Why The Chiefs (suddenly) could NOT pass deep.

- The Chiefs have been forced to change their offense again. Despite the fact that they won the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense was one of the worst deep passing teams in the entire NFL. Based on lack of talent, miscommunication, and Mahomes own struggles, the Chiefs couldn’t connect deep the entire 2023 season. What led to this and how have they fixed it? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 game film to analyze the 2023 Kansas City Chiefs deep passing struggles with Patrick Mahomes.

This was the worst chiefs team we've seen in years and they STILL won the superbowl. We are so fucking cooked
Looked awful for most of last year. Downright atrocious at points. Now they have the most talented roster they've had since 2018. RIP REST OF NFL
Defense was cooking though.
If the D can keep it up then it's going to be unfun for everyone else
They have what it takes to win a Superbowl: the best coach and QB in the league.
@@forkthepork You would think after back to back SB's that would be obvious
@@TheKingWhoWins - 2018 Chiefs had the 31st ranked defense in the league and got sliced up by Brady in the AFC championchip game. 2023 was a better group, they had one of the best playoff runs of all time and the defensive performance was statistically in the same category as the 2000 ravens, 2002, bucs, and legion of boom. 13.7 points per game.
All the clips of the WRs last season dropping the balls thrown to them is giving me PTSD. But hey, we still won it all.
And i literally dont know how we did i just knew we were fried when we lost to the Broncos.
those same receivers came up with plays in the playoffs to win.
I do think the rookie WR coach, Connor Embree deserved a lot of blame for last year's WR woes. You can tell they constantly ran the wrong route and drop balls, leading to Mahomes not being able to trust them even when they are right. We were fortunate that Rice grew to be a passable WR1 in the playoffs. Moreover, I don’t know why but the turnover problems pretty much miraculously disappeared for convenient sake during the playoffs until the SB, but the offense look sloppy and disorganised throughout last year.
This is why as a chiefs fan I think the offense will still be ass this year. That smoothbrain is still the WR coach. Reid and his decision to replace greg lewes with embree is one of the worst hr’s done and nobody talks about it
You can’t teach nfl players how to catch the football 😂
@SycoticForeverNeverAF We still have a great run game, Kelce is still there, and a more consistent WR in Brown and still a good oline. The Chiefs offense will be fine and most likely more improved. Our defense stepping up last year was what we needed while we remake and rework on our WR room.

@@choiyatlam2552 @choiyatlam2552 Who you think are these best WR coaches in the league
I think people are discounting the departure of Sneed. But the offense is better this year and hopefully more organized
You might be underestimating Trent mcduffie. Hes a top 5 cb according to stats. He was better statistically than sneed for a big chunk of the year.
@@boatsanhs9709Bro you can't play defense with 1 corner 😂 but tbh the rest of their secondary is aight
Tbh their secondary outside of the 2 All Pros have given decent showings in limited snaps. But idk how their gonna do with more responsibility
Personally I'm more worried about the D-Line I don't think they have an answer for when Chris Jones starts to slow down
@@boatsanhs9709 - Mcduffie is best when he is playing slot corner. He's not the traditional outside corner like Sneed. I don't think the chiefs will lean as heavily on defense this year so it probably won't matter.
The last 2 years the team had no deep receivers that could track over their shoulder. Look at MVS last big catch, he had to turn around and catch it falling on his butt. 20+ pass plays become much slower on comebacks but much more reliable if you throw is out in front for the rec to run under. Tyreek could track and now Hollywood as well as it seems Worthy can do it, it should be at least some better.
Even that touchdown catch MVS had look liked he almost dropped it 😂 it scared the shit out of me.
MVS could track Rodgers’ throws better, but he was still never that good. I feel like MVS’ all-time completion percentage (with all QBs he’s had) is probably under 50%
metrics still have to be correctly interpreted
deion sanders had kinda 'few' interceptions for how dominant he was. reason? noone threw into his half of the field, because he dominated any star reciever in 1v1 coverage
good quarterbacks can have bad passing stats, because opponent teams stack up the secondary/pass protection ... which frees up space in the running game. as long as a team wins, how do you account a single players influence? did a quarterback do a good job if he passed for 0 yards, but his RBs ran combines 400 yards? its hard to tell sometimes
This is Mahomes and Reid we are talking about. Reid would have died before he would run the football.
Worst receiving core to ever win the Super Bowl in my lifetime. Still hard to believe.

It's always a good day when there's a new Alex Rollins video! Here's to a good NFL season this year!
What I found interesting about this video is that it can be seen as a case study in a "scheme vs. talent" debate. You can draw up the best concepts in the world, but if you don't have the talent to execute them, and your opponent doesn't have to respect you, then you have trouble. Conversely, if you have great talent, but a poor scheme, then talent can only take you so far. It can go to show you just how good, and how talented of a mind, Andy Reid is that he has a long career of coming up with such good concepts!
Thank you brother! 100% scheme vs talent is one of my favorite back and forths. I love that a coach can lean too far into and potentially sabotage the team. Team could be good but you would never know!
what's scary is that the Chief still won the superbowl in this weakened state, and that also speaks about the quality of competition in the league in general, teams need to get smarter and start develop players better
they struggled against any defense that wasn’t awful while they’re defense shutdown the most elite offenses in the NFL

