I used to throw that sidearm. Love that pitch. Only wish CZcams was around back then 😂.
not many people will understand this but grip it on the inside seam with your middle finger like your throwing a two seam kinda it will open the possibility of using seam shift wake which causes it to be more of a sweeper instead of a normal slider

You throw it with seam shifted wake it will become a 2 seam. It’s just spinning on a constant axis where the front seam remains still causing there to be turbulence.
@@colinbrown6023 the top will have a swan and the bottom will be smooth since it’s already using the magnus effect it’s going to make it go that much further that’s what makes it different then a slider
@@hughjass564 nearly every pitch will have both magnus force and seam shifted wake. Magnus force (when in action) is the primary movement factor. The best way to throw a sweeper is to get the ball tilted upwards. Essentially, the normal slider has bullet spin and is usually tilted to the upwards left or right. However, once this dot can be on the top of the ball more, the magnus force making the ball move laterally will be more greatly influenced.
@@hughjass564you are correct when you say seam shifted wake in addition to magnus can cause even more movement. I just thought when you said hold it like a 2 seam you were referring to a 2 seam
Exactly how I taught my son to throw it except I have him aim towards the back of my head at release. I think the part that’s missing or at least different is that I have him pronate through the throw so that his pointer finger is involved as well. Almost like you get the strong middle finger pressure across the seam but as you go to release the last outside of the ball your pointer finger catches the ball. It’s absolutely filthy.

After disc golfing for several years and developing a strong forehand drive. I went back to pitching in a men's league and just naturally had this pitch all of a sudden. I hold it with only my thumb and index and snap my wrist like throwing a disc. It works against old men.
What about for overhand pitchers? They throw gyro slider right? Can you show it how to throw it?

This is definitely more of a slurve variation, true sweepers are thrown along the 2 seamer grip or hooking the horseshoe (look at Chris Sale or Adam Ottovino’s grip)

it’s a slider that has more sideways movement. A lot of pitchers today are using it. I’m pretty sure shohei ohtanis slider is considered a sweeper

For me if his has good mechanics and is strong enough to handle the pitch then yes if he's a 50-50 on his fastball right now his changeup I would pass on the pitch at the moment.
Pronate through the sweeper and you’ll be completely fine. My son will be 16 in September and has never had an issues with his arm. He’s thrown this since age 12. Well we’ve worked it since age 12. But be careful that once he learns to pronate that he doesn’t do it on his fastball.
