Hey Luc - absolutely love your content, and the fact you have real hands on experience. I'm currently upgrading my entire set up and trying to decide between getting a DJI Ronin 4D with the flex attachment, or an FX6 combined with the DJI RS4 pro and new lidar system for auto focus. Mainly for single shooter doc style pieces, but also corporate and branded content. Really struggling to decide between the two, and don't know if you've used the 4D or RS4/RS3?

Hey Luc! I am watching the S11 premiere right now, and I was wondering if you could tell me which settings the Canon XA cameras use. I have an old G30 series from some years ago that I want to throw back into the mix, but can’t ever remember if the AVCHD or MP4 is ideal, or which mode to choose for ease of use. Figured the show contestants have their cameras set to one of the AV, TV, or P modes over manual. Thanks! Keep crushing it.

I made my last two CZcams videos on my iPhone and its hands down my best work to date🤷🏾‍♂

Talking about how some of the gear is more accessible than back in the day makes me think how crazy it is that a small 4k cam with a fast 35mm, wireless mic pack, gimbal or tripod and molus X100 will be good enough for most scenarios. A good laptop with Davinci Resolve free, hell even studio is cheap, in the right hands can make for a professional end result, even for big productions. And it all fits into ONE camera bag! I mean that's really stripping down an entire production crew with gear rentals and studio space and turns an entire $500000 production into a $5000 guerilla MACHINE haha. Oh yes, and then there's AI doing some of the work too! Again, keyword "IN THE RIGHT HANDS", but still, just that it is possible, is a crazy thought.

Thanks for the advice !! But a viewfinder off camera a 7inch is better.. what about ON camera? With smaller cameras ? To pull focus accuratly even with good brands would you prefer a 7 inch than a smaller 5inch in line with smaller cameras like C70, C400 ??

Nutrition is so important, since I decided to really commit to becoming full time DP, I went on a big health binge and lost 27kg mostly thanks to calorie control and healthy food choices, and now starting to put on muscle to make my body ready for grueling shoots and travel. I can totally see how being away from home would put a massive damper on this... First test coming up in a couple weeks during the yearly trip to the motherland (France), wish me luck :D

It's not just the cinematography. It's also the writing and acting style. A lot of older movies almost seem more like theatrical play. Modern writing and acting has become very realistic and close to real life. A good example of this is The Meyerowitz Stories. It's full of characters talking over each other and a lot of times having a conversation where both characters are not hearing each other at all and talking about totally separate things. It's really wild.

Very good video sir. You make good points on the needs vs wants of gear. We all get the it h and buy gear we rarely use and never really needed.

Having worked as a cinematographer for 20 years, primarily on feature films and TV shows, I can say that it is all about the story. If the story feels like it could benefit from a handheld style, then sure, go with that. But to say that you get more immersed in the story because of handheld, I strongly disagree. There are many examples where handheld has been a distraction rather than something that enhanced the story. In short, apply the cinematography that serves the story, not because something is trending.

I’ve just finished and uploaded an interview I did a couple of weeks back. In the process of editing, I was just beginning to do similar techniques in Resolve. Because we touched on subjects in and off throughout the interview, I had to piece all of those together in separate bins and timelines. The best thing I learned, by accident, was that you can select all the timelines and create a new timeline out of those. THEN, editing the original timelines affects the master one. This saved me so much time and stress. I know this is an older video, but I love how it showed up just as my video went live.
