The right way is to use a piece of copper at least 18", sweat the pipe thread adapter on one end, and your pex adapter on the other. Then you thread it into the heater, and attach the pex. Both on cold inlet AND hot outlet. You should also have a shut off valve, codes require them on the cold inlet, having one also on the outlet is often convenient. They can either be in the copper or in the pex.

QUESTION PLEASE: I just bought a new Rheem Short Tank Gas Water Heater (30 gallon, 30,000 BTU) and it has no legs like the the one we're replacing. Do non-leg water heaters need to be elavated slightly off the floor or can they directly go on a concrete floor? Thanks and well done video.... Thanks. Phil
I've used pex exclusively on water heaters for over 4 years now. Plastic fittings, pex pipe and pex related shutoff valves. I've had zero issues. This type of video is designed to generate hysteria and panic. NOBODY sets their water heater at the extremes you are talking about. And even if they did..........pex could handle it. Relax.
