    I cry as I write this, just over 6 months after I lost a dear partner. Lord hear my prayer, and let perpetual light shine on those dearly departed.

    Hear my prayer, O Lord:
    and let my crying come unto thee.

      I should say our music is 330 years behind his, rather. Our music is chronologically further along than his, sure, but aesthetically barrelling down a declination.

    • @bigl5343
      @bigl5343 Před 2 lety +3

      Not easy at all. Baroque choral music is the most difficult to master according to the singers and voice professors I discussed the topic with. Baroque music stretched the boundaries of tonal harmony well-beyond that of Classical period and even most of Romantic period music. The extreme dissonance, complex form, and required singing technique such as using little or no vibrato truly makes Purcell difficult to execute.

    The thing about Purcell is that just about everything he wrote is a show-stopper. He must have had off-days or times when he rushed something out for a client - but all his major works are edge-of-seat incredible eg Dido and Aeneas, which is 20 chart-toppers in a row. Even his run-of-the-mill theatre music is frequently obviously the work of a unique genius. There is no sphere of music for which he did not write eternal masterpieces eg the trio-sonatas.

    What a great performance of such a stunning motet, and what an incredible video! So well made. Thank you with all my heart! I’ve no words for this, so must borrow the words of another, surely well- known to us all:
    The poet wisheth well to the Divine Genius of Purcell and praiseth Him that, whereas Other musicians have given Utterance to the Moods of Man’s Mind, He hath, beyond that, Uttered in Notes the very Make and Species of Humanity as Created both in One and in All of us generally.
    HAVE, fair fallen, O fair, fair have fallen, so dear
    To me, so arch-especiàl a spirit as heaves in Henry Purcell,
    An age is now since passed, since parted; with the reversal
    Of the outward sentence low lays him, listed to a heresy, here.
    Not mood in him nor meaning, proud fire or sacred fear,
    Or love or pity or all that sweet notes not his might nursle:
    I'is the forgèd feature finds me; t'is the rehearsal
    Of own, of abrupt self there (that) so thrusts on, so throngs the ear.
    Let him Oh! with his air of angels then lift me, lay me! only I’ll
    Have an eye to the sakes of him, quaint moonmarks, to his pelted plumage under
    Wings: so some great stormfowl, whenever he has walked his while
    The thunder-purple seabeach plumèd purple-of-thunder,
    If a wuthering of his palmy snow-pinions scatter a colossal smile
    Off him, but meaning motion fans fresh our wits with wonder.

    Fabulous! (But whilst I recognise that Voces8 are the very pinnacle, I wish modern singers wouldn't do that 'push' on each note, as some parts do on some notes here. It's unpleasant unless a deliberate expression or marked dynamic, and spoils the mood of pieces like this.)

      Absolument… mais cela se comprend avec cette musique si expressionniste. Il faut savoir diriger avant tout ses affects individuels de chanteur vers la fusion harmonique et rythmique du groupe. Cette peut musique est fantastique!

    • @SergueiSergueievich
      @SergueiSergueievich Před 4 lety +1

      I can't agree, sorry. Both tracks, music by Voces8, and cinematography are perfect. One cam, one take. A little 'unsteady', float cam will be more accurate, distracts you?
      Just the opposite for me. The striped down concept of only one cam, coming thru the ajar doors straight ahead, hanheld slow and solemn walk, yes slightly floating, and the final standing of three seconds, with the cameraman standing still as the center of an arc, the Voces8 arc, is just perfect. Also convenient for every one of us, poor spectators all over the World, web-looking, who, by this streamlined cinematography, allows every one of us to become the spectator, the only one attendant at the concert. What a princely privilege. Amazing, ineffable, awesome in their crude nakedness of means.
      BTW, I am sure that... Henry Purcell himself would be very very proud of you 8+1.
      Compliments Voces8 and Cinematographer1. A nine-part choir for once.
