- HOW TO CLEAN SPORTS CARDS TO GET HIGHER GRADES!
Welcome back to Joe’s Card Stache!
This week I’m going to show you how I clean each one of my sports cards to help get higher grades from PSA. I was also talk about the controversy around card cleaning and where I stand on that topic.
Everything I show you in this video (as well as the tools) are from Kurt’s Card Care. It is by far the best resource for cleaning cards. Go subscribe to his CZcams channel and watch the hundreds of tutorials he has on there. You can also buy his products on his website:

For the last six months I have been cleaning every card I send to PSA. And by "cleaning" I mean using a polish on the surface of prizm cards and using a edge tool to make sure the corners and edges are as sharp as possible. I have noticed this has really helped my gem rate when submitting to PSA.
00:00 - Intro
01:20 - What exactly is card cleaning
05:35 - The card cleaning tools I use
08:05 - Card cleaning demo
I hope you like this video and find it informative. Please let me know if the comments if you guys have any questions.

Will be interested to see how those chemicals eat away at the refractor after a few years.
Im sure Kurts has at least ten years of research and development in chem reactions....right? Good point though, imagine five years from now any card conserved by kurts is bleached out or bubbled? Hope he put a strong disclaimer on his product, yikes
I’m reaching out to Kurt to see what he says about the long term effects of his products on cards.
Cool video Joe! I would just push back on one thing though. I agree that it's fine to wipe cards over and even attempt to fix corner's with tools ect. But you said itself yourself, adding any substance to a card is against PSA policy. This is where I have a problem with these kits. You're doing exactly that by adding a wax polish to the surface. The purpose of waxing/polishing is to not only clean a surface but also fill scratches and imperfections. So, although it may temporarily fix a surface for grading but what's happens to the wax/polish substance in time with warm weather etc. sitting in a plastic case? You could be leaving a future owner of that card very disappointed.
Just my take. Maybe i have it wrong?
It was cool to see something new though
Ya glad he did this video, now I know to never purchase a card from him.
@204matt - Sorry to hear you don’t want to buy cards from me Matt. Although I think you might be surprised how many graded cards are cleaned like this. These cleaning kits are very popular. If this bothers you so much, you may want to ask anyone you buy cards from if they’ve cleaned them so you don’t buy from them either. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Hey Damian, i see your point but I don’t think of the polish as something that’s being left on the card. I believe the guy (Kurt) who designed the product made sure it would wipe away clean and not leave any type of residue. You should check out his channel. He is a very, very long time card collector who truly loves these cards and i don’t think he want to compromise them in anyway. I’ll shoot him a DM and see what he says about that concern. Thanks for the comment! I’ll let you know what I hear back.
The polish fills scratches and dimples. Thats what makes the card or paint on a car look so smooth and flawless. So yes the polish is left behind in very small amounts, but definitely still there. Polish could evaporate in the slab causing hazing and whatever else. You should deep clean a cheap card, get it graded, then submit the slab to different heat conditions to see if there are any ill effects over time.
@@JoesCardStache Thanks Joe, I would definitely be keen to hear a possible response from the creator of the product. I've heard of the kits before and know it's very popular among people who grade regularly.
But that polishing process for me personally raises an eyebrow of concern as I mentioned.
I thought it was great you made an informative video on the topic and process though. And there was good general tips on just handling the cards in general. That tape over the edges was a great tip.
Thanks mate
If its a bad autograph i just wipe it off and resign it. I get 10s all the time
Hahahaha!
😂
Just found your channel and am loving everything about it! Keep it up! I personally have been watching the UFC for almost 15 years now and just recently started UFC card collecting but since I know so little about card collecting in general, I'm not buying more boxes at the moment because of the whole Fanatics taking over or something so I have no idea what is the best, say, hobby box to buy at the moment or to wait until the new cards go into circulation but I don't know when that'll be. Thanks for the entertaining and cool videos!!
Hey Hey Joe! Always appreciate the content! Great video my friend! Thanks for sharing the love of the hobby!!! My son is really into card collecting! Lots of fun!
Thanks Jason! What kind of cards is your son collecting?
Mostly baseball, basketball and football!!! We also enjoy Pokemon and UFC! He collects everything!!!! Hope all is well!!! @@JoesCardStache
Needed this video, i appreciate all the tips
Thanks Randy! Glad to help!
I'm big on cleaning my cards and have been using Kurt's kit for a while now. Nothing wrong with making your cards more presentable to the folks who are grading them. I even clean cards that I don't plan on sending off, I just enjoy doing it.
I completely agree. It’s crazy how weird some people get about it. I’ve already had two people repost this video saying it’s a tutorial on how to alter cards. 🤦🏻♂️
Premium content... even though we don't grade cards!
Thanks guys. 🙏
I need this!
Hope it helps.
Perfect timing, about to send to psa
Only submit one card at a time to get the best grades. PSA doesnt like rewarding too many 10's in a single order
@Majentaplacenta Good luck!
@CDubRealTalk I’ve actually experienced the opposite. I seem to get more tens when I submit more cards. When I just submitt one or two, they seem more strict.
