  • Is it too late to start a filmmaking CZcams channel in 2023? If you look around the internet long enough you’re going to find lots of people telling you it’s too late to start, or that you should find another niche. But I disagree - and in this video I’m going to get into why.

    What I appreciate about this video is that you're saying out loud the you don't want to be a full-time CZcamsr. I too have lots of opinions and get a bit bored with seeing the same things regurgitated by the same circle of creators. I would much rather see what working filmmakers and industry folks are doing behind the scenes and learn from them. I was just at a Festival and got so much more out of conversations with working pros.

    Luc, perhaps the biggest thing I'm interested in knowing is how you made peace with the idea of being on camera instead of being behind it. I don't mean the act of being filmed, per se....I'm used to that. I mean the feeling of vulnerability or discomfort that comes from now being a growing 'influencer' with the public eye now on you regularly, even in a modest way? I'm making assumptions, but you don't strike me as someone who has always wanted to be under the spotlight. Any advice, for someone who understands the potential and logic of making a CZcams channel...but who is struggling to make peace with putting myself out there, on camera, and therefore at the mercy of the internet? "F*ck the hatez" / YOLO is all well and good, but frustratingly doesn't quite do enough to make me take the plunge.

    • @LucForsyth
      @LucForsyth  Před rokem +2

      Oh definitely not, I hated being on camera and still find it weird. I just locked myself into a weekly publishing schedule and made sure to upload no matter what, and eventually found a way to be somewhat at peace with it. Scripting helps a lot as I'm useless as just rambling to camera, doesn't work for me at all. It was actually easier in the beginning when no one was watching, but then I was really bad at it. Now that I have a small audience and people are actually paying attention, there's more stress, but I'm a little better so it all evens out. The key is remembering that no one really cares what you're doing, they're too busy worrying about their own lives, and any real haters out there are bridge trolls. Honestly in nearly 100 videos I haven't gotten a single real hater. People have disagreed with me, and that's totally cool, but I can't really think of a single person who's been actually mean/hateful. If you can find a single truly hurtful comment on my channel (I've never deleted anything), I'd be surprised. It only works with consistency, so forcing yourself to just keep going is the only way to get better, which will bring more people. By the time any significant number of people is watching, you'll have improved and the cycle will repeat. Talk to me again if I ever get a truly large audience on here, but at the moment I've found CZcams a largely supportive community and I've come to actually like the process. Not the recording necessarily, but the act of writing, making and publishing has been great for me. Commit to 50 videos and I promise you'll get used to it.

    My path has been similar to yours, but in a non-film industry. The real payoff is in promotion for your "other" business. With a similar subscriber base to you, I get more work offers than I can handle so I get to work on the ones that are interesting, and interesting jobs generate more ideas for interesting content. It works for my clients because their projects get some exposure and they contribute to educating the next generation of geologists. I don't do sponsorship deals and the ad revenue is trivial, but my linked paid channel with extended videos generates enough to pay for my mid level camera gear.

    Great video as always Luc! Your videos inspired me to start creating videos for my CZcams channel again. I probably watch more CZcams than traditional media and want to start to give back to the community that I've learned so much from.
    Getting back into creating content has definitely helped with my craft (you can never have too many hours behind the camera), but getting into a consistent rhythm has definitely been a bit of a challenge for me. I really like the system that you've developed to create your videos for your channel. I've tried to batch record my videos in the past, but my piece to cameras always take so much more time as I fumble my way through my script, so I only ever really get through one piece to camera in any one session haha.
    Like navigating through the industry as a freelance dop many years ago, I'm looking forward to seeing where creating for CZcams takes me. Thanks for creating videos like this as it's never too late to start creating.

  • @georgekamenov_
    @georgekamenov_ Před rokem +4

    Hey Luc, first of all, great video and breakdown of your CZcams workflow. Very insightful and interesting to see how you do things. That being said, I personally fundamentally disagree with the core message of this. As a filmmaker you absolutely do not "NEED" a channel. I get that you were going for a motivational video to push those filmmakers who WANT to start a channel but NEED isn't the same as WANT. Regardless of your positive experience and the benefits you've been able to get from having a channel, it is a very slippery slope telling people they also need to put in the time and effort into the same thing. This video kind of really ignores the fact that not EVERY filmmaker will have the same goals or interests with their work as yours. Furthermore, in a world where being a creator is becoming more and more popular as a career choice, the last thing a lot of people need is someone telling them they need to be doing something that they're not yet and adding yet another thing to worry about missing out on. I myself am a filmmaker who has a channel and agree that it's something that was right for me, but I would only ever recommend it to others if I know they're on the fence about it. I also understand that you're playing the CZcams game with the titles but you should really consider that now, with a bit of a larger audience, your content can have just as much of a negative impact on someone who's already struggling to get their filmmaking career going by giving them one more thing they think they have to get started with and dedicate their time to. Don't mean to be rude or anything, I just think there's a better way to convey your message while taking into account multiple points of view different than your own.

