As the title says, this is just a preview. This project has been in production since July 2022, and currently has an expected completion date of March-May 2024. Be aware that there are a few mistakes and some incomplete sections, which will be corrected ahead of the final release.
Beyond impressive!
Wrong! I believe this project has been in production since 962
You could have made multiple other videos in that time

Can't wait! This is gonna be sick.

This will truly be absolutely fantastic and well researched once it’s done. Definitely looking to be the most impressive project you’ve put together in the decade of your CZcams journey Ollie!
Can’t wait to see the final version! Lets hope the details will be outstandingly good!
I'm looking forward to it too!
He didn't have to include the nations outside the HRE, yet he took the time to include them. Mad respect 🤝
This dude will make the most complex and yet the best Holy Roman Empire map, time lapse, ever created on CZcams! I hope the video gets a lot of views for Ollie is the exceptional and the most legendary mapper out there!
Yes! This is going to be so confusing and complicated (which is a compliment considering the HRE), this is going to be great! The hard work and research that was put into to this deserves a massive thank you.
He's doing what few others have had the courage to do, taking on the impossible.
I absolutely loved the first Holy Roman Empire video but this looks so much cleaner and more detailed and accurate. Can't wait and I know how hard you have been working on this Ollie!
An Addition that I think could be helpful is if you indicate which individual held the title King of Germany and/ or King of the Romans, especially with the Interregnum, as it might indicate that the empire had no executive at all during the periods where there was no emperor, Video looks great super excited for it!
Yes, that will actually be shown. The empty area in the top-right contains some space for that, as well as some other info about the Empire, such as electors.
Great to see this project coming along so smoothly. I look forward to the full release Ollie.
This Is just so unimaginably good, and while It may only be a preview It already looks fantastic! Great work!
Wow this is amazing. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of public, easily accessible mapping information about subkingdoms and various domains not owned by the crown in many pre-modern European states, which is why I am so appreciative of this video
This is an enormous project...
I hope it'll get millions of views
You are such a legend and I cannot wait for this!
Can't wait for the full video! (Love the new style btw)
Great video. I especially love the colour you used for the ecclesiastical states
You’re in my top favorite mappers Ollie and have been for years! This looks exciting! The HRE has always been so intricate and intriguing to me.
Amazing! I can't wait to see the full video! Great job
Finally, Yes!!!, Cant wait to see the full video :D
Your recent stuff is increedible, keep it up!
Outstanding! Can’t wait to see the full video.
You are doing a great job! I'm already looking forward to a new masterpiece!!!
the amount of work must be incredible, looking forward to seeing final version
Oh my god, are you actually doing this? That's insane. I've been looking all over the internet for detailed HRE maps at different time periods, but they come at 50-year intervals at most. I don't think anyone has ever attempted anything this elaborate. Good luck, sir.
EDIT: I was wrong, one madman actually attempted this before, and it was you lol.
NO WAY I WAS WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG WAITING FOR FULL VIDEO!!!
Excellent work! Looking forward to seeing the completion version!
good god finally. Someone has finally gone through the absolute terror of mapping out the Holy Roman Empire - I had to do this for just 1788, and it was insane how difficult and complicated it was. Bravo for managing to pull this off, this will make my life so much easier!
Looks exciting. Can’t wait to see it in full.
This is already a great achievement. Good luck with the rest of the project!
This men deserves a price for his work. Amazing work as always.
Great preview Ollie! Waiting for the actual video
Take a shot every time Egbart II, Margrave of Miessen (1068-1089) switches sides.
Can't wait!!
The greatest video of all time is on its way.
Holy moly THIS LOOKS AWESOME!
Amazing work, looking forward to this. What source/Books do you use for the comprehensive knowledge of each year ? thanks!
That's a hue and magnificent project; I wish you reselience and force to fulfill it!
I'm so hyped!! This is so cool.
Banger video, great job
Hey man I saw your maps of the world years ago and a few others since. I was wondering if you had plans to revamp the info with more recent information. Like with Golbeki Tepe and other sites.
I also really liked your map of London, I wish though it showed the areas of power in the city as well at the transfer between, Britannia, Anglo Saxon, Norse, or Norman with the construction projects. But really cool work man!
yummy video, glad i helped on 1% of the project
Cannot wait for the release. This looks sick so far
He is actually doing it. He is doing the final boss of mapping
The precision is absolutely mindblowing
This is just a preview, yet it would already be absolutely astounding as a standalone video
Will you name more sources when releasing the full video ? I've been trying to find more information about the political history of my area (Lothringia) for ages but I never managed to find anything this precise
Do you have any advice to give for this kind of huge research ?
Looking forward to this!
I can't wait!
So excited for this! My wife will have no choice but to look at more HRE maps and content!
This video will be one of the most interesting mapper-projects on youtube.
Amazing job!
Wow this is a great project, well done .
Hopefully in the future we might get a full Roman Empire map (west and east).
I'm super excited for this
Looking forward to the video.
Thanks good luck uploading
It's already impressive, i can't wait
This is insane, a true masterpiece
Quel travail! MERCI
I like how related dynasties have similar colors
holy shit, your videos just get better and better.