Well made video! I'm super disappointed bc I sent psa a card for crossover (clean cgc 8.5) wanted a 9 spent $120 total and got denied. If you're willing I'd totally pay you for services and submission. As I'm disabled and unable to use my hands. Thanks, and no worries if not.
Hey man. Sorry to hear you were denied. I personally don’t like taking on the responsibility of submitting other people’s cards but I know there are many reputable people around the country that will do it for you. Good luck.
Pro Tip: Black Nitrile gloves with a skin tight fit are best at preventing any card mishandling caused by loose fitting gloves. Glove wrinkles can catch edges and cause loss of card control
Thanks man. Yeah. I noticed the baggy gloves were not working well. I’ll have to get some smaller ones.
Great video Joe! 2024 will be the year of Gem 10s! 🔥
We can only hope man! Thanks for watching and the comment!
PSA does not want pull tabs put on submitted cards.
Oh no! I just submitted with them. When did they say that?
I have never graded any before.
Im just a collector. Thanks for the tips though. Sweet video bud. 👍
That’s the best thing about this hobby, everybody can do it their own way. Thanks for watching man. 👊
Nice vid. I just sent 100 cards in today with the $14.99 special. I used the old fashioned blow and wipe method so wish me luck lol. Even if I get the average 70% that's 70 PSA 10s!
Holy shit man. 100 card order!! I can’t wait for that video! Good luck man. You always do pretty well.
@@JoesCardStache thanks man. Yeah I was waiting for a deal for months and I had to settle for 100 when I have like 200 I want to grade lol.
Bulk grading is the easiest way to get the lowest grade average possible. Also, should just sell the cheapy 200 raw cards and buy one big card thats already graded.
Thanks for this one Joe, I’m sure this will help a lot of people with their gem rate on submissions.
Thanks Zac. I hope it helps some people. 🤞
I learned from grading coins with PCGS(sister company to PSA) that you will achieve the best grades by submitting one card or coin at a time. Also, conserving coins and cards is not faux paux. Conservation is done on artwork and antiques and automobiles, etc... all the time. Multimillion dollar pieces do not lose value by conservation, they gain value. Same is true for sportscards. Practice on base cards first so you dont make a high dollar rookie mistake.
Thanks for the comment CDub. I agree about the conservation of artwork being similar. I personally haven’t had the same experience submitting one or two cards at a time. I’ve always gotten worse grades when I’ve done that.
Also I have a friend who works at PCGS. The office is about 15 minutes from where I work. He’s always trying to get me into coins.
Coins have insane values. Talk about being able to buy dirt cheap and then see massive profits through grading! I have been grading coins for about 4 years now. What does your friend do at PCGS?
@@CDubRealTalk He works in their marketing department as an Art Director. He used to work with me at RVCA then left for PCGS about 3 years ago. He was telling me stories about how the entire PSA/PCGS building was full of boxes of cards that people submitted (they didn’t have enough room to store them all) which is why PSA had to shut down for a year to catch up.
Thats insane! I figured PCGS graders were having to help grade cards during that time, they told me they definitely werent, but l dont know. That was before l got into cards again. Then went crazy the last few years ripping UFC hobby by the box, then by the case. Thats why l have concluded that ripping cases is the best way to guarentee big hits. It seems like l either hit a 1/1 or the case has a bunch of /10 cards. You live in a great state to find coins. Go check out a nice coin shop sometime with your son. Shops dont grade coins very often since they deal in so much volume. You can cherry pick raw coins like nobodys business, get them graded, and get sweet investment returns. For example, l purchased a 1941 Jefferson nickel for $1.50. PCGS graded it MS67+ FS(Mint State Full Steps). That coin now has a fair market value of $750. If you have an eye for detail, which l know you do based on your vids and profession, you can make lots of extra money in coins. Once you see a high mint state coin that is graded, you cant unsee it, and it makes finding raw coins in high grades much easier. I love both coins and cards, they go hand in hand.
Finally caught this one Joe. I actually watched a video from Nothing But Cardboard a while back where they cleaned a Joe Burrow Rookie Downtown, and it went from a PSA 7 to 10!
I think this is definitely a grey area for some, as how would a buyer feel if they knew what the card went through. However, at the end of the day what the current state of the card is should be sufficient for the buyer. Baseball Card Collector Investor Dealer's channel had 2 great videos about this topic recently as well. Honestly I feel like it's fine, since it's within reason of the grading companies, so why not try for any advantage that you can.
Thanks for watching man. I’m a big fan of the NBD guys. I saw that Burrow video. Crazy man. I’m definitely not that extreme. I’m not cracking slabs to improve their grade. I mainly just use this stuff on my PC Cards that I’m sending to PSA. Plus I really enjoy doing it. Thanks for the comment. Can’t wait for your videos in 2024!
Dam, good content, Joe.
Thanks Joshua! I appreciate it man.
Hope you get some 10's.
Thanks man! Me too. I’ll let you know how it goes when these come back.
what’s ur ebay link ?
Hey man. It’s joes_card_stache I’ll be adding stuff on there all month.
So its officially banned by PSA now?
Hey Jason. They say you’re not allowed to put anything on your card to clean it (other than breath or water) but they have no way to detect what you’ve put on the card as long as you wipe it off well. So it’s kind of a ridiculous rule since they have no idea if you are doing it.
