    In Jan 2014, PHIL COLLINS was interviewed at length by Director JOHN EDGINTON. In this extract, Phil talks about his transition in 1976 from GENESIS drummer to singer after PETER GABRIEL left the band. They recruited BILL BRUFORD as the new main drummer but Phil retained a drumming role too.

      Phil Collins. PC. Has an accomplished canon with his solo work.
      And with Genesis, he has taken the band to new heights. Love to have a sit down dinner at a high end restaurant.

    In all due respect, I disagree with Phil. He says the arrangement of the familiar melody is why he sounds like Peter, but even the tunes without Peter sounded like Peter. He had the perfect uncanny similar voice to his predecessor. If there was a Genesis cover band they would have used Phil, haha. What more that they found Peter's replacement within the band itself.

      Even Steve said when they sang together he couldn't tell them apart. As Tony says, at first his voice was more 'pure' like James Taylor and didn't have that 'crunch' that Mike mentions until later. Fish from Marillion also sounded very similar, but it may partly be engineering or something. Marillion he sounded quite distinctive but his first solo album I remember thinking "this sounds just like Peter Gabriel...no wait, Phil Collins".
      But Bill Bruford said that Phil was a great mimic, so I wonder how much of that may have been intentional.

    Always l liked his drumming and singing, however he committed a crime against humanity when he butchered “You Can’t Hurry Love”……

      I hated his Motown Schmaltz.

    • @jkorshak
      @jkorshak Před 2 lety +2

      I liked his motown material on the level of homage - because it was clear Phil LOVES motown - and there's a lot about it to love. I liked that he probably introduced a lot of kids TO motown - and good for him for that. For myself, I prefer the originals but respect his willingness to dive in there and see what he could do with it. It's a similar take with his cover of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." Great and innovative song and very different from anything else before, really - but cool and unworldly. It's a song that just soars. I'm glad Phil covered it because it was an homage in my eyes to one of the more amazing songs the Beatles ever recorded and to Phil's credit, he did an excellent cover of it - not a copy but a very legitimate job of making it his own while not forgetting to include a lot of nuance from the original recording.