We needed this video ¡INCREDIBLE AND AMAZING! Ollie Bye is the BEST
can't wait for that, especially how you show meissen/saxony
When you will post it???
Great work!
Much thanks.
Hyped
Nice video!!! Great work, is taking obscene ammounts of time with the HRE bordergore
great work
Ollie which software do you use to make this? I want to make maps like this too but don't know how?
This is gonna be the map video of all time
Amazing bro hope to see more this version looks so good keep up the good work ❤️👍 love from Iran 🇮🇷 🦁
I eagerly await
Do you think you could make an updated tutorial on how you make these videos?
It's extremely impressive how you've showed the non-feudal west-frisians becoming de facto independent around 1000
I luv your work. ^^
Cant wait
This is going to be so lit
That's absolutely SO BEAUTIFUL.
Reddit has a section called map porn. That's exactly that. I wonder why we are maps addict since our childhood.
West Frisia as a distinction in this time is a bit contentious. The Region as we understand it today was still part of the larger Free Frisian Lands, meanwhile the historical lands of Holland were also styled as West Frisia and were under the rule of the ancestors of the later counts of Holland.
The Frisian Lands in general were more complex and did not seem to be under direct or indirect control of Lower Lotharingia. The counts of Holland seem to at least for the Period of 1005 to 1039 been a direct vassal of the Emperor. But most likely earlier, as they inherited the lands from when Godfrid was murdered by the first ancestor of the dynasty in 885. Similarly in this same timeframe the modern province of Friesland was de jure under the control of the Brunonen dynasty starting in 1006 under Liudolf of Brunswick and ending in 1088 when the emperor granted it to Utrecht.
EDIT: It might be an idea to color Viking held lands seperately so that you can also indicate the time period of each duchy held by them. Godfrid, Duke of Frisia held most of Frisia (all of zeeland, holland and frisia most likley) from 882 to 885. And earlier the region around Utrecht and Kennemerland were held by Rorik of Dorestad.
Hope this helps.
Frisia in general was hard to find dates for, especially this earlier period. However from what I could gather the Frisians west of the Zuiderzee appeared to be self-govorning from 993. I'm not showing the Bruonids as, to my knowledge, they were still at least theoretically subdortinate to the Lotharingian dukes. After that duchy collapse's you'll see the Bruonids briefly, but when they die out that area will be shown as part of the Frisian freedom. If you have Discord I suggest you join my research channel and we can discuss it further.
Man can’t wait for it!!! Super hyped up for this, keep up the good work! I am also curious as to what you will decide to do with the Teutonic Order lands, in the empire or outside? Who knows :)
That's an issue I've looked into already. They kept their status deliberately unclear, at times implying they were fiefs of the Emperor, but at other times implying they were fiefs to others. I've decided not to show them as part of the Empire, although I have made notes about Golden Bull of Rimini in my notes in case someone else has a different interpretation. Good question!
Is there any chance you could tell us what date you are up to now in the project? :) @@OllieBye
@@furiousfox7712 Still 1050 unfortunately. I'm not going to make any progress on that front until the research is finished. And that is itself paused at the moment as I'm working on a video about the Habsburgs. That videoe's using the same research, so it'll be like another preview in some sense. I'm at 1437 with that video.
@@OllieBye take all the time you need , it’s gonna be done when it’s ready and that’s that :D A masterpiece that is the mapping of the HRE takes A LOT time, bon courage!
This will be absolutely phantastique! 👍👍👍 Is there the possibility to use the original german names i.e. Bayern, Schwaben, Sachsen, Franken?
Great video
I love how it can be put too 2160p so i can zoom into the smaller nations
Great video🎉
this is so cool!
He's actually doing it 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Great job
I love the details in the Meißen-Lausitz/Lusatia region :) Also a good way to showcase the development of Saxony from the tribal duchy in the north (where the anglo-saxons a.k.a. english came from) to the electorate and kingdom in the east. But man I dread the work you have to do to get through the 1400s to 1800s. What a mess that was 😅But also would be nice to see how much clean-up the Vienna Congress actually did.
good work!
Mapping the HRE: You really have to be dedicated to tackle this mess (or completely insane - hehehe). Looking forward to the final release and to find out what eventually happened to the HRE (I hear some French guy got rid of it). 😉
Looks astounding. If you dont mind me asking how on earth did you research all the border changes?
You have to stop thinking of the HRE as a single place, and research each area on a very zoomed in level. In extreme cases that can even mean researching individual villages. Most of the research is easy to do, there's just a massive volume of it. What's difficult is not losing motivation and keeping it organised.
@@OllieBye That's massively commendable. Do you have any go to sources on the hre as I'm quite interested?
So nice video!
holy god damn this is great
0:01 So Charlemagne's empire worked like a personal union? Were all these divisions considered their own kingdoms/duchies etc.?
Impressive! Maybe you can add explanations for the abbreviations of the small states.
Yes, they're in the project files. I'll explain it after the full video is uploaded.
Can I use your maps as a reference for a game mod?
very impressive
these frankish borders look so nice aaahh
🔥
