  • Captain Dave Talks about using the Dropper Loop Rig. When fishing live or dead bait near the bottom, especially when on top of structure or a squid bed in deeper water, it’s the go-to setup for most SoCal and Baja anglers. Either fishing for deep yellowtail or halibut on the bottom, the dropper loop rig is a must know fishing rig!

Captain Dave, thank you for sharing your profound knowledge on this video. Clipping part of the bait's tail off to slow down is a priceless tip. I fish the jetties in Washington, we catch rockfish/greenlings to use as live bait for a lingcod. Fishing a live bait from the jetty had been very difficult, because I can't really dictate where my bait swims down to, yet I need to present my bait near the bottom for lings. Most of the times, my live bait would swim right into the rocks and get snagged up (5 out of 10 casts). I have rigged a bait under a balloon or a big bobber but wasn't that productive. I have tried dropper loop rigs but a live bait would drag the weight and swim into rocks. I have lost shit ton of greenlings/rockfishes and countless tackles but still managed to catch several 15 pound + lingcods. I would love to fish from a boat and drop my bait down vertically like you guys, but fishing the jetty makes the fishing more challenging and much more rewarding! Once again, I really appreciate all your educational videos. I swear I just got better at fishing by listening to you.😁

I used to get my live squid from either CISCOS or Capt Hooks (it's been a while, so I'm not sure if Hooks is still in bus) in the harbor at their bast wells, The bait boat for CISCOS used to be (and probably still is) the Traveler, and you can ask them if they have any or know of anybody who does. And, if nobody had any bait, and the squid was in the area, I just meter them and drop a squid jig and make my own bait.. Good luck out there, and let me know how you do!
