The Discomfort of Eric
😂😅
Your reaction = best thing of the whole prize!!
☺️😭😭😭
was it?? not really
Your Discomfort Won the Evening 🙂 Congratulations to the winners and all the authors who were in the running.
Haha! Thank you! 📚
Watching this with you was priceless🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️
Eric, you really introduced me to British book awards and your enthusiasm and the way you share it is fantastic!!
Thank you! 🤗📚
Your disappointment was so tangible!!!! I felt it through the screen! Aw, I really want to read the Greengage Tree now!
Watching your face during the reveal of the winner was hysterical. That smile...oh wow 😯😂 Thank you Eric for this video. I haven’t read any of the shortlist this year but I wanted to read the memory police and the hurricane season. I will have to add the discomfort of evening to my TBR so I can see what it’s like. I am sorry your favourite didn’t win but congratulations on the winner 🥳! X
I was rooting for the same books as you did, Eric. Watching your reaction was priceless! This year I decided to only read books from the shortlist that I knew I would like/love, so skipped The Discomfort of Evening" LOL I'm willing to have a go now, hearing that it "astounded" the judges.
I loved Discomfort of Evening so happy it won 🥳
Eric that was the most marvellous way to watch the announcement. I’m laughing and crying! It’s the one I haven’t read and feel happy for author but a tad disappointed too. 😢😅
I hope you had another Pimms 😁 It was great to see your reaction after watching all your videos throughout the prize.
I had only read the Discomfort of Evening so it was clearly the one that took my attention the most. I do think it is a very unpopular decision in the sense that it isn´t a book to please the vast majority but more so, for certain kind of reader who looks for something dark. I am happy though, it is important that international prices value other kind of stories, otherwise we would have decades of only historical fiction winning, or only popular romance....
Thanks for sharing your reaction :)
I so much wanted The Enlightenment of the Greengage tree to win 😭 It was by far my absolute favorite out of the lot. I absolutely adored it. But watching this announcement with you was marvelous. 🌟
This was a delight to watch with you. I feel so bad that you held those all up for so long! I’m sorry your favorite didn’t win...
'The Discomfort' blew me away, I'm really happy for Marieke.
You are brilliant, Eric. It was so enjoyable watching this with you and I am as shocked as you are! I couldn't even finish it! I wanted Tyll to win!
this was such a fun way to find out the winner! based on what i heard from you and others i felt convinced that The Discomfort of Evening was the one i was least interested in reading and so shared your disappointment at the reveal. guess i'll give it a shot one of these days ~
Ah, your face when it was announced! I felt the same way as you did. I guess it's all so subjective. Going to read Hurricane Season soon!
Ha! It’s one of those books that just wasn’t for me I guess. Hope you enjoy Hurricane Season and that you’re doing well. 🤗📚
So envious of your library!
Thank you for sharing your reactions. I am disappointed that The Memory Police was not the winner. I read it several months ago and think about it often.
Love your excitement and enthusiasm. Sorry it didn’t result in your favour. I was rooting for The Memory Police or The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree. Now I will need to read the winner.
It was so fun to watch this with you before hearing the news, I haven’t read them all as you have, but the winner is the one I was least interested in. I’ll give it a try eventually but most likely I’ll wait for a library copy rather than purchase it.
Oh Eric this video is THE BEST! Loved it! Thank you!!! 🤗
The winner is the only book I have not read. The China Iron novel falls apart towards the end but the others are superb and worthy of the prize.
OMG I'm so shocked. I have never enjoyed any Booker Prize winner or even nominee before. I stumbled on The Discomfort Of Evening by accident on my librarys app and really enjoyed it So sorry your favourite didnt win Eric.
What a surprise!
I just added Hurricane Season and Tyll to my TBR. They look very good. Great reaction video!!! It was a pleasure to watch.
Oooh, I just picked up the Eighth Life a few days ago. It looks wonderful! And this whole video is just delightful. Thanks for bringing some bookish joy to the internet and to my evening!