"The Underwear Olympics" is crazy 😂
It doesn't correlate 1:1 to NFL play. Tyreek is still probably the fastest player.
😂
After watching the play at the @9:00 mark, i truly believe Mahomes did that to make the saftey think he locked in on a crosser just to give him space. Either that or hes a 99 on Madden type player and thats all there is to it.
Outside of Travis Patrick could only rely on Watson and Rice. Everyone else was a disappointment on the year in the receiving games
The Chiefs didn’t revise their offense because “Mahomes couldn’t throw the deep ball”. His deep ball stats were statistically anomalous last season, and easily should be pinned on the lack of quality in his WR core. There’s a reason every defense still played two high safety on him on basically every play
Except that didnt. Mahomes saw the least two high looks since 2018 and yet they still couldnt throw deep because his wr’s couldnt seperate, track the ball or run routes correctly
We won in Mahomes WORST year
It’s funny that regardless of all this, they still won it all 😂
Brady had Moss, a fast guy who was able to take those 1-1 easily, Pat had Tyreek, a fast guy who can't be man covered, Xavier seems to be a new fast guy for Mahomes and maybe will turn into he's WR1
Even with the safetys and corners not being scared, they still could hardly cover Trav... my dude blew up in the playoffs, as he does. Up there with Jerry Rice in playoffs
Patrick is different playoff time.
And Thank God the Chiefs didn't get Adonai Mitchell
My exact point ,he seems like the most perfect fit ever(same for the bills as well instead of keon) and they still didn't took him ,they already had speed in Hollywood brown ,they traded up for worthy ontop of it ,so i think ad mitchell really had some glaring flaws which they deemed uncoachable cause man when i see the man run routes, i see an elite guy (he's wayyy faster then ceedee too😭😭 which is his comparision due to the way he run his routes) so man i think ,mitchell really had some glaring flaws

Lack of talent and possibly Nagy failing to implement Reid's gameplans or giving Reid a false idea of what his guys are capable of.
Will worthy help us? We dont need him to be wr1 we just need like a 800-900 yd season i feel like.
Its nothing new Mahomes sat behind and learned from Alex Smith the biggest take away he got from Smith was "Take what they give you"
Andy Reid is why they are so successful. With subpar talent he had to scheme the team open. Look at how Travis Kelce would be standing in open field completely open. The defense didnt leave him open for shits and giggles... the scheme confused the shit out of them and would leave their #1 open wide ass open. Thats from an insane offensive genius.
Mahomes has been in the league 7 years and already has a dynasty. I'm not a KC fan but its cool to watch even if a bit painful 😅
Looked like there was a few plays where he forced the ball deep and he had guys wide open over the middle.
Needed to give deep balls a chance. Didn't trust some of the midfield guys. Regular season for Chiefs is training grounds lol.

This channel is the football Bible along with PFF… you correctly predicted the chiefs would win last year, so I’m inclined to believe you again
Thanks brother! Ya win some you lose some
Save two players ( Kelce and Hill ), Mahomes receiving corps has been a list of players that couldn't cut it elsewhere. After KC Watkins was on three teams in two years before retiring, Hardman got cut by the Jets, Smith-Schuster was cut this week by the Patriots, and rumors are that MVS is going to get cut by the Bills before the season. Hill is the only former receiver that was good after he left. Rice looks promising, but needs a baby sitter to stay on the roster long term. That leaves Kelce, and some solid 3rd & 4th string receivers, but the WR1 and WR2 has mostly been a disaster, and yet we manage to win games with Kelce and Mahomes plus a decent to great defense.
They dropped everything

@@JahNuhThunDeeTheOneAndOnly I think the ravens can. I think Henry was the missing piece.
yeah this most recent loss REALLY hurt me to see too
What hurts about the 49ers losing against the Chiefs for the second time is knowing the 49ers had the better team. But injuries coming into the game and injuries during the Super Bowl hurt the way the team played. Add in the Chief's punt hitting the foot of a 49er and the failure of recovering it and you have the ONLY touchdown the Chiefs scored during all of regulation. Patrick Mahomes was a 49ers punt fumble away from being shutout of the Super Bowl without scoring any touchdowns. But no one focuses on the reality of the game. Instead they focus on the 100+ yards Mahomes added at the end of the game once the 49ers defense was exhausted and struggling. Before the 49ers defense getting gassed the Chiefs did not and could not score a touchdown. Think about that. Really THINK about it. This is "why" the loss hurts. It isn't simply the loss itself. It how the 49ers lost and knowing that they should have won.
@BeingButterfly I mean I get your point but that's part of what makes a great QB great. If you mess around and don't blow the doors off of them early on then you are inviting them in the door to taking advantage of an exhausted pass rush that is tired from giving all that extra effort to get after them through the first 3 quarters. Brady and NE did the same thing to teams that had better rosters for years. With a team that much better top to bottom it never should have came down to a scooped punt return fumble. The niners should've played mistake free through the first half and they would've been up 21-3 with no chance of any Mahomes magic.

For the past two seasons I’ve been saying that Andy Reid has been a better coach than Mahomes has been a QB. Keep in mind all of these problems Alex mentions, but both years the Chiefs have been 300 yards ahead of the second best team in yards after the catch. That’s scheme, and scheme working despite the sub par play. It also helps that the defense has been way better than they’ve ever been given credit for (they’re starting to get noticed more recently, but they’ve only been below average once in Mahomes career, and they’ve been top 10 in 4 of his 6 seasons) and when the refs refuse to call some of the most blatant holds I’ve ever seen in my life in the Super Bowl.