    • @scottsfreelunch
      @scottsfreelunch Před rokem +1

      I guess I didn't get the same takeaway on the emphasis on the NEED part of the equation. I read it more as a call to action for those aspiring filmmakers. I tend to agree that any aspiring filmmaker should start a channel for the pure reason of practice. The more you're filming, the more experience you get and the more chance you get to tell a story. Taking the time to do the many things you would do on maybe a larger scale for a bigger production, but doing it on a budget will help you in the long run, i.e. setting up your shoots, committing to deadlines, learning small tricks to make your time more efficient, etc.
      If you aren't able to do it on a smaller scale, there are some hard truths that we have to ask ourselves at times. We have the same struggles in putting our work out there for all to see with maybe a more niche demographic, but how do you translate that to a self-sustaining system that can pay for the cost of running the channel without losing the integrity of the intention behind the project. We hope to learn more as we go, but I think it's great to learn these lessons on the smaller scale now before a bunch of subscribers or bigger project we might come into so we can look back and lean back on these lessons.

      I think that is a good point, and it can be a bit overwhelming starting out as a solo filmmaker with all of the technical and creative aspects to master, without having FOMO for not having a CZcams channel. I think that Luc probably has good intentions though and has created a useful video so I will certainly continue to watch his content.

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_ Před rokem +1

      @@scottsfreelunch That isn't the point though. There are a lot of other ways to practice and learn the skills you listed out that don't need to be related to the stress of running a channel. Because while I agree it gives you a platform to practice on, take it from someone who's recently experienced decent growth on their channel, that it is far from being something everyone is going to find works for them. Much like everything else in life, this isn't a one size fits all thing. Some filmmakers will absolutely find CZcams is a great place to grow relative to their mindset and personal approach to things. At the same time, others will find that having a channel takes away from the time they could potentially be spending on growing in a different way that fits them better.

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_ Před rokem +3

      @seasprayvideo Oh absolutely, by all means. I really enjoy his content as well and I definitely won't stop watching because I disagree with something 😂 I just felt like this was something worth mentioning because I've been exactly in the position of someone trying to get stuff going career wise and at the same time having this worry in the back of my head that I'm missing out on so much by not starting my channel yet.

    • @scottsfreelunch
      @scottsfreelunch Před rokem +1

      @@georgekamenov_ I agree that there are many paths, and in the end, it might take away from what you inevitably want to achieve due to time or money, but I think the people who are likely going to come to this video would potentially need that little push of motivation to do something more instead of waiting on things to come to them. If in the end CZcams is not the right avenue for you, you still learned along the way and got some experience that you can take to your next project. I think in the end, you want to go create things and put it out there for those to critique and make you better. CZcams offers a big pool of potential audience members and is one of the best ways to connect to people if you don't have an established community. Either way, I think we all just want people go create awesome things and keep pushing others to be better project after project!

    I appreciate not having ads every video, but I really feel one per video is more than warranted. All your fans are in the same boat in some ways, so any haters should really understand the hustle. Your library is large and is going to keep generating small amounts of money, even if you quit Tomorrow.

    This is such a great video Luc. I struggle because all the big loud talking head bros are shouting but it seems like there's less room for women and quiet content. I want to get going but it's very demoralizing when the Think type guys are bellowing about tutorials and flash editing.

      Thank you, very happy you liked it! Some good news is that these days there are more and more women in key creative roles within the mainstream industry than ever before and that's growing all the time - so at least things are trending in the right direction, even if it's slow. Keep it up!

      Yeah, the set up is the worst part and will eat so much time! Batching is the only way I make it work - my record is 13 videos in the bank and then I went off on a 3 month shoot and the channel just kept going!

    Imo, your secret is not about your weekly schedule or ability to find sponsors; you simply make great interesting videos. I mean as an actor and as a content creator. You have something to share and know (or feel) how to do it in the interesting and right way :)

    • @LucForsyth
      @LucForsyth  Před rokem +1

      You didn't fail! It takes time, lots of time. I made 1 video per week for 6 months without passing 400 subs, and my first 10 videos had less than 100 views each, many less than 50. There's a system to doing it, finding topics, and getting better on camera, but the key is consistent uploading for a long period of time. Go look at MKBHD's channel and go back to the beginning. He's one of the most popular on earth and he made like 100 videos before he got 75 subs!
