Tiya Dely's Theme - La Bella Filipina (Florante Aguilar)

  • A tribute to the heyday of Philippine radio when they used to play traditional Filipino music. Tiya Dely (Fidela Magpayo), a pioneering radio broadcaster, championed kundiman and harana music in her shows, even amidst the domination of American music in the Philippine airwaves. I can only wish for such a radio personality today!
Tiya Dely is considered the First Lady of Philippine Radio, with her career spanning nearly seven decades.
The music was written by Ignacio Massaguer, a Spaniard who emigrated to Manila in the late 1800s where he set up a music shop. He was also an active musician and teacher.
The arrangement you hear during the Tiya Dely show is by Juan Silos. It's quite beautiful, the strings lush with a splash of guitar. I believe Silos also arranged another version with orchestra, this time with the rondalla. You can hear both versions in her show.
Here is my take for the solo classical guitar. Hope you enjoy!

The Pilipino music has always cast a spell on me, since I first heard it on the tv programm "Trescientos Millones" (of Spanish speakers). By that time there were still 10 million people speaking of understanding Spanish in the Philippines. Now also those times are gone, but still there are those who feel the close connection between your country and mine. After many years longing to be able to play some Kundiman music, we completed a whole programm of Pilipino music that we first played in April with great success, since it touched the heart of the people. Next week, curiously, we are going to play this piece for the first time. God bless the Philippines and its good hearted people and splendid music! Greetings from Spain, where there ought to be more of you.

I learned to appreciate Filipino music from her. She also importuned the Ministry of Culture to officially recognize Levi Celerio as a National Artist. It took them close to ten years to finally grant him the award. Your rendition of this tune is a sincere homage to her, the music she championed and a sure sign that the torch she carried for so long has been passed onto able hands.

Thank you for that bit of info on Levi Celerio, who coincidentally wrote the Tagalog lyrics for this song and recorded by Mabuhay Singers in 1968 - czcams.com/video/zeOND8B9Vtw/video.html

@@FloranteAguilarGuitar In the middle phase of its long run, Tia Dely's program was supplemented by another hourlong broadcast, immediately following it, also hosted by her, whose title escapes me now but it could very well be the same as its theme soundtrack, Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig as interpreted by Pedro Concepcíon.

The days of the radio may have gone for good but the memories remained thanks to Florante Aguilar who relives the times when entertainment was just a transistor radio. Now, we have all the means thru the internet to remember and cherish how it was when life was simple and yet so happy.

In Economics, money is said to be a store of value (this quality is eroded in times of galloping inflation). Well, a song to me is a store of language. Listening to old songs is listening to how Tagalog was spoken when the lyrics were written. The words of Nicanor Abelardo's Pahiwatig, for example, was how they spoke Tagalog in San Miguel, Bulacan a hundred years ago.

This music has reminded me the wonderful era of yesterday where hearing this song in mid afternoon is so soothing to the ears, that musuc carries the happy memories of a simply life without the gadget of modern days but everything is absolutely wonderful the sight and sound is beyond compare. 70 until the end of 90 is a time to remember so much fun.