Great! I hope you enjoy The Eighth Life! 📚
This was GREAT, Eric. So glad we got to watch with you. I’ve only read The Memory Police of the shortlisted books, but I adored it. I’m reading more Ogawa. I just finished the short story collection, Revenge, over the weekend and really loved it. The Housekeeper and the Professor will be up soon. I will have to take a look at Hurricane Season. I just wonder how the votes broke down, but we’ll probably never know. 🤷♀️
That was great. Sitting here in Cape Town watching it live with you. I am sorry your favourite did not win. I too loved Hurricane Season
azar's book sounds so interesting! it's a time period and place i've been interested in studying further and i love that it's done in a way that's narrative style.
Love this video! I'm only 40 pages from finishing Greengage Tree at the moment and really enjoying it! The Memory Police is next on my WIT month TBR. Hurricane Season has intrigued me but I feel nervous about the violence... but you may have just convinced me 😉. I havn't ready any others but from all the mentions of these books across booktube, the Discomfort of Evening has interested me the least... 🤷🏼♀️
Thanks for sharing Eric. I am a slow reader so have not progressed very far . Hurricane Season and Memory Police are definitely on my tbr list. Thanks for sharing the excitement with us.
Eric, I just love your channel and all knowledge you offer us - your viewers. Thank you so much and be healthy and content.
Really entertaining video Eric ..just missed the live broadcast so this was the next best thing . Who needs Twitter !! I'm delighted with the winner . Still thinking about that Dutch farm and the family weeks later . That red coat !!
Thank you for sharing this moment with us. I trust your judgement better which means I will read first those you recommended by you: Hurricane Season and The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree. I already own The Memory Police but I haven't read it yet.
Fab! Hope you enjoy them. 📚
You are my favourite person on CZcams. Ever.
Thank you! 🤗📚
Watching you watching the announcement is so fantastic. That's a really good idea!
This was excellent, Eric. Sorry that none of your picks won. 😟
This was such fun to watch! Thank you for sharing your reaction with us 🤗
I wanted to join you in the Pimms but nine o’clock in the morning felt a little early. 😉I haven’t read any of the books but feel your pain about the decision Eric, it was still fun to watch with you though!
This video was great. I didn't see it until today but I had already seen who had won and knew how delighted you would be. I could picture your face dropping as the winner was announced and so it did! Personally I loved this book. It was moving, weird and just a great read that I could not put down. I said when I read it that it would win and so it did. It is one of the those books that makes you feel uncomfortable when you read it and that I think is the mark of a good book. I know you had expressed dislike for this book previously and I am sorry that one of the books you liked did not win. However it makes a change for a book I have actually read to win a prize so I am celebrating with a cup of tea.
Thanks! I’m glad you loved it and yes, a cup of tea is the perfect way to celebrate!
You are so cute and wholesome omg , you must be protected at all costs.
I was rooting for "The Memory Police"! Although "The Discomfort of Evening" was also good. Surely it made me feel uncomfortable due to some graphic and vivid scenes, but overall I felt it was a very solid novel. Thanks for sharing your reaction, it was so great to watch! :)
Thanks for doing all of this! Great to watch.
I was waiting for you to know that! Great! Thanks!
Brilliant video . I'm so happy . This book is stunning and in still thinking about it some weeks after reading it . Very dark, but a brilliant translation.
I’ve not read any of these and it seems to me that 5 hours debating who to give the prize to means it was not an easy decision. I would have loved to be a fly in the wall in that zoom meeting!
I really admire your courage in giving us such an honest reaction, of putting yourself out there... I took a look at the book & the reviews on Goodreads and I don't think I am going to read it in the near future. It did not really appeal to me, though I realise that it is pushing a lot of boundaries.
Thanks! 📚
Loved the video! I was rooting for Hurricane Season too.
I was one of those few watching this prize live as it was streamed. And, my reaction was much like yours. I too thought the Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree was most deserving of the prize, followed closely behind by Hurricane Season. I wonder if this prize will help or hinder this new author's writing future. Only time will tell.
Love to see your video and I'll definitely read Hurricane Season :)
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it! 📚
Ooh, can't hardly wait.
