merits being repeated again: thank you for making me feel less alone, for normalizing the deep dark and often twisted places we go to when the pain is too much to handle and MUST be expressed or else we lose burning ourselves to the ground, from the inside out.
At least, that is how it is for me. The extreme hurt, furious anger, and intense frustration must be heard. Be let out. In order for ME to live, to bring peace to my mind and try to move on. But of course, the best way to do that is to alchemize it into something that won't hurt yourself or others, like art. This song is a much needed cathartic release. It is therapeutic.

Surprisingly, because I have always been more inclined to other styles of music, I LOVED this song. The beat is fire and the overall message is very powerful. For me it's about liberation, self-empowerment and "awakening"; it's also raw and nasty, while also deeply philosophical. These contrasts are life itself and once again Ren manages to deliver this message in a creative, surprising and passionate way. It’s great. Thanks, Ren, for this one!
