  • Alison Rendall has created this short film about the production of Shetland 'oo' and the work that goes in behind the scenes from lambing to a finished "ba o' oo" (ball of wool).

I appreciate these beautifully produced Shetland Amenity Trust videos so much ! When I knit with a "ball o' Shetland oo", I feel a sense of awe and connection to the [ancient] history of the land, the sheep and the people whose hands, hearts, and hard work go into making this fine yarn...Thank you ❣

Lovely, thank you. I can’t get to Shetland this year, so I’m enjoying what I can from home. Spinning is so hard to get right! I’m sure shearing is too, but you did a great job!

I'm glad you are able to join in virtually, I think that sheep was glad when I went home! haha

People have so many options, endless choices in this beautiful universe. If only they chose the right! I've never been there, but a part of my heart is in Shetland ❤

many thanks but I think the sheep would have preferred someone faster! :)

@@AlisonRendall: Maybe, but back in the days of hand clippers, the women of the Barossa Valley in South Australia who were of Prussian descent, were noted for their very fine, albeit slow shearing. Unlike the shearers who came from Anglo-Saxon (and perhaps Celtic) traditions, the Barossa women didn't cut the sheep, and I suspect they didn't have a lot of double passes (that result in wool that can't be spun). So I wouldn't be too worried about your speed if I were you.

@@AlisonRendall: I've recently refurbished my late mother's wheel and started doing some spinning. And, no, I don't have enough time to spin, but I'm doing so anyway.