Hahaha, you're adorable. I haven't read the book but read some of my friends' reviews. The Discomfort sounds like what I call literary misery porn, which I loathe. I'm going to try to read the two you liked and The Memory Police.
I also was hoping Hurricane Season would win. I haven't read DofE and not sure I want to read a "scatalogical novel" (guardians words not mine haha), interesting win though!
I love how excited you get. 😄 Great Video!
An excellent choice! I think you missed out on Hamnet also. The announcement this morning was a great event. Tucson Bob
I love your videos.i have paced my reading as well
i agreed with your choices and could see your disappointment.
My favourite was China Iron, but I was not expecting it to win. I was also not expecting the discomfort of evening to win though...
📚
Oh My, I’ve just seen this book in Foyles this afternoon. The winner, I mean.
Great video Eric 😁😁
Your videos make me so happy, you just seem like such a great guy. In regards to the video though, am I the only one who didn’t love The Memory Police?? I really wanted to love it and it definitely wasn’t a bad book but I felt like something was lacking.
The winner is the one book in the list that I do not want to read. what a drag.
waiting for you reaction, and made me laugh. nice video
Great video!
Liked this video purely for your impression of Elizabeth McGovern 😂😂😂
I may read some of these on the short list and peruse the long list for my TBR but the winner containing animal abuse well that’s a deal breaker for me. I will never knowingly read a book containing animal abuse.
I haven't read it, but it sounds like they were rewarding the translation maybe more than the novel?
I hope not, the translation is, well... not very good... Clunky and uninspired.
@ so much for that theory! I'm not inspired to pick it up.
Definitely not, but as a qualified translator myself it is clear that the responsibility the translator has while translating someone else’s work is very high and it is a very stressful endeavour. Translators deserve recognition, but they also should remain in the background and a shadow of the author who is the creator of language, style, story,, characters. The job of the translator is just decoding from source language to translated language. They have the duty to honour the author’s story. Very hard job.
@@Sherlika_Gregori since this prize splits the money evenly between author and translator, I thought they may have considered the translation or perceived difficulty of the translation in their deliberations.
You facial expression is priceless lol...
Great! And this book, witten by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld is not te be believed. And yes, I am dutch, so very proud. Read it. You wll not regret it.
sorry eric.
Of the videos I've watched on the shortlist, no one really liked the winner...
You are very sweet
Dreadfully disappointed. I wanted the memory police to win but after that, any of them before the eventual winner 😕
omg they all sound so good. im curious what made them gravitate to the one they picked?! Does that make you nervous about the other prize that you'll be judging? dont! make sure you bring your excellent taste and opinions and influence to that board! I now want to read them all - ive only read the memory police and found it haunting and disturbing. I also want to read 8th Life that you enjoyed so much. Im scared of its size as I am of Joyce Carol Oates Sleep Dream etc. Anyhow, ill still read Hurricane because i trust you!
Thank you! Yeah, I would have loved to listen to their discussion. I’ll definitely be making my opinion know for the Costa. 😄📚📚📚
Eric Karl Anderson i bet!! fight for your belief in the best book!!
Eric Karl Anderson dont let them try to pressure you like they do on those american juries haha
Had been rooting for The Memory Police. Disappointed.
Prattay Pramanik me too
OMG you're so cute, and you make me laugh
☺️📚

📚📕😍👍👍
WoW! This is a HUGE disappointment. I gave this book a 2 star review!
This is a disappointment, I really wanted the Memory Police to win.
Books are a form of art. Art simply can not be judged. It is subjective. Is the Mona Lisa or The Last supper the best painting. How about best song. Imagine by John Lennon or Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.. Judging art is foolishness. Take that Booker Prize. You wasted your time.
I fully agree with you when it comes to judging art. However, in this day and age, I do understand the necessity of handing out book awards for marketing/commercial purposes. What amused me even more is the reading public rooting for a particular book to win, usually not based on merits but if the book speaks to their own culture. It's comical to the extent that the public roots for a book in the same fervor as football fans root for their country in the World Cup.
