She could get away with weak bars in 2004 and be in contention since with the 10 system you only lose several tenths. If you don't believe me look up the scores yourself. I really would love to know how Nastia's brain works. What kind of mental toughness does it take for a teenager to suffer through a challenging injury, stick to her dreams, and then be able to perform at her very best when she needed it most? So many people (myself included) have done well in practice, but then choked on the real thing due to pressure and nerves. She did the opposite. She made mistakes during other competitions, and even during warm-ups at the AA. But when it came to the actual competition, she delivered above and beyond. I mean, just look at that vault. That's what fascinates me the most. It takes superhuman confidence and determination to fight through so many things set against her and come out on top. Everyone thought Shawn would win AA, but Nastia surprised us all. I know she had a big advantage on bars, but I am still just amazed at her inner strength.

It was super cool to get an inside look into her mind here. Also sad to hear Shawn say recently she was battling with bad mental health, borderline anorexia and addiction. These poor athletes go through so much to make it to these high levels, I often wonder if they think it's worth it in the end.

Fortunately she overcame that and now has an amazing family and life. The saddest part is that tends to happen a lot in gymnastics because people judge athletes by their physical appearance instead of their abilities. It’s gotten better, gymnasts are encouraged to be strong and athletic rather than super skinny… but the sentiment does still exist.

She also got a 9.5 execution for her Amanar-ish vaulting which is just crazy. Nastia was overscored as well but overall was cleaner, it's mostly her bars dismount where she got hammered in international competitions, but the rest of her elements - especially on beam and vault - weren't deducted much more different than at nationals. Gymnasts looked like they were floating back then and had beautiful lines. I like gymnastics now, but I really wish they would make it flowy and graceful now.

The scoring in gymnastics back in 2008 had the all around winner be good in uneven bars. Now a days I think the high scoring apparatus is vault. I don't think they can ever make gymnastics equal for all four apparatus but I feel the floor or beam should score the most because the routine last the longest about 1 1/2 minute. Vault only takes about 1/2 minute but whatever they do the scoring can never be completely fair.

They shouldn’t be equal, vault lasts about 5 seconds so it’s difficult to pick apart deductions. They can’t lower the D scores so that it’s more fair. You can’t do all around if you’re not good on every event. I don’t think there’s any modern day gymnast that is equally good on all 4 events.

I 100% believe that Valeri meant to say, "Nastia is like me. Silver is the biggest disappointment she can imagine." I won't argue that he ruined Rebecca Bross' career or dispute what Katelyn Ohashi has said about him. But he was talking about Nastia's own attitude toward competition and how it mirrored his own when he was an athlete.

I can watch this over and over. First, Nastia is the epitome of what gymnastics should be: perfect balance of ability and grace. I’ve always
Been drawn to gymnastics like her, I.e. Julianne McNamara. Second, knowing that Shawn intentionally (in her own words) didn’t talk to Nastia for 9 years because she was bitter about losing tells me much about her character at that time and seeing Nastia literally runaway with the gold here is so satisfying. Yes Shawn has matured since but still. Third, I think Nastia was robbed of the gold on the bars also. There should be two gold medals awarded.

I will always remember this Olympics fondly because the Team and all around finals were broadcast live in the states during prime time. They had the finals in the morning in Beijing so that they could be broadcast in the evening in the USA. A decade and change later what we are left with is 1.) following the live scoring and then watching the event in prime time already knowing the result which sucks 2.) watching live during crazy times online using streaming. I miss the days when we could watch gymnastics in primetime during the Olympics with the result not known already. At least in the 1992-2004 era (with the exception of Sydney) you could reasonably tune in during prime time without knowing the result. Nowadays this is gone and we get crap in prime time that is so overproduced that you could figure out who the winner was just based on what routines are shown. They don't even try "plausibly live" anymore. It sucks. We won't get anything like it during Paris in 2024, but we might actually get some live gymnastic in coverage in LA in 2028. We will see.
